  • SDRplay, a maker of "black box" SDR radios, has just introduced its mid-range RSPdx to replace its RSP2 and RSP2Pro receivers. Here I take a look at all three radios in their current lineup, the RSP1A, the RSPdx, and the RSPduo, with emphasis on the RSPdx and its new low-band capabilities.

I just ordered the RSPdx. Can't wait. My HF radios (I have 3) are all from the late 80s and early 90s. Two IC-707s and a Heath SB1400. Obviously neither have band scopes or waterfalls but so far seem to work ok. I have only made contacts on one radio. My background many years ago was satellite communications so spectrum analyzers was the norm for me. So I wanted to find a reasonable way to do something similar. So I ordered a RTL-SDR dongle..it works but not as well as I hoped. I saw this and figured I'd give it a shot...plus the software looks great. Thanks for all your videos I have learned a lot from you.

Thanks, Dave. I've been an RSP1A user for a couple of years and am pleased with it, except for it's susceptibility to overload from some fairly close MW stations. I am about to take the plunge on the RSPdx for the reasons you mentioned. I'd like to add that the new version (1.33) of SDR Uno is much improved over the previous version. I've moved from SDR Console to SDR Uno and am very pleased with the new scanning ability incorporated into 1.33. SDR Uno takes some time to adapt to, but now that I'm proficient with it, I prefer it over SDRC. I'd also like to add that I have done comparisons of the RSP1A to my Drake R8, and although it's not quite in Drake territory yet in terms of sensitivity, it isn't all that far off. Thank you for providing us this review. I guess it's time to send another order to HRO.

    Awesome video!
I use my RSP2Pro along with an Icom IC-718 and an MFJ branded auto switch and have them connected with OmniRig for use on HF with an end fed half wave 40/20/15/10 along with an attic mounted MFJ loop.
I love this setup and from my perspective the receivers seem equally matched.
I bought mine after researching SDRs to find the best one for HF, and it is responsible for my getting off my butt and getting my General Class license and I'm studying for Extra currently.
    EDIT
I have the B antenna connected to a discone in my attic for VHF and ADSB

    Yet another great review -
I agree, an outboard SDR is the best thing you can do for your superhet radio. I started, like so many others, with the 8 bit 'dongles' (still fire one up here and there for higher freq browsing) but the higher bit units are far better. I used an Airspy for a few months but it burned itself up quickly. I then went to the (then) new RSP1a - Oh wow What an improvement over the 8 bit dongles an 12 bit Airspy. I also went from using a MFJ Tx/Rx switch controlled by the PTT line of the radio to installing a buffer/amplifier off of the 1st IF. The advantage is using the radios Tx/Rx switch and internal front end filtering. Sure, like on your FTdx3k signal out, you are limited to the band the radio is on, but that is fine as it is used as the pan display.
On the SDR Uno software; yes, it is great except for one thing - the stuff is too small, it causes me eyestrain to try to read it. Plus, there is too much real estate used for option buttons, but nice you do not need to have them all up at the same time. For higher bands searching I like the SDR# program best, and for my pan display I prefer SDR Console V3 because it has the largest and sharpest pan display along with excellent support and amazing options. I find that often the SDR audio is superior to my radios, which happens to be a Yaesu FT450D. The third option for DNR is amazing, often cutting all the noise without any audio distortion - almost like my West Mountain Radio CLRdsp noise reduction unit I have in the FX loop of my Behringer. That unit is amazing when used with my old Heathkit HW101, and when used with a little bit of Yaesu DNR and a little bit of CLRdsp, you get quiet background without any audio distortion.
Using Virtual audio cables and CAT software, yes - you Can "Point and Shoot" to whatever signal interests you with complete linking to your main rig. It also links many logging programs (like HRD, etc) so they all work as one cohesive unit. I use the DX Labs suite so the pan display, radio control, radio itself, logging, etc all have the same info. Another thing you can do with your setup is use the SDR to feed the signal info and spotter call data in N1MM pan window. Perhaps a bit finicky to setup, but incredible to use, and just click a spot and your radio etc goes immediately to it.
There is so much more, but this is plenty for now - really enjoyed your intro to the RSP line-
    73 - (an Oggie)

