Tee Jay I went back and listened to your speaker and music review of the HPM 100s. That N30 has a nice sounding built in Dac. It sounded great thru my stereo theater setup up. I had two pairs of these great speakers that I bought in Japan in 1981. One set of the HPM-100 (100 watts) and one set of the HPM-100 (200 watts). I had no idea they were the same thing (because of the gold ring in the port hole). They were both the same in price. Like a fool, I sold them after I got back to the states. They were my favorite speakers I ever owned! Live and learn, I guess.
Today, June 2022, I still have my 2 pairs of HPM-100s, the first pair i bought in Kadena AB Japan in 1976...the other pair, at Clark AB from another GI... The first pair traveled with me to George AFB in 1979, then to Clark in 1981, then with the second pair i bought there to Luke AFB Arizona in 1989...In 2001, they both traveled with me back to Clark AB, and finally in 2007, to my hometown in the Philippines to stay... The older pair lost its original woofers to water damage but i'll find the replacement someday...
Of course, is does not do much good to hear your demo on these wonderful speakers on my Personal Computer or iPhone . I have these speakers in very good condition that have not been used since I moved into our home 35-years ago. I remember when I first used the speakers on the floor in my apartment the entire floor was shaking! Speaker Stands helped. The sound is crisp and powerful! The hardest part of me selling them is they weigh about 60-pounds each! I’ll probably sell local to Lancaster, PA to avoid the shipping cost!
I bought a pair of HPM 60's when I was in my teens. Couldn't afford the HPM 100's. Would have loved to be able to buy a pair of HPM 150'S, but couldn't afford them and didn't have 3 or 4 friends available to help me move them. My HPM 60's were indeed built like a tank. Had the carbon fiber blended cone woofers. Really good speaker!
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 I actually got to listen to a pair of 150's It was at a Service Merchandise and I was about 12 or 13 years old. Every time they would hit a bass note it was almost like you were getting punched in the stomach! They were awesome. I never saw or heard the 200's, but I wish that I had. I'm sure they were some great sounding speakers also.
I'm running Polk Audio Monitor 10's. I replaced the caps and tweeters and I'm pretty happy with the sound. So I know first hand that you can get great sound from an older pair of speakers. Great video and I love the track you played, I'll be adding it to my Tidal playlist.
Eric Keese thanks man I've had to Polk monitor 10s also I've bought 8 new pairs of speakers this year 4 vintage pairs and these 4 way 4 driver design has been hard for me to find better under a grand going to try the uni5 towers next My klispch RP didn't even come close but for the money Pioneer fs52s really surprised me !
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 I also have a Modi 3 but I use it my office as a way to get better sound from my PC. In my main system, I have a Cambridge Audio CXN v2 network streamer. It has a Wolfson DAC built in. It's connected to a Yamaha a-s801 integrated amp, which has an ESS Saber DAC built in. I've tried both and right now, I'm using the Wolfson in my streamer. For my CD's, I'm using the Cambridge Audio CXC CD transport, going into the Yamaho via an Audioquest digital co-ax.
Eric Keese heck yeah I use to own a as501 and as801 before I started with utube but with in the next couple days I'll be showing how to simply upgrade the modi 3 to get even better sound and lower noise floor

