@@thcreedon oh yeah, we see those everywhere; I'm Protestant and that's more of a Catholic thing (and most commonly seen as children who died young, so not technically angels from an essence perspective)
@@thcreedon Yeah, the Catholic church definitely adjusted a lot of things in the Bible to function differently and be closer to human understanding. Hence the twisting of cherubs, saints, and others, and the inclusion of rites that the Bible never asks for.

I'm a Hebrew speaker and I'd like to correct you on two things. The plural for the word El (אל) is Elim (אלים) while the word Elohim (אלוהים) is used as either the name of god or the plural form of (אלוה). both words seem to have the same meaning. Another thing is the concept of honor and awe (כבוד וירא) awe may mean "respect out of fear" or "fear out of respect" (Yera- ירא). The word (Yera- ירא) can also mean fear (Pakhad- פחד). The word honor means (Kavod- כבוד) which can be given to someone out of fear (Yera- ירא). On another note, this is a great video that is very informative. Edit: The word Elohim can also be used as a word for judges, though they are usually called either Shoftim (שופטים) or Dayanim (דיינים)

@@ghostgate82 Shalom. I added awe (thanks for that. It's the perfect word to place there). I don't know what you mean by El = Ocean and Elohim = Water droplets
@@GeekNewz I’ll try to clarify. I’m not sure if you are familiar with the Cabalistic term “Tzimtzum,” but I believe it is the perfect description of how God interacts with the universe. God has to “reduce” Himself several times before we can interact with Him. It’s no different than how we generate electricity on Earth. Take a dam, for example. We generate the electricity at the dam, and then it has to travel through several different transformer stations, being reduced every time, so that by the time it reaches our homes, it won’t explode whatever we plug into the wall. So knowing this, when I say El is the Ocean and Elohim are the droplets, I mean exactly what it sounds like. El is the Source, and there are multitudes of Elohim that are “reductions” of El, reductions that can interact with us without killing us. This is why it is said in numerous places that we cannot see God and live. What it’s truly saying is that we cannot see God in His innate, untransformed nature and live. We can, however, interact with God in His reduced forms (Paraclete, Jesus, angels, saints, etc). I hope this clarified my statement. If you don’t believe this, my intention is not to offend. I’m only here to share what I have come to know. God bless and shalom. 🙏🏻
As a Christian myself, Angels and demons have always fascinated but absolutely terrified me. Just knowing that every interaction with an angel the first thing the Angel says is Fear Not. This shows they're actually terrifying to witness.
We shouldn’t fear angels as we should instead fear God, not his creation. By fearing angels we think they have power over us and we may bow to their power whether in fear or awe. However God has more power than angels so that is why we should instead fear God.

Most all fantastical descriptions of appearance in Jewish literature are deeply symbolic. Eyes represent extra awareness and knowledge. Horns and arms represent strength or physical power. One of my favorite scenes from the Bible is when Joshua sees the angel on the road before the battle of Jericho. Joshua asks him if he is friend or foe, and the angel replies 'Neither one.' Chills.
The person that Joshua is talking to isn't an angel but a Old Testament appearance of Jesus. The evidence to this is because when Joshua fell down in reverence to him the man did not tell him to stand up and not worship him, while in other angelic encounters the angels tell the people they were sent to to stand up. Another bit of evidence is that the man identified himself as the commander of the Lord's armies, and later in Revelations we see Jesus doing this during the Second Coming.

My aunty told my mother the week before she died that she had a dream of three very tall figures at the end of her bed, and she asked, "are you my guardian angels?", and they nodded, and she asked if she was going to die, and they nodded. She had a brain haemorrhage a week or so later and died... so I have always associated angels with tallness, so to hear it in scripture is very eerie. My aunty was also sick in a coma years previous, and my mother dreamed she wouldn't die, despite the hospital saying she would, even though the priest came for last rites. Anyway, she did wake up and told my mother she was somewhere like a sandy desert with loads of people in white shawls lining up to gates, it was windy...my aunty said she pushed forward and a man said "No, not you, it's not your time, not until 10 years", and she woke up...she died about 17 years later actually...

