- British post-punk band Joy Division performing "Day of the Lords", live at the Apollo Theatre in Manchester, UK.
This is part of the compilation tape "Here Are The Young Men" and was recorded on 28th October, 1979. Released in 1982 by Factory Records (Fact 37).
There are doom metal bands that can't come within sight of this apocalyptic depression Joy Division ruthlessly destroys pretenders with this piece,
Factsssss
YEAP.
Example?
Yessir. And they all probably love Joy Division as well.
Joy Division were one of those bands that brought metalheads and punks together. They had a special sound.
joy divisions live stuff reaches a level of brutality that most hardcore and screamo bands still struggle to match. the studio recordings are a lot more restrained and intimate feeling, however the more intense live sound matches the desperation of the lyrics perfectly and creates a vibe that is disgustingly oppressive. crazy to think this was written in the late 70’s
This footage is a holy grail of music history
Gosh they sound loud af
what a great band in such a short period of time
My dad saw New Order live in the early 80's and he said it was the loudest gig hes ever been to. I imagine JD was the same situation
This is 300 years ahead of it's time....it will end with millions copying you
Already
What a gem to have this on video.
you can tell this band was all about making great rock music, they were not just in it for the money, drugs, & sex
But they got them, anyway.😂
Such a haunting song. One of the greatest, utterly inspired. Can’t hear it enough.
No make up, no skull tattoos, no yelling, no edge lord lyrics; still the darkest song I’ve ever heard. True masters of atmosphere 🙌
Ian Curtis is an extraordinary terrestrial being
Even by their standards this is an amazing song and despite the sound quality it is such a treasure to have video clips like this.
Thank you.
Exactly today, 40 years ago Unknown Pleasures was born. Masterpiece of all the times. 😍😍
"... WHERE WILL IT END!!!"
huge importance of this song.
37 years ago today. Again, so good to have that on the live video. Great song.
BlackKnightGameplays Indeed, not a lot of people bothered or had the means to film Joy Division back then. This a piece of musical history.
honestly a really solid live performance
It's like watching something sacred.
he had an upcoming seizure during that concert. the other bandmembers occasionaly checked his conditions. if you see the whole thing you will notice.
thanks so much ! Very fascinating and rare live moment. Ian seems quite tired.
Tired with life. I imagine he was always like this.
He was having seizures throughout the show
That’s truly metaphysical ... mesmerising and beautiful.
This is an example to an argument how Joy Division singlehandedly influenced Seattle’s grunge scene.
Were Nirvana the next great band after Joy Division?
@@SharkaToddy not really

40 years ago today....18th May. RIP Ian.
that feedback at 3:54 is life
Just awesome no body does this better
Monumental!
38 years ago Rest In Peace Ian
Where will we end? Well, not in a nice place. But I'll prefer, at any time, to travel with this in my ears - destined to destruction and fall. Doomed to eternal suffering rather than chewygummish moments of nothingness in an endless popsong.
2:06 - 2:30 . . . i got a little teary eyed
Why’s that?
@@teamklaytron6194 There's a strong aura of mental, physical, and emotional pain radiating from Ian Curtis here.
Merci pour ce Sublimissime chef d'oeuvre. Joy division a jamais les premiers !!!
Pisses all over the album version. Full of menace, threat and balls. That base drum sound belongs at the end of the world!
Are you sure you don’t mean the snare drum with the delay effect? There’s very little base drum actually.
@@Hwral *bass
The LP version is full of the same.
huge thanks.
RIP Ian
33 years ago today, rest in peace Ian.
I could always relate with this.
I was there
Do you remember it well?
this song is pure evil...the way ian leaves the stage at the end...goosebumps every time
evil?
This is heavenly.
can't believe you guys associated evil with bad, sorry i didn't say dark, ominous or some other prettier word lol...
Seismic!
What an awesome find ❤️
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wish I was there.
This is 43 years old tomorrow.
Insane how real and ahead of their time they rlly were…
This that real music man
I am shocked this got filmed
Awsome man!! Great stuff. Thanks for the upload!!! Good sound. Amazing voice!
THanks man :)
Very dark and disturbing performance but it’s beautiful I wonder what the atmosphere must have felt like for those present
I like this. A bit like the Neurosis cover.
Soo fucking heavy
Slayer eat your heart out
Охренеть просто банда!
банда четырех)
Doom metal classic. Take note bands, weed and messing around with guitars doesn't necessarily make you doomy.
metal?
@@EuanGabbuttgenres aren’t just black and white. This song has a lot of metal undertones to it. This band undoubtedly serves as an influence to many later metal bands to come
"Where are the young (lucky) men"?
Great footage.
Was the whole gig videod ?
Yes, released on videotape in 1982 as Here Are The Young Men. Don’t think it ever got released on DVD
Ian had to be a fan of James Brown. Boy had the moves.
this looks like the last thing you will see before entering hell
TO ETERNITY. SAVE IAN !!!
The late seventies revisited.
Ian Curtis was a prophet
As a band, Joy Division create gloomy songs that are somehow cathartic, examining emotional outbursts right at the centre of the darkest soul.
2:20 Looks like he was about to having a seizure
Where will it end?
(pra zer intensificado com auscultadores)
No portrait so fine, only shit on the walls!
I wish Christopher Hazard was into Joy Division lol
WISPRWORLD/RUclips MYSPACE/WISPRWORLD
The Wall vibes from pink Floyd
Fuk no 🤮
Pity about the appalling sound quality.......and video.
Yeah that’s how it was back in the day.
It's part of the charm.
William Wallace I find it really enhances the experience, draws you into their world.
1979
@@commercialbreak8290 Is that answer ? if it is then it's an extremely dumb one. I have Blu-ray and DVD films/concerts etc from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's which are pristine quality. Don't try to tell me that the reason this footage is crap is because it's from 1979 you absolute idiot.
This is pretty fuckin , Rad .
