Now that's what I call high value content! Thank you Ben for all those precious tips. Most vids, even from notorious channels, don't really bring anything. This is very usefull👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much for the kind words! Much appreciated.
Ben, I took your sharing to heart. Went and bought a Sunsun 404B on line and its working great. This last week i didn't hardly see anything in the gravel at all. First time i opened it up after start up. So far a great filter. Thanks for the insight, Dan Martin
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Very helpful in reducing noise.
I think the SunSun are sold over here by All Pond Solutions as they look identical - very cheap but reliable filter and thousands of people use them over here. May be 'Aquatop' in other countries and likely come from the same factory in China.
Ultimately the way a canister filter is set up and the quality of the media will be the deciding factors in how healthy the water is, not how much the filter initially cost.
With any filters you can do a search for "(insert filter name) problems" and a huge list of results will come up for any filter, even the Eheims and noise issues are often easily solved as you usefully explained.
Good video, man.
Thank you Pondguru and yes, I believe that often the complaints that we hear are because of poor media and user error. The three SunSun's I own have run flawlessly and yes I believe that they are Aquatop (and possibly All Pond Solutions as well). All made by the same factory in China. In the U.S. some prefer the Aquatop because it is "UL Approved" but I'm not sure that means much with this product or worth the extra dollars one would pay in the U.S. for an Aquatop.
Pondguru had 3 different all pond solutions, 2 made a racket and 2 leaked (even with new greased o rings) and the one I have atm 1400 model seems ok so far. They keep coming as part of second hand tank set ups I buy and sell. I use it alongside a fluval fx4 on my fluval Roma 240. The power of these budget canisters is greatly exaggerated also
Agree with you completely PondGuru as all depends on the Media you put inside it
Can I use scoria rocks as biological filter and will it affect the efficiency of the Sunsun filter?
The point is they are not reliable and tend to break, be loud and or leak. If they had no issues they would be the best thing since sliced bread but unfortunately, you get what you pay for.
Thank you for this video!
I have two different Eheim filters at the moment, bought them used and broken for the change in my pocket and bought some spares and gaskets so I have two running filters for about $100 combined.
This video give me the confidence to go for a brand new, bigger filter for the same kind of money, that will give extra filter capacity next time I need a new filter.
I will go for a really big tank next time I move, but until then, my Eheim filters will do the job.
Thanks for taking the time. I was researching the sunsuns and watched this and it helped me go ahead and buy one for my 55.
Set it up correctly and it will give you years of trouble-free service. Which model did you go with?
Great tips! I love watching your videos Ben keep up the good work! I have a sunsun302, had it for over 3 years had one new seal and one new impeller there great!
Thank you for sharing. As always very informative video. I followed your advice, bought a sunsun, loving it, no regrets.
Awesome.
Thank you for the video. I have a aquatop forza 7 which was making noises I had not heard before. While watching your video, I realized that during a recent filter change I had over packed it with media. Removed a good handful and it is running great. Thanks again.
It makes me very happy when I hear of someone being helped by one of my videos. Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated.
Great video Ben, I’ve been thinking about getting a sun sun to replace a hob and this vid helped a lot. Thank you 😉👍
I really love the sunun I ran it for years on my tank before I switch to salt water. Great video man 👍🏼
I'm glad to hear this because I just bought a 704b.
Good choice. I love mine, works very well.
Great tips! I have a 304b and 505a and have been quite pleased, with the occasional need to "burp" or re-tighten the fittings on the outtake.
That's been my experience too.
Thanks for stopping by!
Excellent tips. Only a beginner with 20 Gal tank, but this knowledge will come in handy for any external filter.
Thank you Mr. Ochart. Very cool channel here!
Great video, earned yourself a new subscriber. I just bought 2 SunSun HW-704B filters for a new 180 tank going up and I was worried about leaking and all that. I feel a lot better about it after watching this.
wow, tons of great info here Ben! lol the beer 😂
Thank you Anthony.
The beer was even better after the video ;)
Great video, Ben! Appreciate your knowledge!
You're welcome Brian
As a first time canister filter owner (I ordered a sunsun), this video was a great. Very useful. Thank you so much.
