The term ESL has been updated to ELA, English Language Acquisition. These courses focus on all areas of English language development, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation etc. All of the students in ELA classes are English Language Learners (ELL).
Hi Gregory, this session about the Fraser score is very inspiring. May I clarify the steps between securing school interview and renting/buying a living place ...... 1) Is it necessary to rent/buy a property in the catchment area before having the school interview? 2) After studying in the catchment school (say 1-year), is it possible to rent another flat in different catchment area?
I lived in a higher ranking school area not because of the school ranking but it was just co-incident. Actually, each school has good teachers and not as good. It is more important the school culture fits to your kid. For this September, our son has to switch from a private elementary to a public high school, we visited another high ranking high school in the next neighborhood and talked to the teachers that offered a special program thinking might fit to our son. We also talked to his home school zone teachers. After discussion with our son and considered other factors, we have decided to stay at his home zone high school. We attended the parents nights and keep communicating with our son to ensure he likes his school. We are happy for the decision.
Very informative. If possible can you elaborate a bit more on your views of private vs public schools as my relatives highly recommended us enrolling into private. FYI she lives in Richmond Hill, her boy completed double majors in UT and just got his master degree. Her family was migrated from PRC some years ago so her circle is more PRC oriented. I think you know what I mean.😉 Thanks.
Is funny that I went to Bayview Secondary School, and i started with ESL with a level C? The highest as I remember is level F? But I finished grade 12 English on time and were able to graduate to Uoft at the end. I would say the ESL teachers were fairly nice and patient. One problem with Bayview Secondary School is having too many Chinese, to be honest, I don't think high schools make a big difference on your uni, but to be fair and safe, it is a good option.
Unless you live outside GTA, schools are all having large percentage in Asian or South Asian students nowadays. I moved to Canada after form 6. School still recommended me to study a lower grade for some subjects and ESL. I did an assessment before attending the interview and did not follow their recommendations. I am glad I made that decision as I could get to University right after taking 8 courses with 2 semesters without attending night or summer schools like other students did.
Should the kids learn basic French in HK before moving to Canada? What secondary language is generally used? Any school provide Chinese language learning? Thx!
You don’t have to learn French unless you live in Quebec, when the children are grade 3,4 they will learn French as a secondary language in public school system. For private school, usually starts French since 2,3 years old. Bilingual. As for Chinese learning, Toronto public school board provides free Chinese/ Cantonese lesson once a week.
From my own experience, I don’t think learning basic French in HK is necessary unless u are going into a fresh school in Canada. There will be French classes that mandatory in high schools. In terms of what secondary languages were used, I guess it really based on what your kid’s friends and who are they gonna be with at school. And there shouldn’t be any Chinese language learning as Canada is all based English and kids should able to adopt the English learning environment, just like me🤪 I hope the upon information helps😙
Just to clarify teaching of French in York region ( Richmond Hill, Thornhill, Markham). If you child goes to a Catholic elementary school, they start teaching French in Grade 1.
If we were to look at school ranking / home price / rent ratio. I believe the catchment area of Colonel-By Secondary in Ottawa is probably one of the best value in Ontario. The school is always rank in the top 10 in the province. A single family home in the catchment area can be rent for $2500 per month. And they can still be bought for less than $600,000 even after a 15% appreciation in the last 12 months.
My cousin is coming to Canada to attend high school next year. I don't how good is his English. He only communicate with me in Cantonese when ii visit him in HK. Do you think he is good enough for English 10 or does he need esl?
Despite marks, I think many parents are concern about the bully or even drug abuse in schools. Is it inevitable or is there any tips to pick a school or an area that has minimal occurrence?
To be honest, every schools would have bad students and good students. Even the school I went, Bayview Secondary School has students taking drugs and stuff. It is important to let your kids know what is right and wrong instead of relying on schools too much

我之前有係加拿大揾到個英文老師補習,if needed, I can pass her contact to u

Unless you are moving to Montreal, learning French in HK is not necessary. In Toronto there are lots of schools offering Chinese language learning.

just stick around richmond hill, markham and thornhill area. downtown and midtown toronto high schools are too liberal.

It is better not solely relying on the rankings. The ranks change every year.
thanks for sharing.
Can say some private school?

I found ESL really useless. I was there in grade 5 and 6, and I also found it the same as your wife. I perfected my English with private tutors
🙏🏻
I am
