  • The WNBA is seeing a rise in ratings and interest. With that comes controversy as sexism and racism questions arise regarding the media’s discussion of players and the players’ treatment from observers and fans. Jemele Hill, contributing writer at The Atlantic and host of "The Jemele Hill is unbothered" podcast, joins Joy Reid to discuss.

So that means that you're not supporting her or her contributions to the WNBA. That also means that you're part of the problem and division in women's sports.
Tell Caitlin that you only watch her and I bet she'll tell you she doesn't want that kind of support. In a USA Today interview, she even said that 'it stinks that these conversations are not about the game and the amazing players in the WNBA and how great the season has been for women's basketball' Caitlin Clark is a good player, but you and all the other hater's of the WNBA will sink her ship eventually. Now, it is pretty disgusting that Clark is getting so much hype - some are trying to treat her like 'the great white hope' of the WNBA & that's just stupid. She is not promoting this however, atleast not to my knowledge? I do however, hope Players back off from the kind of fouls that could put her off the Court for long periods of time, because love her/hate her - she is helping to put new butts in seats! Which i would think will lift up everyone & the sport itself, even sooner, than later??!

Yes she's drawing new viewers. And what do they see? The WNBA is an overall ugly product. It's too much 1980s NBA Bad boys bullyball rather than a physical but enjoyable game to watch. How is it that the Aces A'ja Wilson, a sure to be hall of famer and one of the WNBA's best ever and top player now, plays about 8 or 9 games and has her contact lens knocked out of her on a hit, is knocked to the ground hard at least 4 times in 4 games and lies there for a period of time and has bled at least twice? That's not something a lot of people want to watch. By no means is Caitlin the only one getting hit hard or is it unusual for players to go after rookies. Maybe Caitlin gets more hits but this type of hazing idiocy happens in most sports. Still, the refs, the league, need to do something. They have a product that would have more viewers and more known stars if it was a less brutal thing to watch. And for those that call me soft, fine, I'll be soft then. That word means nothing to me in this context. Keep the players safe and make the product better.

The WNBA has been losing money since its beginning. It is bailed out constantly by the NBA. This will change with Caitlin who draws large crowds because of her outstanding talent, skills, decency and ability to play basketball. She wasn't handed awards because she is white. She was handed awards because she EARNED them through hard work, dedication and being goal oriented. She is a true star, not a faked up, glitzy pseudo trying to demand stardom. Other players should strive to be the best that they can be and let Caitlin Clark be the best that she can be. She has not said one word against anyone on her own team or on any opponent's team and has, in fact, pointed out their strengths and talent when reporters ask her about them. Caitlin wants everyone to win and share in the improved league.

If you follow professional sport it is not necessary hate or jealousy. They come for you if you are given the title as the best in any sport (individual sport is different). The top rookie in the NFL and NBA get tested every time they hit the bigtime. Even the college freshman that comes in with a sensational tag gets challenged. Michael Jordan was challenged... a famous player on the US Men's basketball team told others not to pass MJ the ball. These are all black players. I do not think it's about race for the players despite the make belief racial undertone. The media has racialized the issue with the steady glorification of a brilliant white player. Caitlin is talented and she is unbothered by the events on the court. I'm sure she knows or the team that she has off the court reminds her of the storylines. This is good for the game.
