Actually the best drum instructor out here! Teaching drums without a musical bias. Just giving your students the abilities they need to express their own individual style. Amazing!
Mike, Thank you for putting these out each week lately. I've been spending all week working on what I've learned in the video, then restart once the new one comes out. I'm currently saving up to purchase a plan from MikesLessons because I just can't wait to get more of these! You've reinspired my playing after a lull and I haven't been this excited to get at it in years. You're the best!
Mike I had to come back and tell you about the dream that I had that night after watching this video...... in my dream, I sold or traded my Sonor Drums for a Gretsch kit like yours. Well, I know that I'm a new man inside and out since my open heart surgery almost 14 weeks ago that did save my life, and I love the sound of your kit and your playing...... well, I suppose that anything is possible, especially since I am a new man! Thanks and Blessings Mike!!!
That's amazing! There was a day I was playing and decided to try to add those 3 ghost notes after my down beat, 'cause I thought it would sound nice, and kept on practicing that. I since then almost always instinctively add that somewhere in the songs. Great to see the same being taught by you, legendary Johnston!
I found you late, but you have given this old drummer new life. Learning so much from you, and checking the archives as well. It has improved my playing so much people have noticed and have asked me and I tell them, Mike Johnston. I tell them I feel like you are talking to me and not at me when you teach and that's a huge difference when you are trying to learn and improve. Because of that, I don't see the bad wolf all that often. Thanks Mike!!
Gavin Harrison also does this a lot! On "Russia on Ice" live (Octane Twisted live album) he plays ELEVEN decaying ghost notes after the backbeat!! In case you wanna hear it, it's around the 4 minute mark right after the lyrics go "can't stop myself drinking". Enjoy!
Thanks for the reminder to allow yourself the time to get this stuff. I tend to get very impatient with myself and self-critical if I don't progress at the speed that I think I "should" be improving at.
Ah man, this technique took me a very long time to get it to the point that it flowed out me naturally. Take your time brother :) Mike J www.mikeslessons.com
I've watched this video for 25 seconds. I'm cracking up and loving it. And I am a one trick wedding band drummer. (Ginny and the Generations -not a lie) :)
So awesome, go to Mike's website and join. I joined two weeks ago and there are months if not years of practice ahead of me :) There are piles of instruction just like this. So worth it and one of the best instructors online. Sorry, just had to support him. The site is great!
Oops, I’m late to the party. I almost missed this one. If I had, I would have been out not only another great lesson, great teaching, great musicality, and great inspiration. I would have sadly missed the best humor in any of your recent videos, and that’s a damn high bar. Mike, you had me laughing from start to finish. Thanks, man. I needed that.
Liking it! Man another awesome lesson. What a great thing to practice! Textual and dynamically rich. And you did change metronome app! I didn't notice actually, thought it was still the classic old "visual metronome". I really got into a metronome called "impulse" lately.
Heeey muuuy buen video !! Me encantó!! Voy a aplicarlo a mi estudio. Oye una pregunta, como haces para hacer ese tipo de remates (minuto 4:49) saludos desde México
Wait a minute! What he speaks at 1:52 sounds like a triplet melody, doesn't it?🤣 Btw meme drum cover is out -m.ruclips.net/video/-r15r2k4D3c/видео.html 🤣🤣
Hey man, I’d love to sign up for your lessons but it requires for me to have a creditcard, which I don’t have. Is there another way to do this as a European? Cheers!
Mmm... Putting a little spicy cappuccino in my life. Also, I tend to think pillows sound better in my bed or on the sofa if the wife says so. Mike you may need to check the weather. I heard thunder!
Why are so many people afraid to play with resonance in their bass drum. That tuned wide open sounds like a bass drum, not a piece of press board mic'd. As well, I love that you are allowing the beater to come off the head when you play
@Trevian Harrell this is part of my teaching. Every one of my students must know the basics of tuning their drums before they get the thumbs up from me to perform. We then revisit ideas, talk about me ideas, and talk about their experiences and how they solved the problems around tuning as they progress. Has to be taught. Imagine any other instrument not knowing how to tune their instrument. Ludicrous.

God, that solo at 90bpm was so tastefully arranged. Wonderful stuff there!

Love that Gretsch Sound!
That snare gives me chills. Great sound.
Great to hear Joey since that is #0001 of my upcoming signature snare with Gretsch :)

Very cool triplet ghost notes. They really spice up the fills a lot, creating a whole melodic new dimension.

Great lesson! Thank you!!!
No stinking pillow in the bass. Sounds awesome. BTW, I have a 1967 chrome on brass Gretsch snare. BEAUTIFUL drum.
