Ben, forgot one really important feature: this is a twelve hour chronograph! It times events well beyond sixty minutes where most quartz chronos just stop--including the Bulova Lunar Pilot costing five times more. I've owned this watch since 2016. Been to the opera several times. Today the strap is a bit scuffed yet still serviceable. And it looks great with a silver Milanese mesh. Cold.
Excellent point, many analogue chronographs sub £200 only time to one hour which is ok but a bit limited,a quick look on line and I can't really find any 12 hour chronos,a lot have "24 hour"dials which isn't really much practical use.
@@Andrew.W75 usually the parcel tape strap is a bit of a hair monster. I found it works best on a nato scotch tape. You could always dress it up a bit with a woven twine, but I'm not made of money.
Laugh if you must but Timex makes a chronograph watch. I bought one a year ago, it was $75 and I've had no problems with it at all. I bought it to fill the chronograph vacancy in my collection. Essentially just to say I owned a "chrono'" but as it has turned out it is a pretty damn good watch. Had I not bought the Timex Chrono, I would certainly be picking this one up. Great review 👍
This one looks really well made. The seconds hand also seems to hit the right places, which i take is a sign of good quality quartz movement. Vote: Cool. For alternative on chronograph, it seems the Seagull 1963 prices are trending down. They used to be over $200 but now, $150. Maybe next year they’ll be $100, who knows.
Yes, not many affordable quartz are able to land second ticks right at their proper markings. I think Seiko and Citizen have many of affordable quartz models that made it.
Michael Hargis it’s a U.K. retail store which sells a variety of household goods including jewellery and watches. Certain Casio’s, Citizens and Seiko’s are sometimes even cheaper than on amazon.
Got the watch delivered yesterday form Amazon.. It’s beautiful. Cost £78 because I took out the amazon credit card ( £20 discount ) and cleared the amount when it arrived. I didn’t pay for the 48hr. Came from the US in eight days free..
Hey Ben, this model is very similar to my first ever proper watch, that was given to me by my Grandad (quite unexpectedly). It has the same sub dial layout (in black and white), with a black dial, and raised steel hour markers (with a somewhat reflective appearance). The watch also has some brushed finishing around the case and on the bracelet. The serial number is 7t92-olvo. I recommend this model, if anyone wants a more sporty version of the watch in this video (however I’m not quite sure how available this model is). Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Ben. This watch is Ice Cold for me (although this opinion is obviously biased).
I own both the cream and the black styles of the Seiko watches shown here. I love them both. What's not to like for under 100 USD? I was not thrilled with the Red Band on the cream watch. So I switched it out with a darker mahogany/coffee Armani brand, and I like it better. But that's just a matter of personal taste. The gentleman in this video must have skinny wrists I have medium-sized wrists and the watch looks even on the small side. Most of my newer watches are 42 mm diameter. I absolutely love the look and the brand. Highly recommended.
Ice cold! This is the one that got me into chronographs, and remains one of my favourite chronograph designs. IMPORTANTLY, at this price point, it's one of the few that has a 12-hour totaliser. There are quartz watches worth hundreds of pounds more that don't get you that... enough said!
I have owned the Seiko snde27 chronograph for several years and its a great watch similar to this one. I can recommend Seiko - quality for the price :-)
Seiko has superior fit and finish compared to Chinese made watches even 3 times the price, in general. The only downside is that Seiko generally wouldn't use a sapphire crystal on anything priced lower than around USD250.
The Seiko is a nice enough watch but I feel it comes a distant second to the Seagull 1963 Chronograph. This can also be sourced (online) for around £100. It is better proportioned and has a legitimate mechanical, column wheel, chronograph of, originally, a Swiss Design (Venus 175). This is probably the best value chrono anywhere right now.
Ben! A request - do a new 37mm and less watches please! I have skinny hands! And being in India where market is dominated by 40mm+ isn't helpful. I currently have the classic models of casio and timex.
