  • Dandelions are one of the most healing, rejuvenating, and respected herbs in the world. Come with me on a video journey to learn to use them to enhance your health and beauty. I show you when to harvest, how to pick them, what nutrients they have, how that is beneficial, and how to prepare the root for dandelion tea or roast it for "coffee". Dandelion is also used in some great products you can use easily every day if you don't live near an area where you can harvest clean, pesticide free dandelions or just don't have time and energy.
The Latin name for dandelion is Taraxacum officinale and they grow wild in all kinds of places. They are a hardy plant that often pops up in sidewalk cracks and anywhere they can find a spare bit of dirt. They concentrate nutrients from the soil and that benefits you when you eat, drink, and apply them to your skin.
Traditional Medicinals was kind enough to provide me a sample of their tea to try. I was not paid for my opinion, and their tea is quite tasty. You can purchase it at your local health food or supplement store and at their website: traditionalmedicinals.com/prod...
They sent me the Dandelion Leaf and Root tea which is unroasted. It has a very nice, mild flavor and is incredibly easy to make and drink. For the most vitamins the unroasted variety is best as heat can damage some phytonutrients.

I'm a greek. Dandelion is well known since ancient times. We make salad out of leaves. Harvest before bloom is less bitter, boil in lots of water, strain. Add salt, lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil to taste. Enjoy

i was going to mention the same thing, Sofia, i noticed they were picking the greens after the bloom when it's bitter ~ the greens are a lot tastier if you pick before the bloom ~ one of my neighbors from Syria taught me when i was very young.

No one said anything about toxins, so you conclude it sounds like dandelion has some toxin to it? So, if no one mentions rain, you conclude it sounds like rain is coming? What?

It's better to harvest the root in fall, when the greenery has mostly died back, and the nutrition in the leaves have gone back into the root.

I was wondering that. I just went out yesterday before we mowed and harvested some. They weren’t very big and yes I did notice the leaves didn’t look that great. 😁

@Sage Shellum Yes, that's what I said 6 years ago. I'll put it anther way:
Dandelions are perennials that die back in the winter, though the plant's roots live on underground. In the early fall, nutrients are transferred from the leaves to the roots, and that is why it's best to harvest the roots in Fall.

I think it's mostly the concept that a "weed" be definition is "A plant that is not where it is supposed to be" and dandelions spread like crazy throughout yards, so they became so much of an uncontrollable annoyance that people forgot how helpful they are as a food source.

It's not a conspiracy or anything though lol. People are just more vain and less prone to herbal medicines in the West (on the whole). Europeans are all about the dandelions. My (greek) grandmother would be out picking them all the time. Italians are also big on it, and I am sure many more. It's funny because I hated them as a kid when my grandfather would make them, boiled, then with salt, pepper, lemon and olive oil. I found them so bitter and had to be bribed and forced to eat them and drink the juice. Now as an adult, my grandfather passed, I am picking dandelions from my yard to boil and eat lol. The cycle continues.

The way I enjoy eating dandelion is I put a whole plant in my blender with a pint of water. I blend until very fine. I strain the fluid out for a tea and the remaining green pulp I use to make a potato salad with. I find I can eat much more dandelion this way. Also, since no heat is used I do not destroy the vitamins and potency of the dandelion.

I like to chop the dandelion greens into bite size pieces with a knife....and add them into my salad (along with some basil, mint, garlic chives, a few sprigs of oregano, and some nasturtium leaves: all of which are in my summer garden each year.) I enjoy the taste of the dandelion greens much better when mixed with other things....rather than by themselves. Great with a basil vinaigrette salad dressing.
I also chop up some dandelion greens and freeze them to use in soups through the winter.
Dandelion greens are good for dogs as well.....I use two to three pinches of the frozen greens in their food all year round....and alternate them with a number of other vegetables. It's like a vitamin/mineral supplement for dogs....my dogs stay healthy, happy, and active all their lives, and live to a ripe old age :-)

This year I’ve been picking the flowers, let them sit in vinegar for 5 minutes, then rinse them, I boil water, put the clean flowers in a large mason jar, pour the hot water after sitting for 5 mins, add sum spearmint that I grow, and add a couple tablespoons of monk fruit sweetener, let it sit for 30 mins, then drain it into a bowl and use the tea. Very refreshing. I luv it. I hav a fatty liver and hope this will help.

