    Great video!
    Note of safety: Add acid to the water, not the other way around. It is much safer to do. When sulfuric acid touches water, it quickly heats up. By adding it into water slowly you can minimize the amount of heat generated at one time.
    Why buy the plates instead of making them? With all the other lead casting that is going on, it seems natural to cast the plates as well. I ask just in case there is a special reason I don't know about

    • @dejayrezme8617
      @dejayrezme8617 3 года назад +1

      I'd be curious about that too.
      Did he cast all the terminals out of lead or tin-lead solder?
      It's possible thin plates are significantly harder to cast because as soon as the lead touches the form it cools down. So long thing plates are harder to make. Maybe you'd have to roll them through a press from a thicker sheet of lead.

    • @benjaminpainter378
      @benjaminpainter378 3 года назад +4

      @@dejayrezme8617 I figure if you heat up the press it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I have been able to cast pretty thin sheets of metal for other projects.

    • @dejayrezme8617
      @dejayrezme8617 3 года назад +1

      @@benjaminpainter378 Yeah I've see a "how it's made" video and apparently it's no problem casting lead into these shapes.
      I think you also create most of the plate by pressing lead oxide paste together to get a larger surface area. So you can't just cast them (see wikipedia)

    • @losttownstreet3409
      @losttownstreet3409 2 года назад +1

      @@dejayrezme8617 you still could cast them with lead, but you'll get another type of battery. For solar, traction and usv batteries you could use solid lead plate battery. They have a higher lifetime but don't do as much current. The oxid forms itself at the first charge. This form was used for the first battery buses and trains as it's possible to make easy maintenance with solid lead electrodes with spacers. They cleaned the sludge, a quick clean of the solid electrodes, refill the electrolyte and the train was ready for the next week.

    • @dejayrezme8617
      @dejayrezme8617 2 года назад

      @@losttownstreet3409 Thanks. Yeah I've since read some more and tried to read a paper on nife / nickel ferrite battery. Apparently current and power density is all about surface area and they are boosting nife batteries using carbon nanotubes that are then coated with the right nickel oxide and whatnot.
      So it seems making it yourself is totally possible with various chemistries but simpler processes requires far more materials and more weight to achieve enough capacity and power.

    Do you have a video on how to make both the positive and the negative (ground) plates? I am looking for the chemical composition of the plates of the lead acid cell.

    • @JonathanH13
      @JonathanH13 2 года назад +7

      The negative ground plate can be made using a lead sheeting. The positive plate is lead dioxide, which is toxic and difficult to work with. But if you start with a lead sheet for the positive plate, a lead dioxide coating will form as the battery is used. The sulphuric acid will oxidise the lead once a positive charge is supplied by the battery charger. This will reduce the strength of the acid, so you need to start with a less diluted sulfuric acid than you would normally use.

    Woah! Not only in english, but with clear & precise diction! I've a friend from Pakistan Whom I used to work for, & he has a bit of an Urdu brogue to his speech. I couldn't love him more dearly if he were my actual biological brother, but I have unbelievable difficulty understanding him over the phone. 😂😂 In person, no problem. Must be some kind of lip reading thing happening. It's so tough finding one of these videos with valuable information in them, only to find that ridiculous youtube translator to be the only option to decode it. Your data is a treasure trove! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Those pouring dies, though - kind of seem like they need a receiving spout on their side to make the pour easier. Just a thought.

    I have heard somewhere that if you replace positive plates with thicker ones and overall raise the cells a little bit in the packaging (could use simple plastic bars assembled to a # crate) you will get a much better lasting battery.
    If youre going through all of that, might as well consider doing that.
    Also charge the battery if you got time and flush the acid into a container if its possible to desulfate it even slightly.

    • @luckydubeinrc5165

      Most lead acid batteries fail because there is so little space beneath the plates. As the cells shed it builds and shorts the plates. If you look up "Delco farm light plant batteries" you will find glass jar cells from the 1900-1920s. You'll see how much space they left beneath the plates, you could observe and replace/repair individual cells

