    When I worked at Blizzard EU before the decimation of 2018, I remember a mantra being spread from J. Allan Brack in the various company wide communications that "Blizzard was to become the Blizzard of mobile gaming!" and it sounded like this was to become the new main priority of the company at the time. Back then we thought it meant to bring some balance to mobile gaming with some good games in the sea of gacha games, but it seems now they meant doubling down on the industry practices of predatory monitization in mobile gaming.

    • @DELZOR
      @DELZOR 2 года назад +11

      The problem is that mobile gaming is unimaginable larger than any other gaming medium. For every commenter here there are a thousand people not giving a single fuck or simply not even conceptualizing what pay to win is in any form. They just have a phone that has a game where you can spend 10$ dollars on whatever.
      This is why "respectable" developers simply don't care about your opinion. You don't matter since the average asian mobileman will outpay you.

Google and Apple can infact double down on these guys, like they literally have to say "When you publish your app on our store, you cannot bring in gambling mechanics" or something like that, but since they tax all purchases, they would never do that. The Epic vs Google and Apple case now wants them to allow sideloading/external purchases which would lower Gapple's income and present even greater opportunities for these gachas, worse yet, gapple may become more resilient from ever removing gambling.
      I support Epic's take on this but we need gov.s to step in this mess before it becomes the norm and there are more approvers to these predatory acts than opposers.

      Now you have so many games developers going for that steady stream of income to found other projects, but the other projects just becomes just as uninspired.
      My best guess is, that it's hard for a developer company to switch between making a good game and thinking about optimal ways to abuse players outside the game.

Not just in Belgium and the Netherlands, but worldwide. Every government should form a "ministry of p2w" and make this manipulative, predatory dogshit so unprofitable for companies that they stop doing it. Let's go back to selling cosmetics and vanity items, and stop this plague that makes all games worse by default and traps people into burning their money for absolutely nothing in return.

    The best way to actually "vote with your wallet" is to help family and friends who do have gambling addictions and who are whaling games to stop. Those people's "wallets" are worth a hundred times more than your average player's wallets as far as Blizzard is considered. Help them to find other hobbies, get therapy for any mental distress they may be in, and hopefully eventually, get them to a point where they can delete the game. Sunk cost fallacy is real, so that last step is not likely to be feasible for most whales. However, one can at least disrupt an actual relevant portion of these p2w game's revenue streams while helping people who genuinely need help.

    Greed isn't an evolved trait, it's a learned trait. If anything ancient humans were more communal and sharing than we are. There's fossils of ancient humans who lived relatively long lives with major disabilities that would have made them unable to care for themselves. They lived so long because others took care of them.
    There's a find of a 20 year old girl, who had severely atrophied bones likely due to an illness in her childhood. She lived to 20 and one of the other things they noticed was that her teeth had several cavities, likely from eating too many sweets. Because she was cared for and her family were trying to cheer her up with sweets. She wasn't abandoned to the wolves.

The goal of adverting is to convince you to use/buy their product. Those 8 pixels are probably already buying the product. So the actual goal is to get the remaining 65,000 pixels to buy the product.

    Everyone agreed Blizzard used to have perfect track record in games. It went down the drain shortly after Activision. Already in Burning Crusade and Wrath of Lich King the favors started racking up to the casuals with the free "invite a friend" XP, char boosts. Item rarity took a total blow from then on; no items are really rare, we are all grinding the same stuff. Its all cheap instance servers not utilizing the existing environment and world, just trying to cut server costs.. Ultra-low % thottbot drops and grinding big bosses is what made the game fun. Also Hearthstone.. scam.

    • @wdf70
      @wdf70 2 года назад

      And in the current game we see what happens when everything starts catering only to the hardcore. You need a middle ground otherwise nobody wins. MMOs need a casual player base because newsflash, it's a bigger portion of the player base than the hardcore which means more sub money for the game. And in turn, you need the hard core players to show the casuals what they could have if they put in a bit of effort and join a raid team or something.
      There's nothing for casual players to do in WoW other than transmog or mount farming. Nobody is interested in running mythic dungeons because it's full of sweaty hard core players who kick people for simple mistakes and the only thing the game has going is the same gear treadmill it's had since day 1. The formula has gotten tired and other games offer much more than WoW does anymore.

