Just one of my favourite all time jams. It’s cool that BJ is rocking the Jays hat to this. This song was used in Raptors commercials a few years back. BJ clearly reppin the T Dot.
Most hip hop beats were sample based and full of real instrument sounds between 87 and the mid to late 90's. If you like the jazz angle check out A Tribe Called Quest / Gangstarr / Black Sheep etc.
FYI... Hip Hop's roots are in New York and many of the artist coming out at the beginning listened to or we surrounded by Jazz. Free Form has its roots there as well. Other artist also incorporated jazz in their rap, like Diggable Planets. Listen to Rebirth of Slick.
Rakim, the GOD emcee, thank you to Rakim for shifting rapping into the bar focused lyricism that we have today. Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, Scarface, Chuck D & Ice Cube are the OGs of lyrical rapping.
"It's Been a Long Time" , "Remember That", "Lyrics of Fury" [I have this song title tattooed to me], "The 18th Letter", "Holy Are You", etc etc. Rakim has so0o many classic songs.
They still doin it like legends. Saw em in Boston House of Blues a few years ago. Amazing. YoYo opening act....One of the tightest hip hop shows I've ever seen.
Another cool thing about this album is besides Eric B mixing the rest of the instruments are being played live. Real drums, real stand up Bass, real bad ass on the mic. Don't hurt em R
In late of 1989 a lot of east coast Rappers a bit in the west from 89-92ish many used jazz samples in their beats it was very popular before that James Brown was sample very heavy and of course other genre were sample or remade as well.
It also hurts that Gen Z don't even sample anymore, use vinyl DJs, have a dance crew, unique flows, live instruments with bands and be politically, educationally and socially conscious.
Every NY rapper in that era was caught up in the Bridge Wars, you were either on the side of Queensbridge rep'd by The Juice Crew (MC Shan) or the Bronx rep'd by Boogie Down Productions (KRS1). Rakim, although not directly involved still fell on the side of the Bronx, for years people compared and speculated who would win between Rakim and Big Daddy Kane (Juice Crew). Its always kinda a battle that never was, people today still think they should battle.
Hahaha I already knew this song, so I was just bopping along with my eyes closed at first and when I opened them BJ and I had the exact same body language! ❤❤❤😂😂😂
Rakim is definitely on the Mount Rushmore of GOAT MC's. "Paid in Full", "I ain't no Joke" are songs you guys should check out. They also did a collab with Jody Watley, "Friends" that was pretty dope. It seemed to me that after that song a lot of other Rap artist's started teaming up with R & B singers on the regular... Rakim is a Pioneer, a true Legend...
i like eric and rakim thanks old school classics but there is also another group from the 80s old school rap it's EPMD it would be good to react to one of their sounds like "you got to chill"👍
Hip Hop music incorporated all sounds from the beginning. Funk and Soul were first then the rest right after. Also Tribe Called Quest were the first to really infuse Jazz. Please go back to their first album in 86. Paid In full, in my opinion is the blueprint in making a real Hip Hop album. Rakim’s family were performers in Jazz and his mother sang both Jazz & Opera and I believe she performed at the Apollo.
Back in the day, there was much more actual music played in hip hop, not just a drum track. Check out the British jazz/rap group called US3. They commissioned the rights to the entire Blue Note jazz catalogue, sample all the great jazz classics in their rap style and add their own horns, etc. The album 'Hand on the Torch'. Infectious beats/rap woven into the jazz classics with extra spice added.
You're right about the voice thing with Will Smith because in an interview Will Smith admitted he tried to imitate rakim sound so that he can become a little more influential in the genre himself Will Smith emulated rakim's voice in cadence this man is the rap God
Hip-Hop came from Jazz and Blues. These genres of records were sampled to create the sound you're hearing. After the industry saw how lucrative Hip-Hop was becoming, they started making producers pay royalties for the samples. Rap music today sounds different because it lacks that Soul foundation. In contrast, that's why the Legendary Roots Crew is so unique.
This song came out around 1992. It sounds like it was recorded with some live instruments. That was common with some rap back then. With 80s and 90s rap there was more sampling. That's why you heard more instrument sounds in music back then. In today's rap you don't hear much sampling. So you don't hear many instruments in rap nowadays. You get more digital/computer type sounds now. Maybe sampling became too expensive?
I think he got in a beef with KRS-ONE. I don't know how it got started or ended. But I know that LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee got into a strong beef. I mean he had one of LL's hats under his jeep tire. LL wrote "Mama Said knock you out " and "I'm Bad" as disses to Kool Moe Dee. Just thought I'd drop that on you cuz to get into a riff with Rakim, you gotta be crazy and careful.
Hello, please, PLEASE make a reaction to Dimash's songs written in Los Angeles by Dimash Qudaiberg during the war - "When I've got you" OFFICIAL MV, and the dance performance "Smoky", they are of a very high level, and I continue to watch your reactions to Dimash ,they are professional and kind, and help me live
Asia must be thinking of the song Summer Time. Will Smith had a sore throat and switched his cadence to be similiar to Rakim's cadence. Will Smith and Rakim joke about it. Initially many pople thought it was Rakim's song.
Rakim did not have rap beef, because NO ONE could touch him on the mic. Funkadelic was in the1970s and early 1980's. It was P-funk. It was not rap. They are two different genres we jam to.
Can you react to the band Lit one song is Miserable, the other Lit song is My own Worst Enemy. Both are better to watch actual video its an experience just a thought, Keep up the good work really like watching you all. If you want another song to think about Nitty gritty dirt band song bame fishin in the dark.
Rakim is the God MC not because his skill(which is incredible) but because he belongs to The Nation Of Gods And Earths aka The 5 Percenters. He is Rakim Allah.
Will Smith sounds like Rakim. Will Smith didn't know how to rhyme until he heard Rakim and mocked his intonation on Summer Time. Before that, Will Smith was different.
Ladies and gentlemen, introducing real , authentic Hip-Hop. Eric B and Rakim were a perfect storm. Nobody does it like that, even now.
Rakim grew up listening to Jazz ...he's the god MC and Eric B is a master.
Didn’t notice the jazz connection before, but now I do. Thanks.
I don't know about Eric B being a master... yeah sure... a master of Rakim doing most of work for his benefit. Respect to the God MC Rakim Allah.
It's funny she said Rakim sounds like Will Smith. It's the other way around. Will Smith said he borrowed Rakim's flow for his song "Summertime".
I think she meant literally that they have very similar voices...not necessarily their flow.
Will Smith didn't even write "Summertime" lol he had ghostwriters
she clearly stated she didn't know Eric b and rakim lol... she knows nothing about hip hop
@@debonaireslotsshe wasn’t around, much younger
I Ain't No Joke, My Melody, Paid In Full, and Follow The Leader are other bangers. They were out in the mid 80's to the mid 90's. Great time in rap.
Absolutely... Classic jams!

