    40 years of fear of the deep end after at least five swimming classes. My desire to certify SCUBA diving lead me back to the swim class. Treading water is my last badge of honor. I am close😊

      Thank you for the comment and welcome to the channel. The MOST unfortunate part is that I hear your story way too frequently - I am working with a client in our home area of Puerto Rico right now who had 10 instructors - a major failure of our entire industry, no doubt.
      ---
      Remember the keys to learning:
      1. NEVER push past fear. We have to learn to "BE" with the water - this is only accomplished with breathing and relaxation techniques [meditation]
      2. 80% of learning to tread is relaxation ONLY 20% is technique. Spend your time out of the water in preparation with relaxing.
      3. You do NOT need to do egg beater to succeed. A simple relaxed flutter does the trick just fine.
      Please keep us updated on your progress and how we can support you! YOU GOT THIS!

    Best video on Treading, ever. It is amazing how so many so called instructors don't teach you any of this. You are the only one who focussed on "air in the lungs" and especially the sitting like a chair thing. I wish I could learn from you in person.

      Thank you for commenting and for your kind words. It is true, as an industry we have a real problem - most swim instructors are entry level jobs and have very little knowledge [taught or learned] on the theory side of learning [how to create buoyancy, water properties, emotion regulation etc]. so they teach only about 30% of "solution" - [the mechanics].
      ----
      We are VERY close to launching a new community where you can have direct access to me and Coach Meredith and in addition, we WILL have in person learning in Puerto Rico [1 week program] later this year!
      ----
      In the meantime, how can I help you further?

    I have been watching swimming videos for a couple of weeks on RUclips, this one is the best so far. I can see how much work you guys did to make this video with all details, I can’t learn these techniques from community drop in swimming classes and nobody spends this much time to explain details in the pool. It is very helpful to watch it over and over right before I go to the pool. This channel deserves much more subscribers for sure ❤

      Hi Nataliefan1812 - Thank you so much for the comment and for supporting the channel. A BIGGER congratulations on taking the steps necessary to learn how to swim. Unfortunately, I agree with your assessment of community drop in swimming lessons - they do not specialize in how to actually teach an adult to "BE" in the water - they mostly teach technique. The difficulty is that IF we are too tense or nervous then all the technique in the world does not support us swimming.
      What are you currently working on and how can we support your progress best?
      Thank you again and remember, NEVER give up, you WILL learn how to swim!

    Having watched so many clips of treading water I really think yours is the BEST. You take your time to explain every single details of each movement and “why” and that I think would help the viewers to understand completely the steps that they should follow.
    In this video the beginners won’t be scared of getting drowned or panicked because you show from the safe shallow level of water to the deeper through the process of moving arms, legs.
    It’s EXCELLENT and thank you very much 🌺🌺

      Do show more of what treading water does, how different arm movements help one propel in the pool, how breathing and swimming is coordinated as a beginner. I experienced very painful leg cramps hours after my swim lesson at night and the pain was so excruciating that I couldn't move! Any tips for a beginner are appreciated. I learn better with logic given for every movement. I started others with egg beater method at my third lesson! Thank you.@@caribeswim

      @@caribeswim good question, i guess just the coordination/timing of kicking with breathing, and i want to learn to surf :-)
      One thing that’s interesting to me is during all the swimming lessons I ever did growing up (through school, and outside), we were never taught to tread water 👀 and it never occurred to try learn it till now, realising it’s absolutely fundamental to being in the water, possibly more so than swimming itself??

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Год назад +1

      You are right - treading water is rarely apart of organized swim lessons at ANY level and there is a good reason for that - it is HARD to teach BECAUSE most programs do not take the time to learn the fundamentals of how to interact in the water - i.e. relaxation and breath control. Without these principles in place, you cannot learn treading water so it is my belief & experience that programs will just avoid this all together! SO AMPED you have decided to learn it because YES, it is easily the most important aspect of learning to swim. I mean, when we are in our community pools, oceans, lakes, are we swimming freestyle? For 98% of us the answer is no, we are treading water or some variation of that!

