  • "The outside of a horse is good for the inside of the man."
    Winston Churchill
    That adage is being played out every day at Stewart Conservation Camp next to Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City, Nevada.
    For the last ten years inmates have been training BLM wild Mustangs taken off the range to eventually be auctioned to the general public. What many do not know, in the past two years the program has been expanded to now include training Mustangs for the United Stated Border Patrol. For eight months KOLO 8's news crew was given uncommon access to inmates and horses for an in depth examination of how this program works and what changes it produces in not only the animal, but the man.

      @@wilsonnate5670 Hollywood is retired from Border Patrol and is in Alpine, CA. He's at Saddles in Service. I met and rode him yesterday. He's such a great horse! There are other retired BP horses there too. They are therapy horses. Well loved and pampered. They sent me this video so I could learn his history. Great work with him!

    Some creeps cross the desert loading horses with as much as 300 lbs of contraband then leaving the horses in the desert to die. These are some of the types of people the border patrol has to deal with.

      wingedwolf56176 I still believe it is ridiculous that wildhorses are caught due to BLM corruption and rancher greed and then put in holding pens for the rest of their lives if they aren't adopted. WildHorses are not overpopulated, they are underpopulated, their bloodlines are beginning to mix (incest) and that is a cause for concern, it causes a number of health concerns for those animals. How fair is it that a business created to manage the lands (even manage them FROM cattle) is being corrupted by ranchers due to them waving money in BLMs face? Yes Domestic horses are also being sold and for what? If the damned BLM didn't waste tax payer dollars on rounding up needlessly, then people could have more room for the domestic horses that need taking in. But no... people feel sorry for wildhorses so they adopt them and ignore the fact they have OTTBs and other great horses that need adoption or they will be slaughtered. This is pathetic and the BLM is pathetic. It is sad that an American icon is being wiped out and destroyed due to greed and corruption.

    I like seeing the border patrol get good horses but if you keep culling out the biggest and strongest you will soon ruin the wild heard. I notice you select dark horses with little to no chrome for the BP. That is wise they do not need high maintenance horses. This is what I would pick for myself :))

    Why in the world would you breed more wild horses? For one thing, these aren't technically wild horses. They're feral. Many, many, many years ago, these were domesticated Spanish horses. There are so many horses in the world already, and many of them are unwanted. There's no way that we as people, or the environment could handle breeding the crap out of mustangs. Do you know how much horses eat per day? 20 lbs. or more depending on the horse. Horses with access to food all day, eat all day. It's kind to give them a loving home. I find it extremely obnoxious when people try and put human emotions into an animal and boo hoo about how we're cruel for taking them out of their homes. Horses can be just as happy in a caring home, if not happier, than in the wild. They are extremely good at handling changes in life as long as they are given time.

    What was once wild and free is now tame and pinned, such a shame! With all the ex racehorses this just isn't necessary!

    • @watchgoose
      @watchgoose 6 лет назад +3

      wild and free isn't all it's cracked up to be. wild and free means: no hoof care, no vaccinations, no feed, no care for the sick and injured, slow death for those that are, usually by predators or starvation because that's "natural". Natural stinks.

      Trained, broke and cared for is far better than culling herds. The plains can’t always support large amounts of horses, especially with free range cattle.
      A horse generally likes to work, and enjoys running, and if you have a good relationship with your horse, they’re very happy.

  • @levalie8373

    Instead of taking the wild horses out of there home why don't they instead try and bred them more often? Wild horses are decreasing and with things like this they're bound to be lost sooner, there are perfectly good horses at shelters that could do with this training, and the whole "But these people are being able to redeem themselves" is a lie. They could redeem themselves by helping bred the wild horses and/or helping neglected horses who need help. People should understand that if we keep on taking these beautiful creatures away from there home Wild Horses will be no more.

    • @eecforeststewardship640
      @eecforeststewardship640 6 лет назад

      your information is way off. The "wild" horses are often once domestic animals released into the wild by owners who can no longer care of afford them. These animals are then rounded up by the thousands because they decimate the sensitive desert landscape and end up starving to death in winter. It costs American tax payers $50,000/day at each BLM facility to feed these animals. If they are not adopted, they spend the rest of their lives in holding pens.