Heck yeah !! I have the AS-1100 also ! The Pioneer hpm 100s are very good speakers that are actually easy to drive at 92.5 db efficancy but I had my crossovers upgraded cost me a total of 400.00US and then the HPM100s came alive ! I tell ya though the new Triangle Borea seris speakers have amazing synergy with the Yammy AS-1100 !! I actually sold my hpm 100s for 1k U.S. to a friend but i did buy another pair thats 100 percent stock and while they sound great having the crossover redone brought new life to them !
Tee-Jay The Stereo-Bargain-File thank you for your quick reply very much appreciated. I will check on triangle borea also. By the way what is the specific model on borea series? Thank you again
Yes !! keep them on O so you get more of a balanced sound , but theirs nothing wrong with adjusting them to the music you like or for bad reccordings, Your Pioneer Sx-880 is a wonderful match with the hpm 100s i have owned many of the sx-80 series !their Badass man !! Just like the HPM 100s !
Is it easy to clean the crossovers. Just wondering if I could do it myself with some deoxit ? I had a good buddy who had a pair of these back in high school (early 80's) I always wanted a pair so bought some about 5 or 6 years ago. Paid $400 but they could pass for new
Excellent review, thanks much for sharing ! I have also owned and enjoyed these speakers for many years now, have also had several other brands along the way, but I will never sell these. Mine are driven by both a Pioneer SX-1250, and a Carver 500-watt amp, so they have definitely been pushed pretty hard without any damage or distortion. I agree with you that they benefit from a strong amp which can provide a good amount of dynamic headroom. Many times, I have been listening to a piece of music at a 50 watt level, and when hitting a demanding section, the VU meters will jump right up to 3 or 400 watts, without one bit of complaint from the HPMs. They still rock the house after all these years !
Black Waterdogs I just finished up my newly bought vintage Onkyo Integra M-504 amp it's 165 watts at 8 ohms and 330 watts at 4 ohms with dynamic power at 400 watts it's a beast! At 50 pounds 8 large filter compasitors 3 large transformers dual mono design sounds very rich and warm this was What I call Onkyos golden age I'll have music review of it soon then an in-depth review. Have you upgraded your crossovers yet in you HPM? Makes an unbelievable difference thanks for the complement
No not at all , during this overview i mentioned that the speakers are 92.5db efficany which means their easy to drive 😆 And that Marantz 2270 will have no problem at all driving the PIONEERs HPM-100s
Hello, the problem was that my speakercables were 2,5 square mm, I am using now 0,75 square mm and it sounds very very nice, with a lot of power, especially with vinyl records from the 70s 👍🎼
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 I guess when they're not ready available it's more a nostalgia thing. I'm selling my nad 3020a due to a speaker terminal needing repairing and I've seen how much of a ball ache it would be. Tbh I love the amp but not having any speaker protection relay I wouldn't want to risk a blow out with my speakers. This is sadly a common thing with older amps. It's a love hate relationship 🙃
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 no nothing blew. One of the negative terminals popped out so now I can't clamp the speaker wire in. I bought a new terminal set but I was in the same boat as another chap (Jan Beta, does a RUclips vid)who noticed it didn't fit in as easy as one would expect. The whole circuit board needs taking out and a fair bit of soldering. Like I said even if it's fixed I'm still concerned with the amp not having any speaker protection components. 🙄

Bought a pair of these back in 76 I believe. They sounded great although I don't believe the bass was less that about 40Hz. These were literally the 2nd best speakers I ever owned.
Closer you put on front wall the better thae bass i got them dowb to atleast 30hz Shakes my while house 73 pounds each but they dont imagine very well and their far from the detail refinement compared to New age speakers above $1500. u.s my JBL studio 580s was a wake up call but still in their day they was basazz -

