the way you’ve improved is insane. I follow u since day one,u keep getting better!!
The official story that Kool Herc "created Hip Hop" at that party in the Bronx is a glamorization. DJs in all 5 burroughs were doing similar things. Graffiti writers were coming up all over. Breakers from Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Harlem and Staten Island were all grooving to the same beats and popping and locking. MCs all over NY were all toasting and rapping in a similar fashion. It’s just so easy to pinpoint to that Get down on Sedgwick because it’s documented, there are flyers out there and all. But Hip Hop began as an organic, grassroots movements as an natural response to the reality of the times. It was not limited to a single borough.
Proof?
Living proof.
i mean. hip hop existed for a long time. "to rap" just meant to speak. and a lot of singers including james brown "rapped" its just saying words over a bear. eventually sure someone decided to spit some lyrics over ONLY drums and it flourished from there

I like how you’re teaching us now, you should make a music history class lol
For sure
I'll definitely make more videos like these if you guys dig them!

The Winston's "Amen, Brother" was basically an improvisational take on Curtis Mayfeield and The Impressions "Amen." (1964) They, in turn, took the song from a film, "Lillies of the Field" (1963) where it was arranged by Jester Hairston. Hairston, probably knew the song as a traditional spiritual or gospel song, though it had been recorded by other groups over the years, as early as the 1943.
Sidney Poitier won a Best Actor Oscar for that movie. "Lilies of the Field" was massively popular in West Germany where the film won many awards.
Can we just appreciate the amount of effort that went into the editing of this video?
Man your editing holds the video together and prevent everyone from getting bored
Keep up the good work big man❤❤🔥
agreed!
I don’t think his vids would be boring without the editing. I would literally watch an uncut version of every cookup video he has ever made… Really inspires me! But I think it’s preference tbh…
@@iamsnowman9099 man I was specifically talking about this particular type of video which contains history and a lot of theory based knowledge which sometime feels like lecture that was the thing I actually appreciated that he was so creative with his editing. I think now you get my POV

@@memeboi5271 yessiirrr, thank you for clearing that up!
To all the technically-adept musicians out there watching this video who spend their professional lives sweating the details of their music to make it all perfect, I just want to thank you for all the blood, sweat, and tears you have all put in to your craft.
Over the years music has saved me from myself and jacketed me against an insane society I simply cannot fathom. I've lost myself in music when I was crumpled on the ground and I have moved to it while rejoicing. It has kept me company when I was lonely and given me something different to think about when I was filled with angst.
Ironically, I grew up in recording studios back in the late 60's and early 70's in Chicago where my father put his commercial advertising music to tape. I had never seen so many microphones, foam shapes, and various widths of tape going from cassette up to 64-track tape that was about two inches wide. And the mixing board(s) spanned the entire width of the room, with one little guy chain-smoking and tickling those dozens and dozens of sliders and knobs like a puppet master. The recording studio was the most interesting thing I'd ever seen up to that point.
And then the first time I heard them edit the raw recordings to double the strings section and then double it again it was like magically creating an entire orchestra. Seriously, you guys are wizards in the truest sense of the word.
So please don't stop. There's magic in you begging to get out to the rest of us, and we really do need what you've got. Don't let the naysayers in your lives slow or trip you; cast them aside and believe in yourselves. Once you get to be 61 years old like me, I hope you can look back with a smile at your sense of accomplishment in exposing the world, making it more apt, and encouraging everyone to be stronger.
My most sincere thanks to you all.
glad you’re here to tell the tale 🤝
cool blog post nerd
Hey brother, had to chime in. I needed to read rhat. Music is life. I have played drums all my life. I come from a well estabished music scene. Tight. And expands all genres. 25 year friends. Tons of them A few tradgedies later I am starting my life over in downton Toronto. After rehab lol. Just started playing again.Everything going great. April 8th I witnessed a man executed in the street. Random. Google Sherbourne station shooting. Crushed me. Last Tuesday a friend took me to see a Leafs game to cheer me up. I got beat for 2 subway stops and stabbed in the head at least 3 times. Same stop as the shooting. My apt is across the street.Which I am about to lose. The one thing that is keeping me sane is any chance I can go lay a beat for someone right now. No clue why I am typing this. Drunk and brain damaged. But yeah....life sucks. Bring those beats back
Man from a guy who has spent 45 years of my life in this industry. I just want to sincerely say
Thank You !!!
We do it ALL FOR YOU , and those like you ... I’ve never gotten rich , and will never be famous. And that’s ok , because music is the voice of GOD , we just translate it to emotions , and share it with everyone we can . At that point it’s up to them to receive it.
When I look back I’m glad I chose this profession. It’s been hard , grueling , never ending work literally loosing blood , sweat , and tears on a daily bases. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy every single minute of it. And I’m SO blessed that GOD gave me this talent/curse .
And I just can’t imagine any other kind of life. The places , the people , the cities , most of all the shared love of music worldwide ..
Again THANK YOU !!!! Because it’s really “all about you “ ....
🤠🎸🎶🙏✌️
@@theofficialdiamondlou2418 I feel what I said very deeply for you and other dedicated musicians.
I don't know why, but I love all genres of music both old and newly-created -- as long as I can feel the effort that went into it.
I have been so very fortunate in my life to be present when great music has been played, both live, on recordings, and during the creation and post-production process in recording studios as a child fifty years ago.
Go ahead and build your rocket to Mars, Mr. Musk-- I'll stick with these four guys who've been playing together for 17 years and sound like a single magnificent entity singing through the pain because they've been through twelve yards of hell and back over the years, but the music was the air, the blood, and the glue, and here they are still.
I hope we meet some day. Let me know if you're ever in Atlanta. I'm easy to find.
What's funny is that no one knows in which direction the next sample that's to change the world is going to come from