    As someone who has paid off their student loans I still think forgiving the interest and just keeping them at 0% interest is a reasonable step to the studen loan depth. You don't get free money. They can't be removed by bankruptcy. And you don't have to pay 150k for a 30-40k loan.

    To refute the graph. There is another group, a non population of a game who hears about a pay to win policy and doesn't like it. That group is probably quite small but every time there's a major story like there was with Star wars battlefront 2 the population of those people gets larger.

    the reason they pay streamers and influencers to market their product is because its cheaper in the long term than traditional commercials. You go to a streamer and says heres 10 promote us for the next 2-3 months in a positive view and most will say yes. where as if you go to large sites or tv/cable media they want like 50k for the slots and then revenue for each add that goes out and % off what is made from those adds. Money is the answer and always will be.

    The thing with Genshin though [what Asmon was mentioning] Is that it was already a modified version of Fate/Grand Order a mobile Gacha of the Fate series. But, what Genshin and FGO got right in terms of gacha, was being a F2P and a gigadick swinging whale didn't make much of a difference. You could still clear all content with what Genshin gave you, was it harder? Yes. But was it doable without being a literal perfect player? Yes. Their system was modified from FGO. There isn't much of a difference between being F2P and a 10k player. The 10k player has waaay better units, and can clear easily, but the F2P still has all the tools to clear the content as well just as easy. And the upgrade paths weren't locked solely to the whales, the time it took to upgrade/resources, were the same exact time it took to upgrade for the 10k player. And those resources, could never be bought with real cash. There was no Get in a car while they run the marathon system. So it retained players, who over time, spent money.
    It's why they print money. People are reluctant to give you money if they feel that they HAVE to. But people will give you money if they see something cool that they don't need. Because people are stupid.

    Pay 2 Win has been around a lot longer than Genshin Impact, the issue was it was mostly with mobile games. AAA gaming companies got wind of how much money the mobile market was making and then began to adopt the practice more and more, some like Activision even blatantly stating to their investors that they wanted the same types of mobile transactions in their PC and console titles because that's where the money was. There were card battle games, afk arena types, etc. that were p2w long before Genshin, it just never entered "mainstream" gaming until the publishers and devs realized how much money they were missing out on and the financial sector started talking about how the mobile gaming market was going to blow away console/PC market in terms of revenue. Activision acquired Candy Crush and then it was all downhill from there and most AAA companies now just want to hook people when they are kids so they have a long term money stream.
    If we're being honest, as humans we've been conditioned for pay 2 win since we were kids. We were told/taught that people who had nicer clothes/dressed better got better jobs/interviews, from day 1 in any kind of sport it was implied the kid with $200 NIke's was better than the kid with $60 Reebok shoes, etc. Obviously that doesn't always work due to human skill level and what not, but it's honestly hilarious to look back over life and see how many people were already convinced of pay 2 win by all the money they wasted on "better" cars, equipment, clothes, etc.

  • @Inuroth

    D3 pay to win was awesome because the money actually (mostly) went to other players and they could cash out to their bank.
    Most mobile games don't give the players a chance to profit.

    45:40, I do disagree that where they are making their main money off of is "trawlers", or smaller spenders. This is just factually incorrect, while it depends on what top percentage you count as "whales", top spenders account for the majority of a game's income.
    Different numbers I have found are top 10% being responsible for 70% a game's income, top .15% being responsible for 50% a game's income, and top 1% for 64% of a games income. While they are wildly different numbers, not a single one supports the claim that small spenders themselves make a mobile game an even comparable amount of money to the top spenders. While they are happy to take anyone's money, whales are who they cater to, the rest of the players are just there to help attract them to the buffet (through keeping the game relevant and "alive").
    This topic is actually brought up in Let's Go Whaling, a video I believe Asmongold himself has watched. It might be worth a rewatch, just because of how prevalent and relevant those techniques are.
