I had a neighbour who was a very nice but extremely quiet and guarded lady. One morning, I noticed she was weeding my yard. I went to speak with her and thanked her but she didn't need to do it. She said, "I eat the dandelion greens". She asked if I used any pesticide and I said no. I found out later from her daughter that she was a holocaust survivor and how much she had suffered. My heart ached. Her daughter said, they used to make wine or drinks from the dandelion flowers. It is amazing how humans can adapt to a very cruel life. Clara's video reminded me of the beautiful soul, I had the blessing of knowing.

"Sometimes the Lord thinks of you, and drops food from heaven." Reminds me of a story my mom told me about her mother during the Great Depression. Like everyone else, my grandma's family was poor, and didn't have much to eat. She and her siblings were walking along the road when a truck hauling vegetables was driving by. A big bag of onions fell off the truck, and the truck didn't stop to retrieve it. So she and her siblings picked it up and hauled it home. For the next week, they ate meals made of onion. When she was older, one of her favorite things to eat was buttered white bread with a thick slice of Limburger and a slab of onion. For everyone else, it was the breath slayer... for her it had been a lifesaver.

As someone who's been eating dandelion salads for as long as I can remember this was a interesting watch! I thought we were the only ones that ate them. Theres one important thing that was left out: Only eat these things in the early spring, after they start blooming or get lots of sun the leaves get super bitter and taste horrible. Also we chop them up fairly fine so it's more like a slaw, still use the oil salt and lemon juice but we sometimes add fresh plain crumbled tofu and or veganise to mellow out the flavour a bit. The ratios of lemon and salt are fine tuned to get the yummiest results

We wanted an authentic Depression recipe put in a simple manner, with the ingredients listed in the description, at least. This video could have been twice as short if it was done by someone with experience or education in the media industry.

Hardly anyone eats that anymore but I still like that and have it . my wife after 40 years still makes it , even are kids like it . Don't forget people , it's called survival . There might be a day when we all half to do this for real . my mom said she use too save avacodo seeds and dry them out and make flour for baking . We as people got spoiled and forgot how to live .

My mother also used wild onions in soups. They have a delicious & pungent flavor. I'm always excited in the spring when they pop up in the grass. I love adding them to bone broth.
I made a dandelion lasagna once which tasted just like spinach lasangna. It was good, but mostly because lasagna is always good.
I need to experiment with the greens, flowers & roots.

Eating that for long periods of time would be incredibly damaging to you. Please dont eat hard stone fruit pits.

that is wrong you were brainwashed into thinking plants are good for you ALL junk foods are plant based the only difference is the fibre was removed to make it more palatable... I ate a whole food plant based diet(NO junk food or added sugar) and it made me obese i gained 26 pounds ( 20 pounds in 2 weeks and peaked at 26 pounds a month 1/2 later) i quit at the 2 week mark Size 36 jeans
I mean plants have 52 names for sugar ...
Humans can not Physically Digest plants
it's one of the reasons why I switched to a HIGH fat/meat animal based diet.. I actually lost weight and gained 10 pounds of muscle mass in 8 months from 208 to 192
Size 33 jeans Pre whole food plant based diet(NO junk food or added sugar) I weighted 182 at size 33 jeans so i gained 10 pounds of muscle mass in 8 months...
Meat is the natural human diet You can afford meat Get liver if you don't have any money you can buy like 2 pounds of it for 3$ or 4$ , liver has the highest density nutritional value for humans... so you get the best bang for your buck

We grew up eating greens, dandelions included. We ate it from root to blossom. The greens in salads or cooked like spinach with a little lemon and olive oil. The blossoms were used to make jelly, tea, deep fried or in soups. The root was also for tea (stomach issues) and in stews. The entire plant is useful and healthy. We also ate things like lamb quarters, fiddle fern heads, wild grapes...these are the kinds of knowledge that is increasingly becoming lost. I thank my parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc for what they passed on to us.

Growing up in the pacific northwest, I learned early on the berries and plants that were good to munch on. Me and my friends would spend the whole day in the forest playing, when we got hungry we'd eat fiddle fern tops, various wild berries, etc. My favorite was sheep sorrel, it has a delightfully lemony taste to it.

