I found that a great way to make it loom really old and beaten, and give it a really rusty texture (like the movie) is to use a layer of thick spray paint, and cover it in fine sand while it's still tacky. Then put another few layers on top to seal it it. Worked fantastically for me, plus it lets you add scratches, dents, e.t.c. by carving it into the sand.
I spent the entire month of October building this, and I just want to say thank you so damn much. Thanks to this video, I even won a trophy for best costume.
Well Dax your tutorial is still going strong 15years later. I've almost finished the helmet but it's a little nose heavy at the moment, hopefully I can balance it out! Thank you so much for this!
I'm happy to still be helping people! Since all the big companies took over RUclips, my hits have taken a huge fall (due to algorithms I'm sure) but as long as the small audience I have is happy and finding this stuff, then I'm happy!!
I followed this tutorial a few years ago and my PH came out bad ass. I'm going to home depot now to start making another one for an up coming convention. THANKS DAX XOXO
I just wana thank you for this video (and the second part too), I just made my first cosplay and won a contest in college! So I really appreciate your effort and talent
Thanks for the intructions on the costume. You elaborated each step by step process well. Me and my friends freaked out the kids on the block. Great Sword for the win!
i'm trying this stuff from Sears called vinyl spackling in a red tube . it looks identical to polyfilla but i havent tried it yet but i'll let you know. polyfilla is a similar deviation from spackling paste which can be found in most hardware stores. just make sure the stuff can be sanded and is flexible and paintable & it should be ok.
I want to thank you so so much for uploading this wonderful tutorial! Thanks to you, I made my very own Pyramid Head helmet for Halloween this year, and it looks great! :D
toyokanin - Hey thanks for the suggestion. I actually have completed the whole costume now. I bought 3 yards of a colored fabric. And cut and sewed it together with one of those $15.00 hand sewing machines lol. I had to iron on a fabric underneath to thicken it up so it wouldn't ride between legs but it came out pretty good. I know one thing I will never sew again lol. Not for me
i just finished my costume! thanks so much for putting up this video. i put paint on mine to make it appear rusty and bloody, yay! thanks again for taking the time to do this.
I scaled the dimensions down to fit my size (I'm 6'2", but I'm slender - only 170 lb.) and so far its turning out fantastic, once I finish it I'll be sure to post a response!
Depends on what area you live in, I guess. The NW has the Haggen stores which all carry the Multi-grip, but I would check any major grocery chain in your area. Hope that helps some.
Glad you liked it! Did you see my final product video? I have been playing around recording Halo with my wires and want to put a short together. have any ideas? we can meet up with a few others and I will post it!
made the costume forever ago, used floral netting instead of multigrip, still worked awesome, costume took up too much room so i had to throw it away, now that i have more room i am currently making another, amazing videos, cosplayers hero man especially the ones that make their shit like me, good job
A1 Should be fine, Remember how heavy this gets! And don't forget the detail with the 2nd and 3rd layers. Hope I get to see one of these foamboard PH's, a few people are making them!!
Yo Dax. Were about to glue on the back panels. It's looking awesome, thanks for this. If I win the £50 prize for best costume next weekend, you wont get any of it but I will post a re! Cheers again!
British Edward Norton?!? LoLz.. Best tutorial on this costume ive seen yet, im gonna use it to make this costume over the summer for this upcoming halloween!
Dax you have inspired me to make this costume for the October expo we have in London, Your guide shall definately help me in making this XD Lucky Enough I got a LOT of cardboard and most of the tools already! XD
This is fantastic! I've been abig fan of Silent Hill for years and I've always wanted to make one of these! I can make one for this coming fright night! Thankyou so much for posting this!
I'm hoping to be Pyramid Head for Halloween this year (I know it's a bit early to be thinking about that, but I have a lot of free time on my hands so I might as well start planning ahead) so this is gonna be very useful when I start working on it! Even if plans change and I decide to be someone else like Michael Myers or Ghost Face, I can still use this for cosplay purposes.
Definitely NOT too early. I notice an influx of hits a month before Halloween and I get lots of messages of people panicking trying to get it right before the big day. Now is the time to make a perfect PH! Lots of free time and you can take your time. Good luck and I hope it goes well for you!
Funny you should say! I was looking at buying so platforms. Shoes from the 60's! You can find them in old shops, ebay and the good old Internet.... Or get a old pair of boots. Wood and a nail gun/ drill. you can see what to do!!
Thank you for this, Im study piano and my teacher decided to do a special recital for movies songs, so I choose Silent Hill Theme, and she ask to have on stage something that represent the movie so a friend of mine will be using this costume will Im playing the song :D and also I have a violinist making this song more beautiful
I went for fly screen net actually. It isn't optimal, and I have 2 inner layers of it, to make it more dense, except the layer on the outside. But it does the trick I guess.
Challenge accepted x2. I successfully made the helmet once before, but I made the mistake of leaving it in my car when it was over 100 degrees. Needless to say, he didn't make it through the day. ;_; But now I can make improvements! SILENT HILL: REVELATIONS, I WILL BE AT YOU IN COSTUME.
I. Did. It. After weeks of working, I've finally completed this helmet just in time for Halloween!! Thank you Dax so much for helping me make this masterpiece of a costume!! Now to just wait until dusk, mwahahahahahahaa!!!
It will work but it will be heavy! This helmet was heavy and it was two layers of card!!!!! I do look foward to seeing your finishd product, send a pic or video RE!
Thanks man, although I used chicken wire and paper mache, it seemed a little easier then when I tried cardboard. Anyway, my P Head sculpture looks great now.