@@baraka629 Myself a Christian, I'm inclined to believe that the winged humanoids that people commonly associate with the term "angel" can be canonically called forms that angels take to make themselves more presentable to mortals...which makes certain scenarios quite funny to think about. For example... Angel: [appears before the shepherds as its eldritch abomination of a true form] Shepherds: (freaking out) "AAAAH! WHAT IS THAT THING?!" etc. Angel: "Fear not, for behold; I bring tidings of great joy that shall be unto all people." Shepherd 2: "No, you don't! Get back, you monster!" Angel: "Huh? Oh, this. My apologies." [assumes a humanoid form] "Is this better?" Shepherds: (relieved) "Phew. Like a million times better. Thank you. Yeah." etc. Angel: "You are welcome. Now, where was I? Oh, yes. I bring tidings of great joy that shall be unto all people." Shepherd 2: "Great. What are they?" Shepherd 3: "Let him finish."

There are no angels, there are no fairies, no elves, no giants, no gods, no devils. These are all stories to frighten children (and some adults), Grow up!
I think the whole “biblically accurate angels looklike terrifying lovecraft monsters” has less to do with angels actually being scary and more to do with Lovecraft being one of the first to really grasp just how bizarre and otherworldly beings with that kind of unfathomable cosmic power would truly be.
The vid features many solid data points, some interesting speculative points but is based on category errors by including Cherubim, Seraphim, and Ophanim with Angels but each of these is a distinct category of being, by definition: different job titles, different job functions, and different morphologies. That may be why he sometimes opted for the term "celestials" but then, why include them all in a vid about, "Angels"?
@@KenAmmi-Shalom I remember hearing once that the other celestial beings like cherubim and seraphim were eventually conflated with angels in the post-biblical period, so that could be why
This was fascinating for me, as a native Arabic speaker. I never knew that the names of the angels were essentially “something”+”el.” Before Islam, Arabic used “el,” “elah,” & “el lat” as names for god (or A god). “Allah” later came as the most common proper name for the monotheistic God, but “elah” still remains as a word meaning god. In addition, “Allah,’ is actually an amalgamation of “Al” (same as in Spanish, meaning “the” and “lah” effectively translating as “The God.” I also have to admit that whenever I listen to these early stories about angles and god, I can’t help but think of Sitchin and Von Daniken. It just sounds so much like ancient people describing helicopters, jets, rovers and such. @metatron have you made a video examining the claims of Sitchin and/or Von Daniken?
Can't recall the titles of the videos, but there was one about the pineapple apparently depicted on ancient Roman artwork. And a few other mentions when it comes to misinformation (apparent modern technology on hieroglyphs and such). "Similis simili gaudet", it's just how human logic works selectively. A civilisation will also notice or look for similarities and ignore other clues.
I’ve always had a slight issue with how we label biblically accurate angels as monsters but I suppose the same argument can be made for demons following the logic of my train of thought . Perhaps it’s just natural if human beings to name that which we cannot comprehend as monstrous.