Ed Talenti just levelled up again with this video. Im already aware of the history of the Amen through DnB but the standard of this video is exceptional. I would thumbs up more if I could 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks man!
I wish I had Ed Talenti as my Music Teacher back in school
"nothing is truely new". this was my biggest lesson as i started becoming an artist (im a bass player working on making my own songs now)
I have said this for years! lol Non musicians do not understand what I mean when I say this. I say there are only so many riffs and beats. You could coincidentally do a song that sounds almost identical in structure, beat and riffs to a song by a famous band yet you have never heard that song then get sued...lol
@@Defensive_Wounds just like the fact that probably there is someone on this planet who looks very much like ourselves lol. twins from other mothers
As a jungle producer I knew it was the amen break as soon as I saw the title!
Would love to see u make some jungle man!!
I mean, dude. These videos are on the level of production that Vox puts out. Great work! Keep going, man, your videos will really start to take off!
Vox is not high production...
@@12DAMDO I think you're watching a different Vox channel then, my man.
I discovered your channel maybe a week ago and I can't stop watching your videos! Always informative and interesting! Thank you for this video as well, I enjoyed watching it and I learned a lot!
Welcome to the family brotha!
The production quality of this video is on another level.
Make more videos like this, with different styles, this is goood!
Is this a RUclips video or a Netflix special? This production quality is INSANE! You're the man, Ed!
I agree. Way beyond anything almost everything I've seen. And just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It's way too much. Had to stop after 5 min, then I wanted to see if it was mentioned. Overproduced, imo. All the cut zooms while he is speaking to the camera... I had to stop. either way, the dude has some serious skills.
I love watching stuff like this. The history and seeing someone creative process. Sweet grooves!
i love that type of videos! hope to see more of that :)
Definitely!
Wow the prodcution quality here is MAD! Thanks for the great video Ed!
The production quality is amazing on this one! Give this man a Netflix special!!!
Got here from watching Egyptian Lover work on a beat on his MPC, as a lifelong music lover and semi-recent DJ, there are never too many tools in the box. Definitely gonna watch more videos here!
I've been watching you for years man, this video really shows the progress in quality you've made over the years. The editing, research, history in this vid alone is sublimed must have taken a lot of work tempt together. Great content Ed and keep these vids coming! Great beat also!
This really means a lot 🙏
8:38 that cook up 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯
Back when I used to mess around on the turntables my most favorite thing to do was cut back and forth scratching break beats like that “Mary-go-round” technique. If you’ve never spent time on some Technics-1200’s and enjoy hip hop and breakbeats then you’ve gotta try it. Thanks for breaking it down for us man.
the editing is just gorgeous! bravo ed sono fierissimo di te!
Bongo Rock I learned from Liam Howlett from the Prodigy!
His solo CD "the Dirtchamber sessions vol.1" sooooo many LPs he spins on there. Got me obsessed with spinning!
Never got a soft needle so I broke a few regular ones and scratched a few LPs (KISS and Styx)

