  • The Epperson House is a historic home on the campus of the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC). Is it haunted? Many strange stories about the house have been told over the years. This documentary about the house appeared in the Kansas City Reel Spirit children's film festival in 2014.

When my mother was a child, she had recurring dreams about this house. They were so vivid and happened so often, she basically had the whole house mapped out. She knew where every room was, every staircase, she knew there was a huge organ and a room FULL of elephant trinkets, weird details like that. She told my grandma about it every time it happened, because wtf who just keeps dreaming about the exact same house that they've never seen before.
Anyways, as she grew up the dreams became less frequent, but she still had them. Cut to adulthood, her sister (my aunt) is going to college at UMKC. As my aunt describes the Epperson house to my family, it becomes very familiar sounding to my mom. They decide to visit one time (back then it was open and students could enter with their IDs). Not only was it the same house from her dreams, my mom LEAD my aunt through it, to each room, each staircase, etc. She told her where the organ was gonna be, and there it was. The only detail that didn't add up, was when she got to the elephant trinket room, there were none in there. Later, they found out someone who lived in the house had collected them back in the day. (I've even found pictures of the Elephants online, dating back to the 1920's.) Needless to say, my family was very spooked and it's still a spine chiller for us all to this day, as we've never come up with any solution as to how she had these dreams. (but, I have heard this story from all 3 of them, and all details match so I believe it 100%)
tldr; even if it's not haunted, something weird is DEFINITELY going on with that house.

That's bizarre. Because I had a dream of this place, too, when I was much younger. Didn't even realize it was the Epperson house until a long time later when I saw it and it stirred the memory of that dream.

Little off subject from the house but would be neat to have an investigation of the Platte Woods area by Zona . I've heard lots of stories and even had incidents occur at my moms snd sister's houses.

So Carter can I have permission to put your piece up on UMKC's cable station?
I used to work in the lab in Film Studies. You did a great job. I want to do a 30 minute show on the history of Epperson. I'd like to open with your piece and to hear your background story on why you decided to do this story? You have a lot of talent and did a great job on the research.

+Bree Davis I also have a piece I did in Film School where I made all of UMKC haunted and had to start a Paranormal Club at UMKC to research it. I'd like you to do your own paranormal investigation on the Epperson House.

The mind will play tricks on you if you let it. As for the shadow that could have been from the moonlight being obscured by clouds or from passing cars.

The university keeps it locked up now. It's not being used for anything right now, because it needs a lot of work to restore the building. Hopefully some day they will raise some money to be able to do some historic restoration and preservation of it.

It’s a shame we have to lower ourselves to superstition, when we would like to listen to an Architect tell us about how the house was built, to describe the woodwork, the influence of Elizabethan building practices. Why isn’t it maintained and the grounds kept up? It happens to be a beautiful example of American’s take on half timber construction.
