    This is helpful!
    Turns out, I did better with my first Origins character (a Human Mage) than I thought.
    First off, while I gave Amell a slightly Antivan-looking skin tone, it was ambiguous enough to go either way. Also, he had deep auburn hair (a shade darker than Leliana's) and a nice goatee. But otherwise, his facial features were strong and prominent...just like Hawke's default form. He actually looked like he could be related to the vanilla Hawke, completely accidentally.
    Secondly, his name was Kieran. Just because I always liked that name. When Morrigan named her son in Inquisition, you can imagine my fannish "NO one's gonna believe this!" glee.

    How old the Warden is I've always thought differed depending on which of the possible Wardens s/he is:
    Human Noble - Early-mid 20s (maybe 22 or 23). Fergus seemed about 28 or 29 to me.
    Human & Elf Mages - Late teens (maybe 19)
    City Elf - Late teens-early 20s (maybe 19 or 20)
    Dalish Elf - Early 20s (maybe 21)
    Dwarf Commoner - Late teens-early 20s (maybe 19 or 20). Rica seemed in her mid 20's to me.
    Dwarf Noble - Mid 20s
    My canon Warden is an Aeducan and I've had it in my head for a while that he starts DA:O at 26. It's may entirely be me, but Trian seemed to be closing on 30 by the start of the Origin and Bhelen was about 22-24.
    PS - great video as usual.

    I kinda liked the Qunari designs in both Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition because they look unique from the other races with their grey/brown/yellow metallic skin, their giant stature and horns. I never really brought how the Qunari looked in Origins since they’re just giant humans without the horns. It’s described in the lore that a Qunari born without horns is signified to have a great destiny which is rare in Qunari society. Sometimes it’s best for a non human race to look completely weird or alien looking to make them stand out. As for the Elves, I liked how they looked in both Origins and Inquisition. Dragon Age 2 made them look like the Na’vi from Avatar.

    great video but uhh... you are incorrect about everywhere in thedas being "pasty white" except rivain, antiva and south ferelden. mike laidlaw said (in the dawn of the seeker commentary) that people from nevarra and other countries that direction closer to the equator have darker skin too.

    • @GhilDirthalen
      @GhilDirthalen  6 лет назад +5

      lor Perhaps he said that- but we haven't really seen that? A large majority of the people we have seen from the Anderfels, Tevinter, and Nevarra have been white. Rivain and Antiva have been the only constant non-white characters.
      Also, do we know where the equator is in Thedas? It wouldn't be in the middle of the map, as that would make Par Vollen cold, and it's not.

    • @NovaHessia
      @NovaHessia 6 лет назад +6

      Considering that just north of Anderfels, and on Seheron, there starts jungle, I'd expect the Equator to be only a little bit north of the northern end of the map, personally.
      Anyway, we know Anders' father came from Anderfels - hence the name, which is really just a nickname (we don't know his actual birth name). And Anders looks rather pale. Granted, his mother was probably Fereldan, but he doesn't even have a *hint* of dark skin tone.
      As for Nevarra, we have Cassandra as the only (I think) example, who also looks rather 'standard white'.

    • @morphintime7780
      @morphintime7780 5 лет назад +2

      @@NovaHessia I was super disappointed by Cassandra (also she looked a bit browner, compareable to a southern Italian in Dragon Age 2 - Inquisition really fucked up her appearance - facial structure and beyond) for this reason. I always imagined Nevarrans as ordinarily brownish, like slightly darker than the Rivani. Idk why Inquisition made her so pale.

  • @ArchangeVie
    @ArchangeVie 4 года назад

    Ooooooh I like lore stuff, I think most of what you said is cannon but I like to think based on codex, story, context etc that for example hawke is actually 29 in the beginning of the game since in legacy it said that Malcolm went to help the warden with corypheus 30 years ago and he said the baby when referring to leandra so I guess hawke was still in the womb, like you said the warden was probably 20 years old in the beginning of origins but like most people know, timelines don’t add up between awakening (or witch hunt In my case) and 2 bc of anders and actually never mind that, I know that it’s not canon but I like to think dao actually happened in 9.18 of the dragon instead of 9.30 bc it had to be at least 2y to do everything including the dlc in dao no way it happened in a year and finally the inquisitor i like to think is 25 in the beginning of inquisition just because

    Regarding skin colours:
    I think the northern counteies in general tend to be darker.
    Tevinter seem to have more dark skinned people on average. Also then prince of DLC I mean the prince of Starkhaven has dark skin.
    If Fenris is from Seheron the people there might have similar skintones to south asians. Ftr, I don't see Varania's appearance as canon because they basically took a generic elf model likely because of time constraints. I also think Fenris in game has lighter skin because he is a cave dweller who doesn't touch grass while in Kirkwall and only goes out when Hawke calls for an adventure (he is in hiding for the majority of the game after all - prove me wrong).

    One thing I dislike about Elves in DA:I is that they are so skinny.
    A bit more slender then humans is fine but it just looks almost retarded and out of proportion with the head size.
    Also, I hope that they add more hair styles and the ability to change up how muscular and fit you are along with body tattoos.
    Some things I kinda miss

    I have exactly 2 elves with white hair. One I was trying to get a more albino look who would probably have brown hair otherwise so I'm not sure she counts.

    So what would be a good head cannon/ explanation if your elven inquisator has a somewhat dark warm olive skin color?

    • @GhilDirthalen
      @GhilDirthalen  6 лет назад +3

      At least from what we have seen, geographical locations for elven skin colors match that of humans (Does that make sense? Haha- I mean that both Humans and elves from Rivain would have dark skin). As for a dark olive skin color- I would guess Antiva, similar to Zevran. Ferelden (Vaea) and Tevinter (Fenris) also have produced elves with darker skin tones. Hope that helps!

      If you think about it that does make sense! Because since the clan your elf is from is in the Free Marches, and the Free Marches is kinda sandwiched by all continents you mentioned,so it would be reasonable if there was some mixed skin tones and dark skin tones within the elven clan that your inquisator is from! Thanks for the help!

    What happens in the vallaslin scene in DAI if you romance Solas but don't have vallaslin on your character design...? I can't remember if it's even possible to have an elf without vallaslin though. Like, what happens????

    So you're saying me wanting to add a little spunk to my female lavelanna by giving her Violet eyes is natural? I just had head canon that my lavelanna was messing with a experimental spell an escaped apostate told her about and a side affect was a change in eye color. Doesn't make much sense, but at least I tried.

      I think the meta answer is that DA2 was rushed, so they werent really focusing on a guy you kill as soon as you meet him.

    Meh. Me and my brother are light skinned, we’re basically white, with my sister being darker than us. Than one of my cousins family it’s the opposite. First born, he’s dark and very Native American looking. His two younger brothers are basically white like me and my Bro. So I don’t see how it’s weird.

      It is still not lore breaking. (Especially since the free marches are ... free. Do what you want.) We just don't know the meaning of human tattoos while elven and dwarven tattoos are completely covered by lore.

    Someone please correct me but isn't it a bit weird that Hawke is 25 at the start of the game and still not married, only after 7 years or so if he/she romances someone? The setting of Dragon Age is quite Medieval, meaning people are at least married when they come to an age, like 16-18 or even younger.
    You might say that it's just a different culture but cultures are based on the surroundings. Death, illness, poor hygiene and diet, thugs, murderers, beasts, Blight... All this lead to a high probability to die young, which is why it would be important to have your child get married soon so that the family name won't die.