First greens after a long winter and the depression. I know you are on the other side now Clara. Whispering in our ears your frugal advice and wisdom. Much of the food I grew up on felt depression frugality inspired. Tomato soup over mashed potatoes, canned peas and a little meat. Wish we also had the dandelion greens! Dandelion greens, mustard greens and Rapini are the most underrated greens yet the most nutritious. Each have their own flavor, with the Dandilons being the more tart of the three in taste. They are rich in antioxidants with great cleansing properties for your liver and if you have digestive problems. When I was a little girl I would go with my mother often to pick them in random fields, even asking Farmers if we could pick them in their fields as well. Very much like Clara brandishing her 🔪. It was funny the farmers thought we were odd folk asking to pick their weeds lol.
Dandelions are best picked in the spring before the flowers get established, when they are their most tender.
My mother washed them three times, out in the backyard with the garden hose in a big bucket, same as Clara😊 If she was able to find a good field on our car rides and gathered enough, she would blanch them and then freeze baggies of them for the winter, bringing them out and boiling them well before serving with the dressing.
They are awesome boiled like 20 minutes or until tender. Drain them well and then add olive oil salt and lemon. Delicious!!!

My parents grew up during WWII in Greece and had to learn to be very frugal as they were very poor. When I was a young girl in the 70's in Canada, we would take a Sunday drive just outside the city where there were farmlands. When my Dad spotted a good weed patch he'd get out the car and knock on the owners door to ask if he could pick some weeds. They'd always look at him strangely but they would allow us to pick. We'd come home with bags of greens and weeds which included dandelions etc. My mom would wash, boil them and we'd slather on some olive oil, lemon and salt. Delicious, especially with some bread for dipping in the oil.

Seeing Clara pick the dandelion leaves takes me back when I was a little girl and I would go gathering dandelions with my nonna, those were some of my favourite times with her. I am so gals to have seen this video, who ever posted it, thank you, you have brought back some truly wonderful memories.

Grandma Clara, thanks for this great video! I am from Bosnia and my mom made dandelion salad when I was a kid during the war. I saw a couple of your videos and that's the same type of food and the same misery from the Great Depression that's haunting me for 23 years now, including Haglund's deformity and chronic lichen planus.
After the war, we all thought it would get better, and it did - for about 5 years, and then the Recession struck and now I'm facing the same misery, the one I already survived. I can't afford the flat, college, food, but somehow I manage to survive (both me and my dog), with obvious damage to my mental health and no money to go to the psychologist.
If anyone else is experiencing such atrocities, I recommend potatoes, cabbage, beans, peas, eggs for energy and dandelion, garlic, beet to keep your immune system working - because visiting doctor is the last thing you need when you can't even afford enough food. And having one meal per day is ok - you won't die or get sick if it's healthy food. Greetings from Bosnia!

I love Clara so much. She reminds me of my Granny whom I cherished. She never wasted anything. If she had leftover mashed potatoes we knew we were getting potato pancakes the next day. Oh, how I looked forward to that. Just put an egg and some flour into the leftover mashed potatoes and when they are at a pancake batter consistency fry them in hot oil. Yummo!

My dad grew up in the depression. He always picked dandelion in our garden and made salad out of it. My siblings and I were always ashamed that he did that and we only eat salad from the grocery store.
In the mean time I love dandelion salad! It's very healthy and it's my favorite salad now! 🥗

Thank you to Clara whoever's idea it was to start filming this. My parents both grew up during the depression. They would both talk about and occasionally fix meals from back then (including dandelion salad) but left behind very few recipes after they died. Yeah, I could Google them and probably get something close but to hear and see it come from the real deal is priceless. This channel is a godsend to me.

This might sounded sweet, but it is actually dumb. We, as humans have plenty of food as other animals do. God did not say to us to make mixtures of food, cook, etc to survive. We are doing this because of CONTROL. Food is above everything for survival, and we will never be free as long as we are clueless about what our natural food is. For those who still don't have a clue, our natural food is FRUITS.

My Ma makes an arugula salad almost exactly like this, so I sent her the video to watch. A few days ago I went to visit and there was a jar of dandelions in water in her kitchen, she had shown the video to my 8 year old nephew and he went out in the yard and picked them all for her to make a salad for dinner ❤
Clara lives on because of these videos ❤