No, very disturbing because he is wandering all over the place for his sources. The PRESERVED word of God, the King James Version of the Bible (not the modern corrupted versions based on the forgeries known as the Codex Sinaiticus and the Codex Vaticanus), tells us who the angels actually are. And several passages in the King James Bible clearly identify Michael - titled the "Archangel" - is actually the heavenly name for Jesus, Son of God, who is the COMMANDER of the angels. Michael is NOT an angel. Lucifer is the name of Satan when he was in heaven before Michael (Jesus), booted him out after he started war in heaven. The Cherubim and Seraphim are the other types of angels mentioned in the King James Bible. It seems to me that where it seems to describe they had many eyes, it could be that their WINGS had the appearance of several eyes, like the spread tail feathers of a peacock.
@charity2275 The Metatron uses multiple sources because that I the true way to understand. Your saying the King James Bible is the only true source shows how indoctrinated you are. The current version of any Bible is translated and edited to support what the translator wanted. That includes the King James version.
@charity2275 new kings James in not a pure preserved version of the bible actually its a very cherry picked version that he published around the mid 16 hundreds if I'm not mistaken so I'm sorry my friend no disrespect but that wasn't a factual statement
Growing up as a Christian, I always thought it was weird that every time an angel presented itself to a person in the Bible they immediately had to tell them not to be afraid. When I grew up and actually got an idea of what those angels looked like, I finally understood why it was necessary. I'd probably soil myself if anything looking like one of these angels appeared in front of me 😅
Even if they looked more human, they brought weapon of mass destruction levels of judgement as often as they brought good news. I'm nervous enough when a cop car pulls up behind me while driving; and, these cops *don't* have the authority of Judge Dredd and a pocket nuke!
And just imagine what God himself looks like. Beautiful beyond comprehension, yes, but yet it would be a sight so otherworldly most would be driven insane if they weren’t given context, as in He just appeared out of thin air without you ever knowing you were seeing God. Well, there’s God in the flesh, Christ, but God’s ethereal form must be crazyyyyyyy.
I think you misunderstand, the kind of messenger angels that go down to earth to deliver news to people are not the monstrous ones covered with eyes and surrounded by wheels. The angel Gabriel looks just like a man but says do not be afraid several times to people. The kind of angels that approach humans and tell them not to be afraid would have just looked like regular humans, perhaps with a divine aura surrounding them, but not terrifying entities.
As a Christian, thank you so much for this! I get kinda frustrated when friends of mine and other people call the "monstrous" looking ones Biblically accurate and act like they figured out how all angels look. I try to mention that there's mentions of angels that just look human too. Though, yes, the baby ones were never in the Bible.
The baby ones were a mistaken conflation of the Greek god Cupid (depicted as a winged baby) with descriptions of angels. The Bible also never mentions a single female angel. The common depiction of winged women comes from people mistaking statues of the winged goddess Nike (messenger goddess of victory) for a Biblical angel. There could also be some conflation with Norse Valkyries as well.
@@randlebrowne2048I don't actually think it's people mistaking these figures for angels. It's entirely possible that artists simply liked how the gods and goddesses looked like and that's just how they interpreted angels to look like as well and now we're stuck with this depiction due to it being engrained in our culture
Wait. Do you not tell them that a country or an ideology is an angel? Do you not mention the huge difference between symbolic/experiential depictions and camera-esc ones?

An interesting thing about the Cherubim and Wheel's description of movement is that they are said to go without turning. This may mean they do not turn i.e. they face only in one direction, or it may mean they go in a straight line. To turn often means simply to turn aside. So to say that someone goes without turning may simply mean they go straight toward their destination or in a straight direction.

And as a child, the sword that pointed in all directions was such a strange and appealing concept.
I think that the naked winged babies actually came from Greek depictions of Cupid (to be later confused with angels, due to the wings). In a similar manner, the Greek goddess Nike (messenger goddess of victory) was depicted as a winged woman. There are no mentions of female angels in the Bible.

