      @@warrendoris9669, The problem with viewing these old fights is you have to take in to context where these fighters were during this stage of their careers. Ken Norton fought Muhammad Ali twice in 1973 and again in 1976. He was in his absolute prime when he had his fights with Ali. Muhammad Ali was still very good but still not the Ali of the mid to late 60's. Ken's last hurrah was his classic fight with Larry Holmes in June of 1978. Ken wasn't the same after that battle with Holmes. He had a nice win over Randy Stephens then he was iced in 1 round by Earnie Shavers. He fought Scott LeDoux to a draw after that and he was virtually stopped by LeDoux as he was hanging over the ropes about to be stopped as the final bell went off. He had managed to win a spilt decision over Randall Tex Cobb before being KO'd by Cooney. He had a history of struggling with big punchers like Foreman, Shavers & Cooney. He was just past his prime and Cooney was up and coming. Gerry had KO 'd veterans Jimmy Young and Ron Lyle leading up to this fight. This is what Happens in Boxing when you stay around too long, it's called Matchmaking and these promoters will feed veteran fighters who still have a name to these young Lions.

    This one is brutal. I think there are five punches in the end, that Norton don't even brace himself for. You can be hit clean on your chin, right on the button, but you still absorb some of the force simply by bracing yourself for impact - Unless you don't see the punch, which often leads to the most spectacular KO's.
    Anyway, back to this fight. At 3.30 Norton is caught by a Cooney uppercut, as he leans forward to avoid the hooks. At this point Norton is knocked out, his senses are gone. But he is somehow held up by the turnbuckle, so Cooney is able to land a further FIVE full leverage hooks, right on the chin, before the referee finally steps in.
    Thank god nothing happened to Norton that night. There are plenty of footage of fighters dying in the ring, and this was not unlike that.

      Gerry probably would have been better served to ho after Mike Weaver first. He had originally signed to fight Weaver first but it never materialized. I think he could have won against Weaver because Mike was a notorious slow starter. Larry Holmes was a dominant World Champion who always fought with a chip on his shoulder. Larry would fight to the death to keep his title. Gerry fought his ass off against Holmes and in my opinion could have beaten any other Heavyweight on that night. He should have been back in the ring within 3 to 6 months after the Holmes fight. Instead it was over 2 years and would end up being 7 total rounds in 5 years before he fought Michael Spinks and almost 2 more years before he squared off with George Foreman. Just way too much inactivity and he just beat himself up to much after the Holmes fight. He fought a good fight that night but in his mind he felt he let alot of people down. That's what can happen when you start listening to people and reading your on press clippings of everyone telling you how great you are and that you are supposed to win. The weight of it all really just messed with his head. He should have been proud of his performance against one of the all time great Champions who when he fought Larry, Larry was at his absolute best. A lesser Larry Holmes wouldn't have won on that night. Gerry had nothing to be ashamed of. He allowed that one fight to define him and it should have been just the beginning.

    After that brutal win over Norton It seemed like Cooney was invincible and was on his way to becoming a dominate force in the heavyweight division.. Cooney as such an anomaly. Never saw someone that tall, get that much knee bend (sitting on punches) to generate force. In this regards, I would saw Tyson was a more valid comparison. George Foreman flattened Norton in less than two rounds. Ernie Shavers crushed him at 1:58 of round one. Cooney left Norton wide-eyed and crumpled in a corner after 54 seconds. However, there were fighters who were bothered by Norton's unorthodox style. Perez is a horrible ref. This was not Conney's fault. Second he needed a lot more experience (and a stronger
    lower body for more mobility) Cooney that is. He appeared to be stronger in his lower body in this fight because he bent
    at the knees to come forward instead of standing straight up. Norton with his experience should have not stood still
    especially in the corner. But that's the thing with Cooney's punches. He can paralyze you with one clean (or otherwise)
    shot.

    Gerry Cooney looked great vs an over-the-hill Ken Norton but when he had to fight a real heavyweight in Larry Holmes he was exposed as a flash in the pan here today gone tomorrow. He was knocked-out by Michael Spinks and George Foreman. He was a monster on this night at MSG.

    • @josephshields2922
      @josephshields2922 Год назад

      Same could be said for Frazier. He was tough on ali but his style coming at you was tailor made for Foreman. I actually think Joe was a better fighter than Foreman against other Fighters. He beat Ali and gave him 2 more tough fights whereas Foreman was an easy Ali KO. They both stopped Chuvalo but Joes win was more devastating, Also Joe fought more top rated fighters on the way to the title like Bonavena, Machen, Doug Jones, Tony Doyle, Jerry quarry, and buster Mathis. Take a look at the records of the guys George fought, His best opponent before fighting Joe was Gregorio Peralta who went the distance with George and some say won the fight,

    Both were one-dimensional fighters, who only had one punch.

      That's the difference between a guy like Ali, and even Holmes, and Cooney. It's just barbaric what he did. Yes, a fighter is supposed to keep going until it's called, but, really, isn't part of him human?
      I hate Ken Norton with a passion, but even I can't stand to watch such brutality. The worst part is, this ass Perez let Cooney butcher Jimmy Young for way too long in a previous fight. What is wrong with this guy? Why was he even allowed to ref again?

      Everyone watching has all the answers as to what he should have, or could have, done... Until you yourself are in a fight, you don't get it. Boxing is serious business. If Cooney eases up, Norton could lash out with a bomb of his own and then everyone would be saying, "why didn't Cooney finish him when he had the chance!"....
