Alternative positions and learning how to look for the core pitch when playing sustained notes in those positions is probably the best of slide&ear mechanics. Very useful for sight-reading and negotiating slide movement more fluidly and with less stress. In karate you learn the kata, in MMA you learn how to survive an actual fight. True positions is the essence of sound, but ease of motion especially in fast passages is what gets you thru gig alive.
even as a non trombone player this was very interesting to listen to, who would have thought that being able to roll R's makes you a better trombone player? what a fun fact!
Thank you so much for the advice!! I’ve only been playing trombone for a few months now, and I had to play 2 intermediate pieces in a competition that I wanted to try out for. I got in and got 6th chair and what you said really helped me out!
So I’m a professional pianist/accompanist at a Middle School. I have three hours of choir and two hours of band. One class is 6th grade beginners and half the class is learning trombones so the band director suggested I learn it with them to help them. I’m doing pretty good (kids think so!) my question is am I TOO OLD to learn this? I practice for a couple hours each weekend-too busy during the week but I’m playing at school. Am I crazy?? I’ll be 67 next month.
Wow, congratulations on the trombone journey!! I definitely don’t think there’s a “too old,” though the more extreme (i.e. high) ranges might be slightly tougher. The biggest way to get better is with consistency to build up muscle strength/muscle memory! As little as 5 minutes every day is fine-just buzzing a mouthpiece is enough! You can play easy songs, or make siren sounds, or do long tones…plenty of ways to buzz :)
@@AllisonMartin Thank you! The band teacher is just wonderful and I’m having fun learning. I have to agree with you on the high notes though…..oh boy! Again I thank you and have subscribed to watch all your wonderful videos.