Dr Michael Heiser has written a few books on angels and supernatural creatures in Abrahamic religion. Definitely a must-read for anyone interested in this topic. He goes through the original Hebrew terms used and how they evolved over time. More interesting, he also goes into how Egyptian and Mesopotamian mythology inspired these creatures. For example, he explains that Seraphim and Cherubim are both throne guardians, but the term Seraph is more common in texts with a heavy Egyptian influence while Cherabim appear in texts with more Mesopotamian influence. Just goes to show how all of these cultures exchanged ideas and shaped each other’s supernatural world views.
Yes! Hardly anyone ever mentions the Mesopotamian/Egyptian connections when discussing biblical “angels”. It’s where they originate from (like a lot of things in the Abrahamic religions).
I have always liked the horrifying appearance of angels, even long before this was common knowledge on the Internet. I was fascinated by it all the way back in the 80s. To me the part of it, it seemed interesting is that as you pointed out that gonzo appear perfectly unremarkable human if they choose. This is so hot like in other traditions, other religions where the divine form of this or that god, Apollo, Zeus, and others in other pagan traditions, are appearing in human form for the benefit and safety of humans. A human cannot perceive third through the volume form and live. I have always assumed the trippy appearances of Angels is a sort of intermediate stage between something people can comprehend and a divine form that breaks your brain enough to kill you. Very thorough and I am very much enjoyed this video and appreciate you taking the time to do it.
I have always assumed the trippy form of angels is a result of the authors tripping while writing it^^

I agree with the comprehension of them part, I too think it is a compromise and also the human mind filling in blanks spots. Like the angel looks at them and it FEELS like a million eyes are upon you, so you picture many eyes. Or the divine energy is coming off it like gusts of wind, thus you picture many wings flapping. And so on.
I liked that part in the beginning "I am just a messenger". Also I believe that what was mentioned in Ezekiel was in fact a vehicle; the "eyes" being windows and the faces were like hood ornaments you'd see on a car. Each "Face" representing the north most, south, eastern, and western tribes of Israel. Finally, I really found that part about the statues of Michael being perfectly aligned with one another quite interesting.
They are aligned in a line as it was a meteor which broke down when entering atmosphere and pieces strone earth in a line. People that witnessed the event and the impacts, errected places of warship or as secret etc.
Keep in mind they were visions and not visitations when angels come to talk to someone they do so in the form of men. The visions are not likely about their “true form” but teaching something about them
There's a 1970s book called *Chariots of the Gods* that posits the same theory, and concludes that the machines are UFOs. It was made into a kind of documentary movie as well. Personally I thought it was poorly argued woo woo of the type that was popular back then.

Having attempted translation of lyrics from German into English to be sung, it REALLY gives me an appreciation of the kinds of choices and the trade-offs that go into a thing like that. And in my own case I gave up some of the literal words in order to maintain feelings, ideas, and lyricism, and that absolutely is important to remember that things like that could have happened in translations of the Bible.
Armies of much smarter scholars than any of us have gone about translating the Bible over the past hundreds and thousands of years so be careful before claiming we know more than them.
As a Catholic I find the descriptions of the angels in the Bible fascinating. I would love a modern day renaissance-style painting depicting bibically accurate angels.
I’ve been a Christian most of my life and have spent many hours struggling to figure some of these out (especially the wheels and eyes bit…😣). Thank you for this. It’s nice to get new information to ponder, lol.
Read 'The Language of Creation' by Matthieu Pageau. The wheels have to do with the axis of 'time', that is the force of change, natural destruction, and rest/renewal. The four faces generally represent the gospels, even in the old testament, as the face of the man is a theophany of Christ. Edit: oops, the second part was from the Orthodox study Bible. The book I was talking about refers to the lower animal faces as representing a dichotomy of earthly beings and the eagle as the heavens, the face of man being the joining of the two in mediation, roughly speaking.
@@werrkowalski2985 If it sounds poor then my two sentence mixed metaphor summary of one aspect might not be the best representation of an entire book lol
@@DoctorLazertron I mean, I'm no expert, but it sounds protestant and fairly speculative, that the wheels represent time, change, destruction, rest/renewal. May even suggest dialectical themes, ie some idea that dichotomy between destruction/creation is fundamental, and there is a balance between the two.
When I was born my mom said “she’s an Angel” and promptly named me Gabriel. Before that it was supposed to be Abigail. So I ended up Gabriel Gail. ❤ I love my beautiful name, even when I get confused (during appointments or mail) as a man 😂

Biblically, there's only one named archangel and that's Michael. All other archangels are archangels by tradition, not because of what's written in the Bible.
@@gamera5160 Well, as I understand other sources, the second named is Gabriel with some contest if they are named. And as Metatron points out in the video, though first I've heard of it, Gabriel may not be a single angel.