    This is a very informative video. That said, though, I really, REALLY wish there was more emphasis placed on safety here.
    1) Make sure that what you're doing is in accordance with local environmental protection regulations. In the USA, batteries are treated as hazardous waste - which is not to say you're not allowed to restore a battery, but if you're caught being this careless with lead and electrolytes, you will be certain to get hammered with a hefty fine.
    2) Despite being simple, there are very good reasons why lead-acid batteries are as expensive as they are. Look at the PPE and safety equipment lists below to see what I mean.
    2) Proper PPE - this is not something you want to be doing while wearing chanklas!
    --Wear good leather boots designed to keep liquids out (preferably with steel toe protection, because lead is HEAVY and dropping a monster battery this size on your foot is a guaranteed trip to the hospital).
    --Wear gloves rated for protection against hydrochloric acid.
    --Use properly rated respirators for lead dust (which can do horrible things to your lungs) and acid vapors (ditto).
    --Face shields and goggles are an absolute must when cutting lead with a chisel, handling molten lead, and acids as well.
    --ALWAYS use leather gauntlets when handling molten lead - even if it's "cool" for a molten metal, it's still molten metal. It WILL give you instant 3rd degree burns! (Think: Liquid Branding Iron)
    3) Other safety considerations:
    --Do not do this in an enclosed space! Work in a thoroughly well ventilated area.
    --Have a neutralizing agent for hydrochloric acid on-hand at all times! And make sure there is plenty of it - better to have too much than not enough!
    --Emergency Eye Wash Bottles. Do not cheap-out here. You will thank yourself if you ever have to use them. But if you have to go cheap, then a water hose with a ball-valve on the end will work, too. Just make sure the hose has pressure before you start working - you do not want to be fumbling around while acid is eating your eyes. (Hence the ball valve at the end.) And set it up away from where you're melting and handling lead - the last thing you need is to accidentally splash water onto molten metal.
    --EXPLOSION HAZARD!!! Charging lead-acid batteries can produce hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas in atmospheric air is EXPLOSIVE. Exercise proper charging procedures to minimize electrical sparks and arcs, and DO NOT have any open flames nearby!
    --Always have an A-B-C-Rated fire extinguisher on hand. In fact, have two or three on-hand. You can't go wrong with having more than one.
    Remember: being thrifty is all fine and good, but not at the cost of life and limb. Be sober, be aware, and be safe!

      It's sulfuric acid that's used in batteries, not hydrochloric acid.. battery acid is only 35% acid when new, it's not going to instantly eat flesh, i recover battery acid and distill it to get 98% acid for lab use and even 98% won't instantly eat flesh at room temperature, you easily have a couple of minutes to wash it off before it starts to burn

      The acid concentration can be anywhere between 15% to 50% acid to water. If you start with one liter of water, then slowly add up to one liter of acid, waiting for the solution to cool down, as required. Do not add the water to the acid.

      yes, but i have noticed, those in the indian sub continent are not so hung up on the 'health n safety' bit. but they make up for it with there unassuming skill. just look at how he pours the acid.. no messing around with funnels. how thick gloves do you need? mind you i would wear a 'proper' mask for those fumes. and dont think about grinding lead.. a scrapper is best. i'v seen little kids doing arc welding and they give them 'sun glasses' ?? i also saw a good old boy in crete just squinting while welding plowshares. his technique was perfected though.

      @leeknivek 3 года назад +2

      You could, but you would need it to be vaporized also to have it suck out the oxygen. The carbon powder would need to become carbon gas or carbon monoxide, it can pick up the oxygen from the lead oxide and become carbon dioxide.
      The easier way to do this is to melt the lead in a reducing fire and soaking it in the heat, as long as you have a reducing atmosphere you can remove the oxides.

    Great video on how a battery is built/rebuilt. But there are no details for making or buying the tools, positive plates, ground plates or separators, as he states, "you can start your own business". This video seems to only satisfy the curiosity of how things work and a procedure to accomplish the construction, noting that Replies/comments are not being answered concerning how to get the materials or tools to do the job. Then again, I may be missing something.

    This video proved me how "free" we are. In EU you would be not allowed to sell your own batteries, as you not "certified"

      @@silverwolfcr9565 In the UK you'd now find it very difficult to even get your hands on the acid.

    Each jar should be washed separately so that there was no self-contract. It's not a cucumber barrel that you've covered and coped with.

    The Lead Acid Batteries sold in the United States of America CANNOT be OPENED for this rebuild, I have cut them to small pieces trying to determine how to reuse them and the companies that sell car batteries here make sure we can't rebuild them.
    Does anyone know how I can find a rebuild-able battery box?

    ahhh on the begining, guy pour old battery acid just on the ground, can you imagine how much acid he pour in 1 year ? that’s insane it is not recycle of battery it is demaging of environment

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 2 года назад

      This method is for areas where environmentalism is impractical due to extreme poverty, but the acid could certainly be saved and filtered to reduce expense. I'd have also pointed out how to reduce lead contact hazards but that's pointless too.

    I don't know if this is practical, but it would be really interesting if there was a DIY process to take a normal vehicle 12v starting battery and convert it into a 12v deep cycle battery. I understand the basic layout is the same but the plate composition is somewhat different.