lu sly I've never heard them I read up on them only thing I could find that was different was a lil different crissover but drivers are the same weight is the same and the front airport has a plastic ring around it I upgraded to a 400.00 dollar crossovers
Other than a bit of difference in the crossover network, there is really no physical difference in the speakers themselves, same driver array in both 100 and 200 versions. My 100s have been pushed HARD with a 500 watt amp without self-destructing, so they can definitely take The Pepsi Challenge.
I got mine for $50 bucks from aquaintence down the street and paired them with my Pioneer SX-3900....there both in good condition and for fifty dollars I couldn't pass them up.
I was listening on theese and the hpm-900's and for my personal taste I whent with the HPM-900 It was a hard decision because they both sounded so damn good but I felt like the 900s had the edge on most music as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, kiss, queen and so forth. I love the old HPM speakers they are all so amazing. Ended up buying a pair of 100 a few years later wich I sold but I still kept the 900s
The Ampliefier plays a huge Roll in this old vintage speakers , But i tell ya I bought close to 20 speakers this year and for music only 1 set of speakers sounded better , but i completely upgraded the crossovers and this brought the hpm 100s to life ! I would like to have a set of the Pioneer exclusive 2401 or the smaller 2402 check those out , they also made an HPM 200 thats hard to find 😆
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 It sure does I found the Pioneer A9/spec1+spec2 and some other of the 70/80s era of highend pioneer work the best. The A9 was the one that brought the best sound to the HPM900 like the perfect match. But the crossovers are not to great in the hpm series. I also been on the lookout for the 200s I found a pair but they wanted so much for them and the subwoofers had been replaced. Once elements are replaced in HPM speakers to others than the original all of them sounds so off like there's something missing the magic is gone not even the mylar can help with the magic then :P
Hallo everyone. Can anybody tell me about combination betwen HPM 100 and Pioneee A9 (1981). I want to buy those speakers and I have this ump. Is it good match? Thanks
Yes the A9 came out in 1980 and its a beast of an integrated amp but as they age the output transitors need to be replaced to get the best sound quality out of them ,The HPM-100s are easy to drive for their size, but they also need overhauled crossovers or crossovers replaced to sound amazing again but a decent newer 2 channel reciever or integrated amp will sound great on them after upgrading crossovers , The HPM 100s are not a peaky speaker to match ampliefiers with at all , great speakers that will knock pictures off the wall !!
I just sold my Yamaha NS 690 mk III because i had a problem with bass at low frequences. The sound was really warm but the bass annoyed me. I try to find HPM 100

@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 yes. 100s have tubes. The real only diff. on the 200w is the silver sticker!! Even funnier. The hundreds were always 200 but thery were being conservative in the beginning. 14 ft apart in the corners, on 1 ft. stands and they are mind blowing! Had them since '77
Hehe ,they may not be the best sounding but you turn it up and they will back you out the door and they sound better if you keep them separated, hehe ,they were rockers speakers that you could afford, 300 apiece, 200wat, not sure if that makes any difference but that was the price back then

They building to a budget in the 70s Japanese gear was very cheap for Americans because $1 dollar equalled 350yen then 80s came along and Japan had to pay their labors more espically with the unions now $1 dollar equals 90 yens !! So yeah we got amazing deals in the 70s Japanese gear but labors made hardly nothing ! Remb the quality loss in the 80s ? That's the reason
I got a set by dumb luck not knowing if their prestige at first. We hooked them up for a listening back system in our recording studio and I've never heard any thing was good as these sound. No joke about the weight though, when we put them up on stands we almost dropped them twice from you on ladders. I thought these better be worth it. Words can't describe the feeling I got hearing these cut loose the first time. And I'm not some noob, we have a 10,000 klipsch system that is very good but not quite like these. No 🐂 💩!!!
Its dam good for the price you can get them for i sold my pair with the crossover being redone missed them so bad i bought another set with factory crossover and i tell ya they sound good but with crossovers being refurbished with new caps and resitors oh my !! Yeah kickass speakers!
Sorry. The reality is that the frequency response on these is a hot mess. The woofer runs all the way up to 3,000 hz with massive ringing and midrange breakup. The midrange runs up WAY too high and cancels out the tweeter output at many frequencies, depending on where you are sitting. The cone tweeter beams straight ahead, as cone tweeters do, which is why Nobody has used them for decades. Combine that with cheap cabinets that resonate badly, and the net is terribly colored and distorted sound. Nostalgic, yes. Surrounded by hype, yes. A good speaker? Not so much.
@FFL-vg9ro why do you think we use dsp for ??? And cabneit is 73 pounds each I can shake my while house with these speakers hell an old 80s eq you can dial these speakers they way you like it ' measurements only tell you how accurate a speaker is not how it sounds
🎤 were horrible ! And once i dampened the room the sound g Became much smoother but these are front ported So that helped with the Harsh room, but some people like that Harshness in their sound, they say it sounds more life like 😆