I'm always impressed about how "easy" these videos look like, like if you made them within a few hours because you just KNOW these things. But I know that there must be so much effort and research behind it, not only to learn these things, but to present them so accurately and comprehensibly. Thanks for that exciting history lesson. :D An who would have thought that the interpretations of angels in "Bayonetta" were closer to the original than all western movies I have ever seen. xD
Excellent linguistic study and some of this is new to me. The problem with ancient languages, and I did study Latin for 4 years and also German, is that they can be hard to transliterate directly to English. It always leads to interpretation of what the text is trying to say to you instead of what it actually says because the literal interpretation doesn't seem to make that much sense to us modern and therefore more educated people (lol). Other points to consider is that native speakers of an ancient tongue do have word usages that are not meant to be literal but more of a shorthand so that complex thoughts and practices can be spoken in relatively few words. Brevity is the soul of wit.
German is an "ancient language" in your book? Also, this is perhaps just me, but in my experience translators tend to often try way too hard to avoid points of possible confusion, underestimating the intelligence of their readers, and making the translation more elaborate than it needs to be in the process. This isn't necessarily the greatest example to use because of the relation, but it's irritated me to read translations of Old English texts and consistently see translators coming across a word that is a direct ancestor of a modern English term, and they go out of their way to use another word in an attempt to be more precise when the definition hasn't even deviated that much. Sometimes it is needed because a word has significantly drifted, but a lot of the time it's not. Imo direct translation is generally preferable to interpretative translation if the reader knows what they're signing up for.
@@tommeakin1732 Obviously German isn't an ancient language, Old German is, but not modern German. My point was that I have studied Latin, an ancient language, and German. It was just a side comment, but what I was trying to say was that it can be difficult to translate directly from one language to another and if it is a dead language (that it is not used as a daily language anymore) you are trying to translate can make it even more problematic to get a good translation. That is it.
Awesome video! Also wind can also imply spirit or breath, or even life in Hebrew. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember learning in an early Hebrew class about the complexity of wind and breath and their meanings in ancient Jewish culture. It was more than just literal air at times.
Very true! I don’t know Hebrew, but in the Romanian Orthodox Bible these “winds” are always called “breath” and very obviously refer to breath of life/spirit. That’s how I always interpreted them.

I think I heard he tried to make an argument for the Masoretic version of Goliath’s height (the “six cubits and a span” or nine foot nine) being more legitimate than the Septuagint’s one (the “four cubits and a span” or six foot nine). I don’t know if he was right about that at all, I doubt it: there are many other versions and accounts before the Masoretic that put Goliath at “four cubits and a span” not six

@roberth721 Part of that is the broader political environment in the US, especially among individuals in my general age group. Conservative Christians are very unpopular in this group, and as a result, we tend to either keep to ourselves or build little echo chamber bubbles with a handful of constituents. Those things, the tendency towards silence or self-isolation and the more common or at least more loud harsh opinions, are often much more concentrated online, exaggerating the effect. It makes seeing openly Christian/Judeo-Christian comments outside of explicitly Christian channels seem to be something of a rarity.

Elohim = Water droplets

People are terrified of being judged, so an angel's appearance doesn't matter, humanity is still gonna be terrified of angels.
We shouldn’t fear angels as we should instead fear God, not his creation. By fearing angels we think they have power over us and we may bow to their power whether in fear or awe. However God has more power than angels so that is why we should instead fear God.
Do not fear demons as well because they have no power over us… Demons are only fallen angels.

What chapter is that?
The person that Joshua is talking to isn't an angel but a Old Testament appearance of Jesus. The evidence to this is because when Joshua fell down in reverence to him the man did not tell him to stand up and not worship him, while in other angelic encounters the angels tell the people they were sent to to stand up. Another bit of evidence is that the man identified himself as the commander of the Lord's armies, and later in Revelations we see Jesus doing this during the Second Coming.

