I really enjoyed this. I'm a local dresser; the touring shows come to my town and I'm hired for the run of a show to do all the dressing responsibilities described in the video. Local dressers only get an hour and a half advance notice of what they need to do during the show. We don't get to practice our track - even the quick changes. We really count on the actors to walk us through the changes. My daughter, who was a dresser for My Fair Lady with me last year, watched a moment of this video over my shoulder and commented about how much space and light they have compared to what we work with. It is a challenging job, but it is the most fun I've ever had!
I appreciated how this video showed the intense jobs of dressers on broadway. About how it's very important to have a relationship with the actor, and it's very impressive how the quick changes are done in such a short amount of time. This shows all the different aspects and details of being a dresser, how you need to be prepared if something rips or comes off. I love how they mentioned about how what the character is wearing is a big aspect, it essentially brings the character to life.
@@moonlitdaisies3928 11-13 seconds for a full costume! I can alter or fix clothes or maybe fix jewelry. I don't think I'll have the patience to do quick change. God bless!
As someone who is working on a high school production as a dresser I know I couldn't get any of my changes done that quick! It's amazing what professionals can do!
@@margotbunny6780You are right! I think they do that job full time and they had years and years of practice. I think it all comes down to how organized and efficient the Dresser is. God bless!
@@moonlitdaisies3928 Yup. Same here, I once had to get a girl into a full French Revolution gown and wig in twenty seconds flat, the year before get a girl from a dress to tomboy jeans, leather jacket, and sneakers, stuff her hair in a hat (she had a LOT of hair) and smudge enough greasepaint on her face to look like a beard in around twenty again. Whew those were fun though lol
I love the focus on relationships between the dressers and actors. It's so sweet and important to have that kind of bond with someone you work with so closely, even in totally different aspects of theatre.
I like the emphasis on what the actor is wearing makes the character and helps them come to life. The fact that the costume is looked at as regular clothes that the actor had to be comfortable in is important. I also really appreciate how organized everything is and how hard everyone works.
I was amazed in how many people it takes just to dress the actors, theres so many. Also the modifications they do to the clothes in order to do quick changes is very smart. Never knew that all sectors of theatre required a large amount of attention and organization.
Watching this video took me back to my theatre days as the head of the hair , wig and make up Department in Toronto.. Miss working in theatre. I now work in film where my skills are in great demand. The hardest part of working in theatre is missing out on children’s extra curricular activities and not having weekends to spend with family as you only get Sunday evenings and mondays off.great video, thanks for sharing, and thank you for your passion and hard work.👏👏👏👏🙏🏻❤️❤️
I appreciate how the video highlights the relationship between the actors and the dressers. You should be able to feel comfortable around the person who is dressing you because you spend a lot of time with them during the production process.
At 23:53-25:40 I really enjoyed how during quick change, although under stress, keep the environment as lighthearted and fun as possible and how they are always prepared if a something bad happened with the wardrobe and they are always prepared to fix something if a piece gets torn during quick change.
I will have so much more appreciation for Wardrobe crew... wow I did not know it was this detail driven and that every little thing, down to one thread was taking seriously, that so cool.
It's so amazing to see how much goes into a costume outside of its design. Dressers really do keep the show from feeling like a play and turn it into an experience, into reality. I'm always impressed by how well they keep their cool.
I love how there are so many different elements to wardrobe and how everyone is involved. I also enjoy how the swing dresser is so involved and how she organizes everything I also really enjoy how everyone has a rile and there are so many stages to wardrobe
I really enjoyed this video! I'm a college student majoring in theatre and although, my main concentration is performance, I really do enjoy costumes! A couple months ago I was given the opportunity to be the dresser for my school's production of Sideshow and I loved it. I was assigned to two lead roles and one featured role and although I was up and moving quite a bit, I loved the thrill of helping them with their quick changes and such. Something that I found very intriguing while watching this video was when it was said that "the dresser and actor should form a trust and common liking of each other". This comment sparked my attention because I really do believe in that. I feel that being apart of a show can be very stressful at times for all the people that are involved with it so the last thing you need is to feel bad vibes with the person you are with for basically the whole show.
I loved watching this and getting to learn more about wardrobe and theatre especially a lot more advanced. I learned so many things that may actually come in handy! I’m in high school and I’m starting my junior year very soon and now I think I can recommend some tips to our wardrobe team! This was super useful and fun to watch! 😊❤️
I love these videos so much! They are just fascinating. I guess I will no longer wonder why Broadway tickets are so expensive! It obviously takes a village, as they say!
Thank you for this video! This is so informative. I never knew what costumes entailed, and this is inspiring for someone studying theatre. Fantastic job!
This is awesome! I love the costuming part of musicals and shows! Even the smallest things mean a lot and had thought towards it. Even just a necklace had lots of thought towards it. This was very fun to watch! Thanks for the video!
Dressers are the unsung heroes of broadway. Sometimes I think they must work even harder than the actors because they have to be there before the actors arrive to check that the costumes are ready and they have to be here after the actors leave to check if a stitch or button came lose during the show.
Is there any classes or courses that expand upon this job? I am in love with this, but I have little experience about fabrics and such, but I would love learn anything anyone would want to teach me. Please, I would pay for it if I can. Also, there are very few things that make my heart soar, than seeing an actor or actress in full costume in the special world of backstage.
It’s so weird watching this and seeing old acquaintances. Also I don’t know why I watched this as dressing is my full time job. It’s like I never left work 😵
Sometimes the little things like the jewelry can make a big difference in the costumes.they make a big difference on the dress or outfit the actor / actress is wearing overall i really enjoyed this video/piece
Dressers are so important. I mean they are basically the only people you really interact with while being yourself and not the character you play for most of the show. Sure you have your cast but dressers support you in every way and only make your performance better.
Stunning. I saw it and loved every second of it. It’s funny because I did not like the movie. The movie was very drab in every regard. An entirely brown house. Dark colors. Tons of neutrals. This production did the opposite of that and I LOVED it.