Man I haven't watched 1 of your videos in a little while and OMG the production value is unreal. Great job.
Loving this informative videos! the editing is amazing as well
Sampling actually may be used in the 1200-1700 in France, by the travellings artists named troubadours (idk how to name this in english ngl). Troubadours copied melodys of others songs, then sign their own verses on them.
You put a lot of effort into your videos and you explain really well too. You deserve more man .
Brooo i have been listening to this sample in so many songs...
Thanks a lot for sharing this....
Know I will always remember your information after listening any such songs

Oh shii didn’t expect you here 😲🤝
Hey ed, you've been such an influence to me past couple years I just quoted you in one of my homework articles in college lol. I love you keep up the good work.
I like the hip hop history. I saw you give a little in the phonk video as well. You should turn it into a series
My favorite part was when I was literally just getting ready to ctrl+t and youtube the PPG intro and then you proceeded to play the track sped up and SHOW the PPG intro.
If you sample and no one noticed you win! You are a great producer.
bro you should make more videos like this, teaching us history of hip hop and things like that.
Thanks for the free downloads from tracklib help get inspired
Extra fun fact: The "Amen" Break places a hug role in the Techno Scene as well 🤸
@@stewedfaster439 Also true but it was Techno I encountert it first
@@stewedfaster439 So I also realized its mostly in Techno related genres where you can create the sickest and harshest drops with an Amen Break
Awesome break-down (no pun) of how this would became included in everything including the PowerPuff theme tune. Superb!
You should do waaaaaay more videos like this one!! Just awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Nice to finally see a video make a connection between musique concrète and hip-hop! But at 5:04 is Marley Marl, not Breakbeat Lou! Peace.
Ed, more videos in this kind of format please
At 5:06 that image looks like Cold Chillin’ Records and Juice Crew founder DJ Marley Marl, not Lou Flores. Marley Marl did a lot of beat re-creation vids for NI Maschine’s RUclips channel. His drum break of choice was the Honey Drippers “Impeach the President”. He was an early user of if not inventor of sample chopping, another innovation in what makes Hip-Hop music so groundbreaking. I’d love to see a video on the origins of sample chopping.
Its really dope u took the time to research and teach how important these roots are. Most of these Greats couldn't afford instruments or studios yet they created legendary music on whatever they got there hands on. Let that continue to be a lesson for us today !
James Brown couldn’t afford a drum set at first, but he never sampled any one else’s shit.
Best description of art and why it needs to be shared I've ever heard. Good on ya.
Dope stuff definitely sharing this. Blessings brother.
Ayy I remember this topic on "video explains the world's most important 6-sec drum loop" posted on RUclips 16 years ago lol
A fascinating subject
Finally! I know what the quintessential D&B break is called, and where it came from!

When you just started watching "Hip Hop Evolution" on Netflix and this video pop out. Amazing job man
Oh hey, August 11 is my birthday! Thats dope to see that something so influential was pioneered 20 years before the day i showed up lol

this is like a NY times or genius's documentary, tracklib have one of the best editors, and edtalenti is awesome as always, great video:)
This is one of your best videos, man. A wonderful watch!
What changed hip hop was when the sp 1200 came out in 87 and you could sample for about 2 seconds. On about every 90’s hip hop album there is a sp 1200 being used for drums and sampling. What changed 80’s hip hop was the good old Roland 808 which everyone knows for the 808 kick drum
Your definition of art was fire 👌🏻
Amazing Editing in this video!
Since I was a kid I noticed that drum pattern in Powerpuff Girls! Great to be able to put a name on it
Wow this was by far your best video in my opinion 😳🤯
I love this music history to cook up format! Can you do one with impeach the president? Another classic and iconic drum break
Excellent video, been into hiphop and d&b for years and only now do I know the history of the amen break, fantastic stuff!