In addition, “Allah,’ is actually an amalgamation of “Al” (same as in Spanish, meaning “the” and “lah” effectively translating as “The God.”

Look up the works of the late Dr Michael Heiser. His work on angels and the heavenly host is very good.

😅😅😅 The baby ones aren't so bad, they are cute, wish there were angel babies

An interesting thing about the Cherubim and Wheel's description of movement is that they are said to go without turning. This may mean they do not turn i.e. they face only in one direction, or it may mean they go in a straight line. To turn often means simply to turn aside. So to say that someone goes without turning may simply mean they go straight toward their destination or in a straight direction.

My gaming tag has been Cherub since I read a children's bible when I was young and saw the Cherubim guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden. It's been a little annoying over the years having to explain that it isn't a damn naked baby. Things got a little easier when "biblically accurate angels" hit the mainstream.

What are you on? Religions are just a form of indoctrination to put the masses in place. See 'Russia' and 'North Korea' for modern examples.
And so on.

An who would have thought that the interpretations of angels in "Bayonetta" were closer to the original than all western movies I have ever seen.

Thanks for this video: I've only ever seen one other video on RUclips (that wasn't AI generated or based on crystal healing) about biblically-accurate angels. Lovely to have another angle on the topic!
Your understanding of the physicality of the Hebrew worldview is well appreciated.
One of my pet peeves is people thinking angels are supposed to be ethereal spirits. How many can dance on the head of a pin is a nonsense question.
Even if you’re not a believer. Hearing somebody reading the word of GOD gives me always goosebumps.
Only if you give power to what people say. You could also feel goosebumps listening IronMans God Buster armor's powers if you let your emotions give the fictional tale power.
Or horror stories when camping.
What does other people not believing have to do with reading this giving you goosebumps?
@@hermitcard4494 sigh
yeah
how interesting and secular of you to mention this
i'm impressed by your engagement with this topic
go forth, little skeptic, and make confusion among men
@@roehanostornsyn3367 He is merely pointing out the obvious. No reason for personal insults.
Getting goosebumps got nothing to do with what someone is listening to, but how it is written and read. It also got nothing to do with what anyone is believing or not believing.
It's the same thing as going into a cathedral and being in awe about the architecture. Completely irrelevant if one believes in what the cathedral represents.
However, this effect is arguably stronger for a believer, since they give additional meaning to what they hear (or see, respectively).
Also, it's not the skeptic causing confusion among men. It's the thousands of religions fighting over who got the right belief confusing people, when none of them can prove their claims.
@@roehanostornsyn3367 christians wont feel any goosebumps listening Hindu mythology because they wont give any emotional power to Hindu myths; and Hindus wont feel any goosebumps listening christian myths. Each religious group will instead feel goosebumps listening WHAT THEY BELIEVE TO BE TRUE: their OWN religion.
¿Why is it hard to accept that's how humans work? For good and bad; which means I dont have to like my own opinion, it's what it is.
This is fantastic! I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Joseph Smith recorded his own experience with angles this falls under his description. I understand people might say I am biased but I find all of this study fascinating from any angle.
This was very informative and most importantly, thought provoking. This is the first video I have seen from this channel, but look forward to looking through the catalogue.
It's kind of fun to see so many comments begin with variations of the phrases, "As a Christian," or "Growing up as a Christian." It's a nice reminder that we're not alone in our faith.
On another note, I loved this video! Very interesting analysis.
Why would you feel alone in your faith when Christianity is one of the largest religions in the world? Honest question.
I spend a fair amount of time online, so that's what I see most often.
That sounds a bit whiny, in retrospect. I suggest reading that in the flattest tone you can imagine.

Cuz it's becoming a trend to mock Christians and their faith in modern times, but you barely see that with other religions.
don’t most people in the west grow up christian? maybe not as common as it used to be, kinda sad actually.