My new favorite addition of Working in the Theatre
11-13 seconds for a quick change! That is so fast! So, Dressers are like the PIT STOP CREW of Actors.
I dont work as a dresser just done some high school stuff but we've done a few qucik changes that fast. its so hard.

At 62 years old I can honestly say this was my dream career. I just love the behind the scenes aspect of theater but alas I only did stage work.
Never too late ❤

I love the attention to detail that the costume people put into the costumes and how the actors look in them
An assistant designer has an amazing job they decide every little piece they keep it planned like months ago.

The thought that is put into the strategies of quick changes is amazing. 11-13 seconds is so short! The strategies you presented were very smart.
I love that being personable is so important to the job. It definitely makes things go so much better and smooth. Thank you for sharing!

I find it so fascinating how they do quick changes.
I never realized how many people are backstage solely for costumes. Thank you so much for this video and an insight into this production.
I have always wondered how actors changed so quickly. I'm happy that someone finally explained it!

I appreciate how much work they put into the costumes
I really appreciate all of the effort that goes into the wardrobe.
We appreciate y'all wardrobe workers!
I’m going for a job interview as a dresser tomorrow! So excited!
This was an amazing show of how much goes on behind the scenes and how much work goes into these costumes, its astounding!
Thank you for doing all that stuff to make shows so much better!
It’s amazing to see everyone’s part in making such a glamorous show!
So impressed with the people who do this!
It was cool learning about quick changes happen and how it has to be set up so it's ready and just perfect.
This is absolutely fascinating!
Watching all the work that goes on behind these dress changes is so cool and as an actress, I respect all of your hard work so much!
I didn't know about the dressers, so that is something I learned, I also see it is very important in some plays.
This video is a great peak into the backstage world of costumes, thank you!
Yes, that was Olenna Tyrell(Diana Rigg) at 0:44 as the Duchess of Transylvania in My Fair Lady. Had to check and can confirm :D
Awesome deep dive into how the wardrobe is created and used effectively through the show. It adds so much and is very interesting.
26:37 "Oh so loverly sitting absol-bloomin-lutely still." -----"Have a banana." LOL
Very cool. Makes me miss my theatre days!!!