You are welcome Zamora, I'm glad that you found it helpful.
Thank you very much!!! And enjoy your beer.
Great video Ben and advice that really can be applied to all canister filters.i,m definitely going to check out sun sun in future
The ending of the video was funny with the beer. thank you! Subscribed to you. Appreciate the information and tips
Thank you!
superbly done Ben! loved it!
This is a great review summarizing and talking about the Sunsun brand, You really pointed out a lot of the issues people have with canisters that happen. It's just normal to have issues. Some people will never have issues, some people have a lot of issues . I've seen videos of fx6 complaints, not as many but every canister or product pretty much is gonna have people complaining. But like you said you just have to troubleshoot and put the time and not be lazy. Sounds like you have a lot of experience in the hobby and knowledgeable. Great job A+ on giving a fair overall review on issues in general with the Sunsun.
s g same here, thanks for watching
Great video Ben, had my aquatop cf 500 for years never had a problem with it, still running till this day
Jose Valladolid Thank you and yes, if you treat them right they provide years of flawless service at a very good price.
Thanks Ben ! I use one 406 and sun sun 304b and work well for the moments. Thank for the advices....saludos
Saludos mi amigo in Honduras.
Excellent job Been! As always. Thanks
You're welcome!
Cant get enough of your vids man, very good advice and healthy beautiful cichlids!!!
Thanks Jay, your support of the channel is noticed and greatly appreciated.
thanks for this. I love my sun sun canister. It's great
In my next video, available on Thurs 7/20/17, I'm doing a complete service on my SunSun 704-B. You might like that video.
I have 2 304B on my 120. And I love em, no issues at all. Love the $$ too.
There certainly are horror stories, but for the most part I usually hear what you said, they run great, do the job and you can't beat the price.
Great video ben last week I serviced my 406B Canister and went to work came home after 12 hours and looked at the tank I saw that I lost about two gallons of water well I guess I did not have the top on right but I love my canister one other tip every six months I will I will put vaseline just A little around the rubber O ring that goes around the Head unit
Great tip that will extend the life of the o ring. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I seen the video title and my heart sank I thought oh crap, I just bought my very 1st canister filter and that is what I bought, the Sun Sun 304B, glad I watched this video
Hey Joseph! I JUST ordered that same model today. It had good reviews on amazon. What do you think about it? I have a 55 gallon heavy stocked fish tank with a turtle.
@@kimberlyd2308 I was scared at 1st too but I absolutely love it I have it on my 120gal and it still more than enough with about 50 cichlids being kept...... Best part is I can let my sunsun go for up to 2 months without cleaning and when it comes time i just take the trays out, rinse them down, rinse the canister itself out as well, pop them back in and its good to go..... Definitely check out bends videos on proper cleaning methods and anything else SunSun though you'll be glad you bought it! happy fishing😁
Great video Ben, agree on all points. I have an Fx6, Fx4, 2 Sunsun 304b's, and an API Filstar and have no complaints about any of them. Canister filters in general simply are not designed to be plug and play units.
Damn good point. We live in a plug and play time and sometimes getting things to work right requires some thought. You should consider doing a YT video that compares each of these units, since you have first hand experience instead of just an opinion based on second hand information.
Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated.
my sunsun 304 lasted five years and then became intermittent, turning on and off. and got the new 704b and what a difference. great tips love the video
Thank you Paul. Yes, that 704b is a beast and I'm really liking mine.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
great tips, I have two 704b on my list and this definitely made me feel better about my choice
Aslo Ben, would you mind telling me the dimensions of your 135. Is it 5' or 6'
Great video. I use a HW 3000, 702, 603 and 602. Agree with you 100%. Using a stainless steel canister now and parito principle applies to all.
great inf video Ben, I have both fx6 & the sunsun 704B, i love my fx6 but if money is an issue for some guys the sunsun is a great filter
Exactly. In my mind it's not a matter of "this is better than that" discussions. It's really more a matter of finding the filter that fits your budget and can do the job.
Also, I wanted to clear up some of the negative rumors about SunSuns. Often the complaints could have been fixed with a little patience.
As always Efrain, thanks for watching and commenting.