I've had radios for 50 years. I've had Allied, Radio Shack, Drake, Collins, Heathkit and more - yet the RSPdx is the best (and smallest) radio I have ever had! Sure the Drakes and Collins had better spur free and large signal performance, but for sheer ability to find and listen to signals, the RSPdx winds by 1000%. :-)

I bought the SDR Play RSPdx for use with my IC-7300 that I have had for about three weeks now. I also bought the Radio Analog PTRX7300 interface module from Martin Lynch and Sons in the UK. I use OmniRig software free to download to sync the VFO on the radio with the SDRuno software. It was all so simple to setup. I like it very well even though I am very inexperienced with Amateur Radio in general. I have a short video of it running in tandem with the IC-7300 on my RUclips channel. It is called "IC-7300, SDRPlay, OmniRig, RSPdx With SDRuno Monitoring 80 Meter Ham Band" only if you are interested. The Radio Analog PTRX7300 module was very easy to install into the IC-7300. The kit comes with all the necessary wires and allows the use of the factory tuner harness. It even comes with the coax to connect the RSPdx SDR Play unit. I love it! I got everything from HRO except for the panadapter module which I wished was carried in the states.
    Thanks for the video David!

Hello Dave, my interests are in the use of SDR on the 2 meter, 70 meter and 23cm bands as down-conversion IF's for the 13cm & 3cm band. I was a little disappointed there was no mention of of application or performance in those areas since there is a need to monitor wide spectrum for activity like EME or other weak signal operation.

  • @fredflintstone8048
    @fredflintstone8048 4 года назад +1

I recently purchased the RSPdx and am quite pleased with it's performance. However I am a bit disappointed because I bought it for two reasons. I had also hoped to use it with the Spectrum analyzer software downloadable from the same website. At present (May 9, 2020) the spectrum analyzer software still does not support the RSPdx. You'll find the statement below in the section on the spectrum analyzer software section. It looks like it's taking a lot longer than a few weeks. This was long before the Covid-19 situation arose, so I tend not to accept that being the cause or an acceptable situation to blame for the delay. I suppose it's possible that it's not being worked on at all, or that something about the RSPdx design makes it's inclusion much harder than anticipated.
December 4th 2019 update: Work is underway on adding the new RSPdx - this will take a few weeks - check back here for a status update.

    • @elansteve

The FT-901 does not have CAT so cannot be automatically synchronized, but you can use an RSP to help you find signals. You will need something like the MFJ-1708B-SDR to protect the RSP during transmit. You can find signals on the RSP spectrum display, read off the frequency and then manually tune the rig to that frequency.

I sure don’t want to have to have a dedicated separate antenna for a panadapter? I’m pretty new, trying to sort out the How of what you’re describing. If splitting the antenna feed, what are you using to effectively make that happen? Thanks.

The steep learning curve is why I sold my SDR (another brand) and bought the Icom IC7300 where it's all built in and ready to go. I also had PC crashing problems when I would transmit at 100W, because RF got back into the connected laptop. I tried everything and just gave up. In the same setup, the Icom has never crashed and the learning curve is a breeze. SDR will spoil you, when done correctly.

How does this receiver compare, say, to a high end transceiver. in other words, would this be a relatively cheap way of hearing those weaker dx stations? I know it can't transmit, but that's the thing, I can use this to hear, then use my not top of the line HF transceiver to try and make more contacts. On paper it seems fun listening to all that spectrum, but after a while I bet it gets boring since there's no interaction that can go on outside of the ham bands...

Not ideal but about all that's practical at my house at present. If I really got enthused with DXing, I suppose I might eventually spring for an outdoor, but not available at present.
