    I finally got around to setting up my FTDX-3000 with the SDRPlay RSP1A and it works very, very well. The large detailed waterfall makes seeing activity on the band so much easier and control via OmnRig works flawlessly. Highly recommended for anyone with an FTDX-3000 or any older transceiver with an RF out port (something to look out for when buying a transceiver). Thanks for the installation instructions, the process was even easier for me as OmniRig was already installed. Y

      If transmitting on the same frequency as the RSPuno is tuned to would it not overload the RSPuno receiver and damage it? Just curious I have the same and would like to set it up

      @@kenm0bqh163 The RSP1A receives its input from the RF out port which is disconnected on transmit however it still does pick up the signal presumably via the coax connecting the RSP1A to the FTDX-3000. The display on the pan adapter does show an overload but I haven't noticed any damage. Y

    To me, unless you use the IF output of the Rx, you don't have a panadapter display of your rig. You have two receivers with a 'common tuning knob' and some 'common controls'. I don't want to see everything my antenna picks up on my panadapter; I want to see what the radio is hearing. To me, when you use the Rx port instead of the IF port, it's kinda like using a mini cooper to control a Lambourghini. Very nice video... thank you :)

    • @TechMindsOfficial
      @TechMindsOfficial  3 года назад +3

      You’re welcome :-) I think having the choice of IF or RX is a nice touch with the 3000. Personally I liked using the RX for wide receive incase I missed a signal off band, but I see your point and can see why some would only want to see what the rig sees. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching 🙏

    Nice, but you didn't mention which you are using to listen on now. RSP or Radio - I assume radio but maybe the RSP is better at filtering some things? I can see this being of most use for say a FT-857d (which I have) as it has a very small display with no pan adapter at all. I plan to fit a PAN Adapter tap to it anyway as it doesn't have one as standard. I think the SDRUno software might be better at DSP and filter tighter than the radio as well. What do you think?

    hi wondering if once the DX3000 is connected to your PC via USB does the built in CW function of the radio no longer function ? that is what is happening after interfacing with PC via USB with omni rig and SDRuno. Also the SDruno tracks my VFO when dialling from the DX3000 and if i change bands on the software (PC) then the radio follows, but if i change bands on the actual radio then the SDRuno does not follow the radio. is this all normal operation do you know ?

    Hi Matt! You make my wheels turn inside my head. I still haven't picked up a HF rig yet. This looks like the ticket for me except I would like to pay a lot less for the HF rig. I am guessing the RSPdx will run about $300 or more looking at their other units. I looked on the Omni Rig website and it looks as if the ORig will run with a few of the less expensive HF radios out there. I think you had a device from MFJ that you used with your FT991 that would switch between your HF unit and your RSP device but that looks like the FTDX-3000 has something already built in that takes your receive signal and sends it to the RSP device. How cheap could I get into HF by pairing an inexpensive HF rig that works with ORig and a RSP device. It looks like the RSPdx will pick up more traffic than the other units. Am I on the right track or do I have flawed theory here? I don't have anything but the computer at this point.
    Thanks , Be blunt, I can take it.

      @TechMindsOfficial  4 года назад +2

      Hello mate, how’s things? Well, yes, the 3000 has an IF out but also has an RX out, which is basically everything the antenna sees. Similar to the MFJ box of tricks I showed in a video. In order to link an SDR to a radio you’d need to be able to get to the IF, at the very least. SDR-Kits sell panadapter boards for a whole range of radios that don’t have that feature, might be worth checking that out. Alternately, choose any HF radio you like and then hook up an MFJ SDR box, as long as Omnirig supports it you’ll be good to go!

  • @1crazynordlander

    You are one of my two favorite Ham YT channels. The other being a stateside Channel called SevenFortyOne. Why? You both will answer my questions. I am looking for a HF rig to start off with but I would actually like to start off with a good SDR radio and antenna to do HF. This SDRPlay RSPdx looks like the answer. I would like to put up the antenna that I will eventually use with the HF rig I settle on. I like your previous video you did on the MFJ-1708SDR for your FT-991 HF rig. Do you have any recommendations on a HF antenna I can get a start on that also can be used for the HF rig? I live in the country on my own land but not sure how well large antennas will suite my spouse. I need something somewhat stealth but in the $100-$200 price range.
    Thanks
    Kevin

    • @TechMindsOfficial
      @TechMindsOfficial  4 года назад +1

      Hey Kevin, I use an End Fed Half Wave antenna which is quite stealthy and will probably only cost you $50 or less. It’s just a 49:1 transformer at the base, and then 20 m or wire. Resonant on 40m up to 10m not tuner required. Or if you have 40m of wire it’s resonant from 80m to 10m. Maybe I’ll do a video on this antenna. I think you can see the antenna in my WSPR videos :)

    my old FT1000 unfortunately only has the IF OUT, can you show what it looks like when you are using the IF OUT ? It also seems using the IF route, the software needs a lot more configuration... I wish I had that RX OUT port, that would be a way more simple...

    • @TechMindsOfficial
      @TechMindsOfficial  4 года назад

      I don’t have the 3000 any longer but from what I recall the IF output would provide a narrower bandwidth. You’d have to check the radio specs for that. Configuration isn’t too difficult, as long as you know the IF output frequency you can just enter that into SDRuno in the IF section.

    I recently purchased the RSPdx and am quite pleased with it's performance. However I am a bit disappointed because I bought it for two reasons. I had also hoped to use it with the Spectrum analyzer software downloadable from the same website. At present (May 9, 2020) the spectrum analyzer software still does not support the RSPdx. You'll find the statement below in the section on the spectrum analyzer software section. It looks like it's taking a lot longer than a few weeks. This was long before the Covid-19 situation arose, so I tend not to accept that being the cause or an acceptable situation to blame for the delay. I suppose it's possible that it's not being worked on at all, or that something about the RSPdx design makes it's inclusion much harder than anticipated.
    December 4th 2019 update: Work is underway on adding the new RSPdx - this will take a few weeks - check back here for a status update.