Love my SunSun. Been running for almost 3 years w/o a hitch.
Same with mine. Thanks for watching!
I order 1 hw702, hope it will great
Wow! I immensely enjoyed your video and thank you! :)
That's great to hear Forrest. It's comments like yours that keep me at it 😀
I have a 304b. It's works perfectly on my 50 gallon tank. Just got a 55 gallon was going to buy another one now going to buy two for that tank. Thank you..
I love redundancy and back up. I rotate the cleaning of the two units I have on my two main tanks. Makes it less likely to shock the system and provides a back up to keep things rolling if one burns out.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips. Very Good advice. Now I got to get a beer!
LOL, that beer was pretty tasty, even after I swirled the foam around.😀
Thanks for stopping by watching and commenting.
I understand where you're coming from. A lot of people rag on the Ehiem ECCO filters. I've had mine for years and couldn't be happier.
There you go. If it's working for you, doing the job, then it's right for you, and in the end, that's the only person it needs to be right for, right?!
I just bought a 265 with the uv light.. I have it hooked up 2 a 29 gallon tank and it works great and its quite
Thanks for the info, I'm in the process of looking for a canister so this was very helpful. New Subscriber.
Thank you Jadren and good luck with that canister.
just got my 303B for my 29g, so far so good! Slight hum but it's not in the cabinet yet. :P I love your videos!!!!
never had a single issue with 304b in many years. We run 4 of them here... The problem is usually user error and not mechanical with cannisters I have found with peoples issues. Even have had generally good luck with the uv bulbs that I have on 24/7. good vid man. sure the discussion will be good in comments 🍻🦈✌️
Aquariums by Mike I agree Mike, however I have had slight tray erosion.
They won me over when I realized I can have 6 of them or one fx6 lol
I agree. I use my UV on weekends.
I'm gonna keep an eye out but I'm only using my UV on weekends, so maybe that will spare me.
I have also had the tray erosion issue. I stopped using the uv because it seemed to happen close to the bulb
I use a AquaTop 300 which just a re-branded SunSun and I love it!
Essentially the same company. Love my SunSun's, especially the 704-Bs. They're beasts.
The uvc lamps in sunsuns are primarily clarifiers and somewhat level 2 sterilization which works just fine for me so I got no complaints! My lfs instructed me to inspect all fasteners and screws and see if any are loose before setting up the filter, you'd be surprised how often those things can be loosy goosy straight out the box. Anyway Ben your service and dedication to the community is really appreciated by me and others I'm sure!! Thanks!!
48tomw, thank you so much for the input and for the kind words of encouragement.
Love it Ben! I felt like I was watching a history channel interview version of fish keeping with great info though 👍
KG cichlids "Brought to you as a public service with donations from the Gates Foundation..." LOL!
I have a great filter it's a Hydor: it's super quiet, never failed me yet in 3 years and has a strong flow. Best one I've ever owned! hooked to a 72 G. bow front
That's awesome. It's great when something meets our needs and actually performs. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have 2 sunsun 302's for a few years now and never had any problems. I also have a Aquatop cf400uv for 5yrs now and did get some rattling but went away. I will always buy sunsun filters for the rest of my fish tank hobbie life. Great video bud.
Sold. Just ordered 2 of SunSuns to be my back ups for Eheims & also they come with UV lamp build in which is good thing.
I don't think you will be disappointed. Watch a few YT videos on set-up tips and you'll be good to go.
Nice Video Ben. Have a 304 B filter and its a love hate relationship at times for me. Currently down for maintenance because of wear and tear on o ring and a broken UV tube. Don't leave the uv light on 24/7. Just a bad idea. Uv light will run hot and burn out when it doesn't have waterflow to cool it off, not to mention the damage it can do to all the plastics that surround it. Built an inline diy out of PVC for UVC, heater, and Co2 diffusion and it works perfectly for my needs and killed the need for the uv light in canister.
Just bought one of these. Great vid!
Can't beat the price. My 704B is a beast of a filter.
Nice video Ben. That's great that you found ways to fix your sunsun. I just had my first issue with a sunsun I have recently. It is leaking from the gasket. First time I have had an issue with sunsun. Owned these for over a year.