Thanks Ben, great review. I like it a lot but am confused by conflicting size as some vendors reckon it as 38mm and others such as yourself as 40mm. One reviewer said one of the con’s of the piece was it’s diminutive size 😳 👍🏼
For me, one of the big selling points is practicality: they run for years before needing a new battery and are very reliable and long lived. Can't say that about the Chinese alternatives at this price.
Was thinking about this watch after a previous Seiko chronograph I loved gave up the ghost, and this video caused me to make the purchase--will let you know how it goes!
How about Timex waterbury chrono? They look pretty similar to these ones but there are no reviews on them. I have recently bought them and they look amazing. They are my first watch though, so I have no comparison.
i have a beautiful pulsar quartz with that same seiko band red aligator stamped leather and it came with the watch it says seiko on the band and buckle and its correct since pulsar is a cheaper brand from seiko its nice and thin and the entire dial glows for hours after being out in the sun or under a lamp
I love the fact they removed the 12, 3, 6, and 9 to make space for the extra dials. It is one of my biggest pet peeves when a high end watch cuts into a dial number. I just saw this on a IWC Portugieser Chrono and it looks like the designer messed up and couldn’t be bothered to fix it.
Can’t knock Seiko’s. Always good value and easy to sell on, unlike others in this price bracket if you decide to flip it. Looks great, especially on that strap. I think it’s a cool watch
I have a seiko watch from 1992 it’s the quartz chronograph sq100 ,it’s been the best watch I have ever had ,I paid £ 98 .00 for it but the original price was £180 , I was wandering how much it would cost to have it cleaned and new seals put in as I won’t trust it in water being this old .
I’m wearing this as my beater - had to ditch the horrible red strap in favour of a beige canvas Archer strap. The Lume is rubbish. Good for timing my 5 year old on missions. Tempted to have a go at brushing the case. I like it but I don’t love it.
Ben, what are you thoughts on the Seiko SSB341 (silver) $250 US and the SSB342 (rose gold) $295 US. I'd appreciate your thoughts. They are similar to the SNDC31 however they have applied arabic numerals at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 hour marks, with angled indices on the other hour marks. seikousa.com/collections/essentials/products/ssb341 seikousa.com/products/ssb342?variant=28892855795764 I'm really thinking about purchasing the rose gold one. Thanks.
Not my bag at all - I prefer chronos with a more 60s/70s vibe to them, whereas I think this harks back to an earlier era - but not a bad watch for the price. I actually think the printed dial might be more vintage appropriate, even though it makes it perhaps a little vanilla. Applied markers weren't necessarily that common back in the day. I can see the appeal even though it's not for me so I'm going to call this one cool. The Casio probably would have landed somewhere between cool and ice cold had I been more on the ball.
I disagree about the strap, I have a Seiko Kinetic that came with the black version of that strap, and while it's padded well, it feels like it's made of plastic. Also the Citizen Quartz Chrono at the same price is admittedly a bit classier, with similar looks but a brushed finish on the case. You also get a choice of braclet or strap.
this watch is deffently not my cup of tea, but it looks nice executet. nice to see a chronograph, that uses the central hand as a chronograph hand and not a subdial. a bit of a missed opportunity is, that this watch uses no tachymeter scale on the raised bevel, this maybee would give the watch an even more vintage look. all in all, this watch is not for me, but cool for this pricepoint
Props to Seiko. Not because of the watch but the business sense. This feels like a company getting exactly what they would expect from an honest reviewer and still getting the free positive advertising. Does this feel like exploitation?
I am looking forward to an everyday watch that i can use in the office, with relatively formal outfit. And i just look that timex chronograph watches have everything i need, including a nice indiglo, does anyone have had experience with those?
This one is a bit meh in my opinion. I have reviews of a few chronographs on my channel that are around this price, or even less. That I'd say are better than this one. Great review as always though Ben.
