Excellent Video Dominic! Tati is one of my favorite directors as well so my ranking would go like this: (i include Parade to the list since it just feels so film like yet being very odd) 6. Trafic 5. Jour de Fête 4. Monsieur Hulot's holiday 3. Parade 2. Playtime 1. Mon Oncle Kinda similiar lists but what can you really do with 5-6 films :D But all that being done i just want to say how much i like the evolving themes in Tati's work. Jour de Fête starts it off with Americanization and the way people in France would want their own country and its style and beautiness to go for the American culture to Rise and while the film is fun, the bigger case is for the postman and the way how people treat him. Monsieur Hulot's holiday takes a more laid back approach to the Tativille's themes, yet that has some great social commentary as well, but with Mon Oncle, the mayhem begins, building's are being torn down, the modernism is starting with the very ridicilous looking rich neighbourhoods and soon all the uniqueness that is old houses, are gone. But Tati still manages to make it fun and it really is one of my favorite films of all time. Playtime then takes the approach of the modernism's faults kicking in, like in the club scene, where the futuristic decorations and stairs go against the very people that all for it and i really love that. It is cold, gray, everything that was before (metaphorically in Mon Oncle) is gone and it is just America 2.0. Trafic is the last to me in that story and that really is a culmination in many ways, the world is back at, modern but it feels so different, it is a mayhem as cars and some of the Shots really bring that idea. Playtime was quite controlled chaos, but in trafic, this car mayhem is different. I just really love this idea and i still remember when i started watching Tati's work, he is still in my favorite directors of all time.
yes!! I definitely really love the development of his consistent themes throughout his career. It really shows how consistent he was with his standards, and all of this amazing criticism and satire ON TOP OF the fact that most of if not all of these are some of the most fun and entertaining movies out there. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
I’ve only seen one (and hope to see more) but I love the touches you put into this video. Sliding in the criterions, the short in the beginning, and your speech has much improved. I’d be down to see another one with you.
I don't know why I have a Problem with Tati... Just watched Mr. Hulot's Holidays and Mon Uncle (First 30 Minutes)... I liked it, but it doesn't touch me that much... I think, I will watch it a second time when it's available and hope for the right Mood... Maybe it's the same like Tarkowski... I stopped Nostalghia for example... and the next Time I watched it... I loved it...
Jacques Tati's dance towards the end of School for Postmen is one my favorite sequences in all of cinema.