You might be able to get a gasket replacement on eBay or Amazon. Some vaseline can also help.
Thanks
Mr.Ochart..you are right on..I hear nothing but good about the sun sun so I put sun sun canister filters on all of my aquariums 55 and up and they work GREAT!! But here and there i heard people complaining about some of the things that you discuss in your video..I think that we all think that evry thing that we buy should be NO maintenance at all..thats is just being in dream land..but also so far I have no issues with my filters..good video!!thanks
I like my Sun Sun it's a great backup filter in conjunction with other filters. Regarding top of the line filters I'll take an Eheim classic over any other canister filter any day ! 👹
One of these days I'm going to try out an Eheim canister.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
My Eheim 2217 classic is about 14 years old. My 2260 classic is like 17 years old now. They are wonderfully engineered products.
The Eheim classics might need the same manual 'burping' but I find after a short while, it clears itself out though so I never bother.
Nothing like a bucket + a highly engineered german pump. It just works and works.
These filters are fantastic units...you could buy the 304b variant for $75 shipped now...and the pipes come with a frame clip too...it's relatively easy to troubleshoot them too.
Great tips. If i missed it the video sorry for being repetitive but the other thing I found fixes half of the impeller issues is when you check to make sure it's seated and assembled right is to grease it impeller shaft with some petroleum jelly.
I have a 304B running my aquaponics system in the garden. It's in direct sunlight/rain and it's been going strong for the last 15 months. Oh yeah, it also ran on various tanks inside for about 5 years before it went outside and it also sat outside for a year or two before I put it on the aquaponic system.
I seriously think they are one of the best filters ever made. They are indestructible.
As for the uv light, it's what made me put the filter on the ap system to begin with due to the constant green water. 2000 litres (528.3441 Gallons) of water went from green to CRYSTAL clear in about 2 days.
My original plan was to run it till it broke and replace it with a good fluval canister filter. I have 3 aquael uni max 700 running my display tanks inside now. I feel that if I had bought the overpriced filters the shop assistants wanted to sell me, I would have never been able to afford my upgraded tanks.
That's an amazing story. 2 days to clear up that much water is epic. Thanks for sharing this with everyone!
I'm glad you said "stop" because I was on my way to the trash with my sun-sun! Lmao
I'm rather new to the Bobbie but I have a sunsun 304, 404 (i believe the 404 is an updated version of the 304 and a 505 or 504 I can't remember exactly but anyway they have a been running for a little over a year with absolutely no problem. no leaks. no noise. no noticable drop in flow. awesome for the money imo!!
Agree, for the money one can't really complain.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Great tips Ben!
Thank you Martell!
I have 6 SunSun 304 B's I love them
Ben I love your content!
You've helped me in so many ways! My fish appreciate the shared wisdom you've given! 😃
I'm not sure which modle to get the 304, 404 or the 704. Im considering the 704 and after watching this im still undecided. What would you reccomend? I have a 55 gallon currently but will be upgrading to either a 90 gallon or 120 in the future which is why I want to spend the money for a decent filter I can continue to use in the future.
Thank you so much Ben you've been amazing and I appreciate everything you do, I know this video is a bit older but I do hope you see this and can respond. Thanks!
6 years and still running perfect
Over four for me and I have to touch them to feel if they are on because they are so quiet.
7 :) never even had to clean the impeller
4th year on mine now. No issues. I've got a fluval and a marine land as well, done more on those than my sunsun 704b
hi Ben . I like my susun , and is usually a logical reason for noise or leaks . mine had a drip on the out put into tank , fixed that by trimming the little ridge off from the moulding process on the part you push hose on . the tick tick noise turned out to be ceramic rings in verry bottom like you do was tumbling around in water flow. when you fill media baskets make sure the handle goes right down , that way the next basket will fit correctly on top . the biggest difference I find with cheaper canister filters is the quality of the plastic trays and fittings is more flimsy . cheers Ben good video.
