The story behind this one is...interesting, to say the least. In Japan, these machines were officially licensed (to help meet demand, since it was an unexpected hit), but all mention of Nintendo was removed by Falcon. Then, it saw an unlicensed US release, which resulted in legal action by Nintendo. EDIT: I also wouldn't be surprised if this was based off a prototype of Donkey Kong, since both Crazy Climber and Donkey Kong used Z80 processors, with Falcon rewriting the sound and graphics handling to work on Crazy Climber hardware. That could explain the somewhat different barrel physics, the somewhat janky nature, and the lower difficulty.
Well i tout that this game was ment for the european market and neither japan or the us,but once this game was also released in both the us and japan without nintendo’s permission, nintendo took action against falcon to no longer allow to distribute any units anymore, not even in europe, by the way,how could nintendo had licensed such weird version because the colors and sounds are different with little resablence to that of the original game.
@@recursiveidentity just picked one up. The game play is identical. I prefer this version. The jump sound is stupid funny. I’m having a blast 💥 with this.
I remember they had this at one of the stores in the city I lived in. You could just smack the door to where you deposit the quarters and it would give you a credit.
You're not talking about Germany, are you? ;-) I played the same way with a Pinball machine. The only difference was that you had to lift it 5cm/2inch. And a visite to England was a must. I remember seeing this in the arcades during the 80s. I enjoyed this version better because it was easier than the normal donkey Kong. The arcade owner must have had the settings on low.
I think Matt Makin is correct, this seems to be built off of the Crazy Climber hardware. The jump sound that Jumpman makes is the same sound that the King Kong character in Crazy Climber makes. I also hear the climbing sound (when climbing the ladders) and the falling sign sound (when Crazy Kong beats his chest) from Crazy Climber. It was the first thing that jumped out at me in this so so knock off.
Yes, it was originally made to run on Crazy Climber hardware, hence the name "Crazy Kong". They later made their own single-PCB version which still used off-the-shelf TTL chips.
Something that hasn’t been talked about is that Mario(or Jumpman)‘s sprite is actually similar to the Mario sprite from the original Super Mario Bros from 1985, along with its sequel, Super Mario Bros 2 (The Lost Levels in the West) from 1986.
I just picked up a crazy Kong arcade for free. I also have the original donkey Kong cabinet 🗄. I can tell you this, same game play. Different color pallets and sound. Both awesome 😎
I first discovered Crazy Kong as a kid when I was on a trip to Canada with my family back in 1983. I played it in a hotel in Toronto, and found it to be quite a bit easier than the original Donkey Kong.
Evidently this Kong is part owl. Also, this sounds like it's running on Crazy Climber hardware, which would explain the strange digitized sound effects.
Jess Ragan You're right. Crazy Kong is based on a Crazy Climber board. I have this game in my arcade. The coloring isn't as far off as on this demo though. The green only comes out on the fourth level of the "How High Can You Try" part...
The first version of Donkey Kong I ever played. I know some of the colours are messed up, but I still prefer the sound in this version to the proper one.
OMG! I've played this clone! And not on an emulator, I've actually played this in an arcade! What's even funnier is that the had the real Donkey Kong there two, so why they had this one out I don't know.
From what I heard, Nintendo couldn't keep up with the demand of Donkey Kong in Japan so Falcon created their own version called Crazy Kong and helped Nintendo out.
I first saw this as Congorilla. Never heard of Donkey Kong. When we finally did see and hear of it, we all agreed we would rather play Congorilla because the stick was for righties. Donkey Kong was for lefties.
Exactly! I grew up w/ Congorilla. When I ran into a DK machine, I would have to play cross handed because the set up was different, and better in congorilla

I think I've played this version before here in the states. There was a small arcade that had a number of bootlegs that I use to go to in the '90s.
@dejon71 This is actually an officially liscensed Donkey Kong machine. Nintendo had the liscense to the name and characters, but the game itself, the code belonged to an external team that nintendo had develop the game, and had in fact breached contract with, resulting in these "knock-offs".
Not a rip off but a legitimately licensed version that the developers Falcon created for non-U.S. (and non-Japanese) markets. Doesn't play or look or sound as good as the Nintendo original, runs off different hardware.
Yeah, I guess masochists would prefer this version, as it is harder. However when Nintendo was relocating in America, a ton of Crazy kong cabinets got smuggled in

Actually this version is a ripoff that got temporarily licensed for japan only because they couldn't meet demand both at home and in the USA. So if found in Japan only, and with the licensing sticker on the board, it IS legal. anywhere else it's a bootleg.
i got to admit. when Mario jumps, it sounds like he's yelling TRAMP! it makes me laugh everytime-(it's only redeeming factor) still love the original 1981 one, though.