I found a pair in 10/10 condition (mint) for ~1150USD. Is that an OK price?
That depends on you i would hope the crossovers have been redone they sre awesome speakers !
Yeah took me ten years to find another set in great shape
Today, June 2022, I still have my 2 pairs of HPM-100s, the first pair i bought in Kadena AB Japan in 1976...the other pair, at Clark AB from another GI... The first pair traveled with me to George AFB in 1979, then to Clark in 1981, then with the second pair i bought there to Luke AFB Arizona in 1989...In 2001, they both traveled with me back to Clark AB, and finally in 2007, to my hometown in the Philippines to stay... The older pair lost its original woofers to water damage but i'll find the replacement someday...
I’ve owned mine since 78’. I still use them daily . Unfortunately had to replace both woofers over time. I’m looking for original woofers.
I just sold my pair for $350 !!
Yeah moving the 100s are not fun 😆
But yeah HPM-150s would be nice !
I still have my Hpm 60 and they sound also great.
@a090006 hell yeah !! Keep Rocking!
Hi !!! Spotted a PIONEER DVD-player on your rack. By the way, which model is it ?!? Best regards from Brazil !!!
Eric Keese what kind of D.A.C are you using I'm about to do a review on how to upgrade a modi3 dac that makes a huge sound difference

You are correct !! In my nearfield room the bass was to strong so i put them up in the air

Tee-jay very good review i have question i have a yamaha a s1100 amplifier do you think this speaker is good match? Thanks
Heck yeah !! I have the AS-1100 also ! The Pioneer hpm 100s are very good speakers that are actually easy to drive at 92.5 db efficancy but I had my crossovers upgraded cost me a total of 400.00US and then the HPM100s came alive ! Amazing!
Running mine through a pioneer sx-880. Do you have a recommended setting for the mids and highs on the speakers?
Yes !! keep them on O so you get more of a balanced sound , but theirs nothing wrong with adjusting them to the music you like or for bad reccordings, Your Pioneer Sx-880 is a wonderful match with the hpm 100s i have owned many of the sx-80 series !their Badass man !! Just like the HPM 100s !
How do you thoroughly clean the crossovers? You have a video on that?
No video but get you some Q-tips and cleaner i use is crc1500
@Jingle Nuts thats what the crc1500 is Jingle 😆
@Jingle Nuts hey jingle you have the Yamaha as3000?
Is it easy to clean the crossovers. Just wondering if I could do it myself with some deoxit ? I had a good buddy who had a pair of these back in high school (early 80's) I always wanted a pair so bought some about 5 or 6 years ago. Paid $400 but they could pass for new
Just use some compressed air on crossovers and a lil bit deoxit on the potentiometers
I usually just upgrade the crossovers with better parts.
D5 on switches Fader on pots and faders.
Makes an unbelievable difference thanks for the complement
and I love the sx---80 series !!
Hi, is the Marantz 2270 (70 watts 8 Ohm) too weak to handle the Pioneer HPM100 (100Watts version)? I have the feeling... Thanks
No not at all , during this overview i mentioned that the speakers are 92.5db efficany which means their easy to drive 😆 And that Marantz 2270 will have no problem at all driving the PIONEERs HPM-100s
That Marantz really loads like 140 wpc , will fit very nice with this speakers

@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 I guess when they're not ready available it's more a nostalgia thing. I'm selling my nad 3020a due to a speaker terminal needing repairing and I've seen how much of a ball ache it would be. Tbh I love the amp but not having any speaker protection relay I wouldn't want to risk a blow out with my speakers. This is sadly a common thing with older amps. It's a love hate relationship 🙃
@@CM-dw3gh is it hard to fix ? You love the amp shouldn't be ro exspensive to fix ? Did something burn up ?
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 no nothing blew. One of the negative terminals popped out so now I can't clamp the speaker wire in. I bought a new terminal set but I was in the same boat as another chap (Jan Beta, does a RUclips vid)who noticed it didn't fit in as easy as one would expect. The whole circuit board needs taking out and a fair bit of soldering. Like I said even if it's fixed I'm still concerned with the amp not having any speaker protection components. 🙄

Tee-Jay The Stereo-Bargin-File thank you. So, you have the 50 watt version?
lu sly their the 100 watt version
Other than a bit of difference in the crossover network, there is really no physical difference in the speakers themselves, same driver array in both 100 and 200 versions. My 100s have been pushed HARD with a 500 watt amp without self-destructing, so they can definitely take The Pepsi Challenge.

Beauties