Thank you for this! My husband and I bought our house on an acre of land, and while I was out getting my first spring picking of mint I noticed the dandelions were abundant in our yard. We have the red clay, so the dandelions are smaller, and the roots more compact. Our land doesn't have any herbicides, and I wasn't sure if they needed to be processed beyond washing/cutting/drying. I'm so happy I can finally put dried dandelion roots in my cabinets! Thank you for this informative video!

the weeds ,which dont even know why we call them weeds ,there plants ,are everywhere and they are super nutritious.
I know of a lady who lived in a teepee for 2 1/2 yrs eating nothing but forage plants. she's super healthy and slim.
she wrote a few books on the subject. i cant believe it took me this long to discover what was under my nose all along.

I eat a lot of dandelions and other weeds. They can be real food for regular people! I use them in great weed salads that would be worth paying $20 at a restaurant. I cook with them, too. I go for the big, lush leaves in the shade or tall grass, and not the scrawny ones out in the hot sun or other stressed conditions. Dandelions are great!

Haha!!! Right you are!!! I get some looks from neighbors, and they are aware I harvest some dandelion leaves each day for my evening salad.......they they go to the store and BUY an over-priced anemic looking bagged salad mix without nearly the amount of nutrition of the dandelion greens. My Irish ancestors survived (in part) by eating dandelion greens.....as did my grandparents who survived the Great Depression as well (and who raised me). I've been eating them for ages. Must be something good in them.....I'm nearly in my sixties now....and am told I look like I'm in my 30's/40's. Darned if I can find any wrinkles.....but I'm OK about that!!! ;-)

I like to marinate dandelion greens in organic lemon juice, fresh is best, and a little sea salt. I first cut them into small pieces, then massage the juice and salt in. Let them sit for 20 minutes or so. Add to other mixed greens and romaine lettuce with some other veggies for a yummy salad. Add fresh blueberries and/or red grapes--you won't even need a dressing!

I was raised by grandparents from the Great Depression/WWII...have eaten dandelion greens every summer....and I even pick them and freeze them to use in soups through the winter. To the Irish immigrants, and later the Depression era people: dandelion greens made a great contribution to surviving healthfully.

+Javier Virgen yea, that's what they are famous for. In the old days in the Italian alps a lot of people used to pick all kinds of stuff including dandelions, chestnuts, pine cones (pine nuts), mushrooms and so on, all organic all, all good for you !! The doctor used to tell my parents to feed us all natural stuff and I remember people in their 80's and 90's in my town still walking around good, never seen anyone in a wheel chair !! maybe a walking stick that's about all. Yea the good old non Monsanto days !! No wonder we are all sick and 60 year old need knee replacement and gallbladders out and so on. BTW my father at 87 just had his gallbladder out, still walks around better than I do my my health problems and y mom is still healthy at 78 !! Dad always attributed his health to eating good organic food in Italy till 1972 and eating stuff from his garden and lean meats and wine !! There you go that's the ticket don't you think ?

Dandelions are magnificent, but please do not confuse them with false dandelion ( Hypochaeris radicata) also known as flat weed or cat's ears. It is easy to tell the difference although the flowers and leaf shape are similar. Leaves - Cat's ears have a profuse covering of small hairs on the leaves that are easily detected by touch, while dandelion leaves are smooth and tender and are much thinner. Flower - Cat's ears may have a flowering stem that branches into 2 or more yellow flowers and their stem cross-section is dense and full when the flower is picked. Dandelions never branch. They only bear a single flower per stem and the stem is distinctly hollow when the flower is picked and has milky sap. Dandelion flowers are also delightful in salads.

I remember exclaiming excitedly to my aunt (as a typical 5 or 6 y.o. would) how beautiful her huge yard was when seeing it covered in those bright yellow flowers! I quickly learned then that they were weeds and certainly not desirable. hmmm ... it seems I was "well schooled", because when I was old enough to mow her lawn, part of the process included an annual dragging of the weed killing wax like bar. Chemical company propaganda did it's job on my aunt's generation and then to subsequent generations via osmosis. Subtle and effective :(
It's time to once more consider the inside and outside beauty of these plants.

You can eat the root raw! That way you will have all the nutrients instead of killing them by putting them in an oven and drying them.
You can juice the leaves with other greens, thereby getting all the nutrients. Juice them with an apple for a nice flavor!

A wonderful suggestion. :) Some people just like to replace their coffee with the roasted root if coffee is too acidic or stimulating for them. A lot of that is just flavor based, but you are correct that the nutrient profile is better when the root is raw and untoasted.