Rakim said in an interview that he listened to alot of jazz to expand his vocal structure with singing his lyrics.
He was a jazz musician as a child.
'Follow the Leader'.
Such an excellent song!
Just one of my favourite all time jams.
It’s cool that BJ is rocking the Jays hat to this. This song was used in Raptors commercials a few years back. BJ clearly reppin the T Dot.
You can hear the direct influence from Eric B to groups like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Souls of Mischief.
Rakim comes from musical family his mom was classical jazz singer. His brother was a musician his aunt his Ruth Brown R&b jazz soul singer
Most hip hop beats were sample based and full of real instrument sounds between 87 and the mid to late 90's. If you like the jazz angle check out A Tribe Called Quest / Gangstarr / Black Sheep etc.

Rakim played the trumpet in high school. His mother sang jazz, and orbitted in John Coltrane's circle. He represents Strong Island well.

Woohoo awesome! Follow the Leader my favorite of theirs, thanks y’all!
Rakim is the God Emcee! Lyrically untouchable
Classic Old School Rap
No cursing, he made most of his beats. Mahogany, In the Ghetto is my favorites. Cold cold songs. 🏆🏆
They still doin it like legends. Saw em in Boston House of Blues a few years ago. Amazing. YoYo opening act....One of the tightest hip hop shows I've ever seen.
None of these current rappers can touch Rakim.
That upright bass sample still crazy

They were fire back in the day!
Still fire! 🔥👍

It really hurts my soul that more people dont know nor understand the greatness and influence on Rap that the God MC Rakim HAS.
It also hurts that Gen Z don't even sample anymore, use vinyl DJs, have a dance crew, unique flows, live instruments with bands and be politically, educationally and socially conscious.
He wrote summertime for will Smith
My favorite rapper hands down
So technical but smooth with it

Love that song!
rap after 2000s don't even come close to this. CLASSick!
It's not just bass that drives the song, it's ACOUSTIC bass! Not too many rap songs have that!

The best era 🤘🤘
Hip hop is culture. Rap is music that came from the blues like rock came from the blues.
lots of current rappers use a nonstop sample. This instrumentation style was what was going on, for example Gangstarr.
If you want to truly understand Rakim’s brilliance, check out the songs ‘Follow the Leader’ and ‘Juice (Know the Ledge)’.