Ricardo cichlid Agree on all points, thank you for watching and commenting
got mine sun sun 302.265gph.about a year now. never had issue.but last month when i change the media, forget to put water back in.then push the button over 100time to suck water in .and finally ,it start leaking from the side connet, not really bad, i think it would be fix by change O ring. but who cares it still run.and love it.
your video was very informative as always. I agree with you on the quality of the Sunsun filters. I have used several Sunsun filter's over 5 years now 303b and 304b with UV lamps without any problems what so ever. but the 402b with uv did melt my tray. I replaced the tray only to have it melt the tray again. So I replaced the tray and the uv bulb ...you won't believe this but it melt it a third time . the filter is still being used on my quarantine tank but without a uv bulb in it currently. I did everything to find out what caused this.
Damn frustrating. I wonder if the base of the UV, where it screws in, is just slightly tilted causing the bulb to be at an angle and touch the tray?
Were all the trays melted or just the top or bottom tray?
the top tray melted the first time. The second trays melted the second and the third time around. Like I said there were no issues with my other 4 Sunsun canister 304b & 404b
Loved your video.new sunsun owner here😄
Thank you for watching.
Yep i have a magnum 350 on my 55 its a great filter but it is a pain to get the air out and get it to run quietly.
I have 3 sunsun canister filters, and 2 other types of sunsun filters. They are noisier than other brand filters that I have. They work great, one melted down on the inside, im guessing it was the uv bulb. Baskets, and media bags were melted. I replaced that unit with an fx6 but i still run the other ones, and plan on using the melted one after i get some new baskets. Just my experience with the brand.
Hi Ben, in other comments I've already thanked you for your excellent videos on filters, including this one. I was hoping to not be in the group who has a buzzing Sunsun 304, but it seems I am. I've gone through all your tips (two or three times) plus trying other things, yet still have a rattle/buzz. I have a single 304 on my 53 gallon in my living room display tank, and love the size of the trays packed with bio media. On my 30 gallon tanks I've got Fluval 207s, and they are really quiet, and you can adjust the flow. If I go with two Fluval 307s on this tank I can probably fit all the media from the 304, have adjustable flow, and quiet in my living room. I like the idea of the redundancy anyway.
Sorry to hear about that buzzing. It can be real annoying. Sounds like you have a plan!
Mine made it 10 years with only needing 2 pump head o-ring replacements and 2 impellers. I recently had to replace it due to the magnetic field in the impeller housing becoming weak and killing flow. I paid $60 back in 2010 and I think I got my moneys worth!
$6 a year, LOL, that's a bargain! I had to change an impeller because I dropped it and broke off one of the blades. The replacement was better build, bigger blades.
Thank you so much. Last clip though 🍻
My Sunsun "joint of dirtiness" failed. The night before I was leaving on a flight overseas for 3 weeks. I guess it was lucky it didn't happen the next day!
Very helpful video , great job
Glad you think so!
I have an FX6 on a 125gal African Cichlid tank with 22 fish and love how much water that beast moves and how clear the water is, I service that filter once a month only to swap the polishing pad and to see how the sponges are doing. Just recently picked up a SunSun 704B for a 75 gal South American Cichlid tank which has 2 Electric Blue Acars, 2 albino Oscars (3” each) 4 Polar Blues and a fresh water Barracuda and so far really like how it moves the water, keeps the water clear and is pretty quiet. Haven’t looked inside of it yet since I set it up only 2 weeks ago but I am interested in seeing how the bio and chem filtration looks after a month or so. Highly recommend both brands and using the pond guru videos to set up the filters.
Good advice. Thanks.
Thank you William.
Never had a problem with noise or anything else and I have a few sunsun 404B's and they're great. Can you show me how you have your spray bars and intakes with two canisters on one tank or are you using a duck bil on one.. Thanks for Videos I've learned a lot from you.
Thank you Paul.
I don't use the spray bars but instead use both outputs (fluval fx6 & sunsun 704b) on the right side pointed slightly up to create water motion and surface tension break-up (for the release of bad gas and introduction of oxygen) and the fluval intake, along with a SunSun dual headed powerhead (1800 gph), are on the left side. Things are kept in suspension with all the water motion until one of the intakes sucks it up.