the first line is a 1 meter line, then at the end have a 36 degree angle, the second line is 60 cm(For the first side) & the same for the second side & for the back he had put annotations for it.
Just use my measurements and add a extra panel down the front. bottom of pannal a good foot and a half. Also forget the 'eye holes' and bolts. If you want to do the original PH just add a small square hole to his left (Our right) this will be your 'eye hole'
I would love to see your fan based video once you have finished! Wish I had a bunch of filming buddies that liked SH but I seen to be the only fan in my area.
i think he means that it's total of 80 from edge to edge. the line should be straight for 70cm. after that, you start the curve which will be 10cm by itself.
brilliant tutorial, thank you so much. my partner and I are planning on teaming up as Pyramid head and one of the SH nurses for this coming Halloween London MCM, we'll definitely be using this video.
I need advice about caulk for filling in pyramid head. I live in America so i don't have polyfilla, so i was looking for an alternative here. I found a bathroom and kitchen caulk, it's not waterproof and it says on the front it's paintable, will this work for smoothing out the cracks in my Phead? When we do the trim around the Phead, how many layers of trim total? I thought i saw you add 2 layers of trim over the initial front triangle pieces but my fiancee thinks it's 3 layers.
Haha, ended up building this for anime boston this year. I have two more days to finish it up from where it's at now. I'll be posting pictures after it's finished.
there. all done. i spent all.day. doing it yesterday lol, really sorry for the bad quality in the response, but you can kind of see it! i have a pic of it too. thankyou, leigh XD. im -amazed- i still have hair left! but without this vid, the majority of us wouldnt know where to even begin. so thanks, really. ^-^ however..you jammy so n so!!! *shakes fist* stop making it look so bloody easy!!!!! XDDDD
Wood!! Hell mine is really heavy and its just cardboard! Good on ya and really looking forward to your videos! I'm looking forward to see pH from the game... Are you putting the small square hole on the front? I noticed the original design had this.
I work in a department store, and we get some big sturdy boxes in from things like toilet paper or cereal, but I could probably only get the proper length if I broke a box down and flattened it out. So let's say the cardboard has a fold in it, due to top or side edges. Would it work out well if this were the case?
Do you mean the back? or front? The front are large, the back are smaller, left to right are all the same. Remember that the the back triangle has a cut down it (the middle) just enough to bent the cardboard. Some people just cut then out I have noticed and stuck then together.
would love a pdf of the instructions and measurements as I keep going back to the video in my office then have to run to the workshop area to make the cuts!...4 times now!
Just different artist impression. Also I did hear on the DVD something about movement being restrictive. I actually Like the move PH helmet more, something about how sharp it looks...
unfortunately the original PH would be to much trouble right now so I will stick with the movie version He was pretty kick-ass Maybe later this year I will use your advice and make the original

Years later and I am still obsessed with this video.
Are you still obsessed?
I would recommend TV boxes as your cardboard. Its smooth and strong.
Polyfilla is a paste that drys solid. You use it on walls so just find a filler!
A few people said that....
Glad to have helped fellow Silent Hill Fans!!
I am using this video to help me build a pyramid head costume. Its working great so far. About to attatch the side to the hard hat.
thank you so much for this dax, mine hasn't turned out quite as pretty as yours but I'm really stoked with it. gonna be the best halloween ever!

Yeah, at 1st the helmet beneath holds it to gather. But after a few layers of card, paint, glue etc the thing will just hold.
Just scour down the center to concave.
Yeah, when it's glued together try it on, then trim the excess card from the shoulders!
Wow, this is getting so epic, good job
