Jewel is a country artist, and she sang it as a country artist! You could feel the love of her country in her performance. Was it my favorite version of the hundreds I've ever heard? No. Was it my favorite of the hundreds of non-traditional versions I've ever heard? Yes!

Wow! That was one of the most beautiful ways I have ever heard this song performed! With all the commotion I was expecting a messed up Roseanne Barr version so it made me listen and I am so glad I did. Thank you Jewel.
Normally, I like my anthems to be traditional and uptempo but that was freaking great.
It is art and she expressed her version in a creative way and hit all the notes in key
Soulful. Different. Definitely not disrespectful. Hardest song to sing. Everyone struggles and puts their stamp on it. Jewels WS2001 after 911 is the best. Whitney Houston rendition the purest. All bring a tear to my eye.

People who don't perform, don't have the context to factor in. Whether you are singing, acting, telling jokes...in front of an audience? Whatever it may be,it all comes from the same place. It's like rolling dice,and hoping to hit. You put it out there,in hope of it being well received. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. But the motivation is the same. Maybe a song,or a joke bombs? But that's not the intent of the performer. It takes a lot of guts to get up there. And even more to try something unique and different. But keep in mind, whatever your thoughts are,they aren't trying to bomb. They are reaching to a place where nobody has been before. In so doing, when it hits... there's a magical thing that happens that words can't describe. It's a rush. It's better than sex, it's better than any drug. Remember, that's always what they are going whether it's achieved or not
Jewel is a vocal artist not a puppet. Singing folk/country as an artist so this was perfectly refreshing and brilliant. Of course I am not American
I like Jewel's music and I thought that she definitely did it in her own style. I liked Chris Stapletion's version better but her version was heartfelt. I can think of many worse versions including some that didn't know the words.
I liked it. It was not any where near Rosanne or Fergie’s singing. Jewell is an excellent singer on key with a vocal range others cannot achieve. It was a more soulful revision.

I heard one complaint that it was a bit quiet and low-key for the occasion, that a more upbeat rendition might be in order considering we're about to do the Indy 500.
But that's the only complaint I can really understand.

If you don't want JEWEL to sing the National Anthem, don't invite JEWEL to sing the National Anthem. She sang it like the artist she is and did an excellent job. A couple off notes here and there, but overall, very creative. She's an incredibly talented artist. Chris Stapleton sang put his own spin on the song and everybody loved it. Why the double standard?

In my opinion, I don't think she was being disrespectful. I'm a total traditionalist when it comes to the National Anthem. It was written a specific way and that version is the one the US adopted in 1931 (maybe 1916). Even though she did a beautiful job and I do enjoy it, I feel it wasn't the best choice.

WTF?!?!! I don't know who Jewel is but I thought her version of our National Anthem was very nice. I have heard FAR worse, and even disrespectful versions at sporting events. Lady, you do what you do. You deserve the good.❤
I did not like the arrangement. The original instrumental arrangement contains the sound of triumph. That was notably missing from Jewel's rendition.
The anthem is meant to be sung as is. Everyone disrespects it.

I didn't hear it and I'm not going to listen to it just to judge it. All of these people complaining couldn't carry a tune in a wheelbarrow. Nobody compared her performance to Rosanne Barr's legendary screamfest so ,it looks like she got a fifty fifty split. I can live with that.

I agree with several of the comments. Different and not my favorite, but nowhere near as bad as many I have heard. I just wish all that are invited to sing at these huge events would just sing it the way it was written and intended.
The only real problem is that you couldn’t sing along. I thought I’d fit the feeling of Memorial Day. Anyone remember when they let Steve Tyler do it? Now that was bad.
Love it in Jewel fashion. Made nice to listen to. Cant see what the fuss is about ? Shes great Unual special kind of singer . Hear her you know whos singing just like you do when you hear Elvis, J Cash or Dolly. Thats what makes a great singer a unique voice only she or he has . One note or two an you know who it is. Her National A version was great to me . like it ,or not, it is what it is! No way in any shape form or fashion does Jewels compares to Rosanne's version. Roseanne's was a mess horrible spill supposed to been funny but was just plain sickening mess like a pig screaming in the mud .

Well I’m a huge Jewel fan, so I didn’t have an issue with it. I’ve heard about 100 other renditions that were way worse than this. Stop picking on Jewel.

A song as poorly written and constructed as the US national anthem needs to be updated every single time it is performed. I'm no fan of Jewel, but good for her for doing that.