I also stir up the sand and vacuum every week or two using a traditional Aqueon system or the vacuum system that comes with the fluval.
Very informative, thanks
You are welcome and I'm glad that you found it informative.
My SunSun had the top seal leak which I fixed with cleaning the mateing surface and a new seal but also the UV light seal leaked and corroded the bulb connection and burnt out the bulb. Cleaned up the mess and replaced the seal, tube and bulb but I'm a tad Leary to even turn on the UV now. I also keep the filter in a cut down plastic tub to contain any future leaks. And yes mine gives out a constant hum. Have to try to work on that more though.
I have one SunSun 304b and an AquaTop which is basically the same canister under a different brand name. Both of them have been non stop running since 2013 with no issues whatsoever! Awesome products that keep the water in my thanks Cristal clear with good parameters. The best you can get for what you pay!
I agree! Thank you for watching.
Question, Couldn't you use a Aqua Lifter on the output side(tap into the output line), to prime it?
great video Ben
Thank you Cooper.
Temperamental at 1st But once you know what to do they're great. My 4 been purring for 3+ years.
Ei Pi Agree, still one of the best bargains in the hobby!
Thanks for watching!
i bought 2 sunsun 404b because you said that sunsun is good, i had them both for less than 2 months and in the same day of calening them they both started leaking everywhere
Hi Ben what media do you use in that last basket in the canister? bio balls, biohome or ceramic rings, other? also where are a couple of sources for tank backgrounds? yours looks awesome!
Hello Hunter, The background I'm using is a "Rocky" thin from Universal Rocks in Texas. If you order from them use the Jay Wilson discount code at checkout. It will save you, I believe, 15%.
Regarding the canister set up, check out my Canister Maintenance playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLr8ew8o8WXoA-6pu7lFTc_D6idLKGCE2j
About the UV light. It should be enough to run it for 24h a week. So set an appointment in your phone for every week and run it like friday afternoon till the saterday afternoon.
That should be enough to kill the wrong bacteria.
Good tip. Someone mentioned that the uv would help clarify the water but not kill much because the water is moving too quickly past the light? I would run it on weekends but have it off the rest of the time. I did notice better water quality after running it.
Nice concise information. Thumbs up
Thank you MPWALL!
I have two 302's on a 55 gallon (actual water volume approx. 45g). Initially I had them hooked up in series with a CO2 reactor. I was only getting 140 gph out of them together. I then hooked them up separately. The filter with the reactor gets about 80 gph, and the other puts out 140. The trays aren't overloaded. They have a course sponge, filter floss, and lava rock - and I've purged it - which you really have to do after water changes. No noise or leaks are evident. I just wish I had more flow was higher. I have a Penn Plax rated for 265 gph on my 30, and puts out much more flow.
Great video very informational
lil fire I’m glad you found it helpful
Silicone oil is a great benefit for canister filters, Stops noise an makes impeller shaft last much longer along with seals and cheap to buy. Silicon oil is safe for your fish to... hope this helps peeps. Great video sir. I have to say i have never had a problem as of yet with any of my canister filters. So in my eyes its the user or a defect.
Great tip and I agree 100%.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
I bought one of the 4 tray ones, the UV died fairly quickly which I'm not concerned about, what does pose an issue is that it leaks if it's not running, so in a powercut or if I switch it off to do a power change. I can stop this leaking if I'm there, by lifting the lock off lever but not removing the hoses. It's like the seam/gasket can't hold up to the pressure if theres no flow.
I believe you can buy that small section and replace it? Check it out on eBay or Amazon. Might save you some aggravation (and some wet floors).
Can I use scoria rocks as biological filter and will it affect the efficiency of the Sunsun filter?
Would you be able to do a review on the sunsun hw 5000?
Would you recommend the 704 or an FX6 ?
I love my Sunsun 303b. Honestly, for the price, I got it for $60 CAD was a steal and the build quality in my opinion is really good. I do not know why people are complaining that it is so cheap in terms of quality as it seems like if you know what you are doing it won't break. I mean come on it is no Rolls Royce or anything.
Thanks Ben
My hw5000 drain out valve comes off very easily. Just a slight tug and it falls off. Am i missing something?