      @@caribeswim So, I tried again! It really helped practicing breathing and seeing how that affected my buoyancy. I am able to swim in a rudimentary way, but I can't tread water, so it's hard to be in the water for long. I used your techniques and found I could keep my face above water with minimal effort, but I always end up on my back with the back of my head in the water. I know staying upright is not that important, as you say, but I am basically doing a back breaststroke with my legs pulled up in a chair position. And I am moving backwards. Not sure if you have any advice for that.
      Anyway, I will keep trying and thanks so much for helping me gain some confidence through the buoyancy exercises. I went into the deep end about 7 or 8 feet from the wall, stayed as long as I could, and then swam back. That is big progress for me!

    Larry, you never covered the fact that, for some, body density can completely override a "100%" inhale. In other words, some folks can take a legitimate 100% inhale (meeting your definition) and still hang out at the bottom of the volume of water (pool, river, lake, etc.). These folks will always struggle more with treading water. As well, they typically do not require a weight belt when scuba diving...even with a wetsuit! Nevertheless, thanks for making this video. I should be helpful for most.

      Hi Daveray - thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel. You are correct that body composition [fat / muscle ratio] is one of 4 factors that has influence on a new swimmers ability to swim or tread water. However, taking a deep breath is not the only overriding factor that allows this person to either float or sink [as you mentioned above]. For most beginning adults relaxation is the most critical factor in that equation. I also do not believe that teaching a blanket theory that: "some of you will just be natural born sinkers" is an appropriate theory, especially when we are talking about water. I believe it is essential that we first MAXIMIZE our relaxation in our mind, body, and breath, then learn to take a diaphragmatic breath, then learn the proper technique, then discuss our body composition.

    Thanks Coach Jeff, this was really good. I’ll probably need to watch it another 10 times before I practice but this is good. I do have 2 questions: Why does my head sit halfway in the water while fluttering? (I have to lain my head back just to breath and you don’t have too) Why do my legs keep eventually going in the same direction with egg beater? (Coordination issues)

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Год назад +1

      Hi @Deangelo! Glad you like it and yes, this is certainly a style you will need to watch a bunch to extract all the value. I hope you can see why it was delayed so much, was a big undertaking. With that said:
      1. If you have any video clips of you doing this you can send to my email: Jeff@caribeswim.com. If you don't want to do that then I think it most likely is just around the efficiency of your kick. Are you feeling like you are kicking hard?
      ---
      2. Egg beater same direction - yes, this is a practice thing. Honestly, mine want to do that too, I have had 2 back surgeries due to nerve issues in my spine so my left leg is hard to do what I want it to do. Keep in mind, optimizing technique is NICE but our primary goal is always just to complete the movements the most relaxed we can while achieving our goal of breathing.

I was kicking kinda hard and it tired me but for the most part I think I was kicking properly (I was buoyant) but I tired after 2 minutes and went to a flutter kick. I also tried for the breaststroke kick but that tired me even faster. I will see if I can get someone to record the next time I do it. I think I may just need to to slow the kick down like I did with the flutter kick but when I slow down panic sets in haha. I’ll keep at it you have helped alot. Rest up, you deserve it

      Thank you for the comment! Great question - I generally think this has more to do with your relaxation and breath control than technique. Make sure you are 100% relaxed and able to take a big deep breath to inflate and fill your lungs. From there, whichever kick helps you maintain that relaxation - probably a scissor kick or egg beater if the technique is something you do efficiently.

    In your eggbeater, you make circles coming forward thru center and outward---what I would call outward circles. Most of the other videos I see on treading water do inward circles. Outward seems much easier for my legs, but is one way better than the other???

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  7 месяцев назад

      Hi - great comment and welcome to the channel - when we are learning how to tread water with egg beater, you ALWAYS want to do what comes most natural and then progress into more technical. It is easiest to start away from egg beater with flutter kick. From there, whichever movement direction is most natural is where to start.

    Hey, can you explain me and make video just about breathing?
    Becaus for beginers this is big thing.
    Please explain how much to breathe while swimming.
    Someon say exhaled, 60-80%-100% capacity, there is not much to argue about, but how much to inhale?
    Breathe into the lungs as you normally do when walking (let's say it's 100%)?
    Or fully inflated lungs (200%)?
    Thank you for any answer or making video. :)

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  2 месяца назад +1

      Great question - you want to inflate as much as is possible and comfortable. The breath should originate from diaphragm not chest >> You can gain around 300% more air with a Diaphragmatic breath.
      More air in lungs is better...
      When you exhale, you want to exhale around 50 - 75% but its not a hard rule... we do NOT exhale 100% as new swimmers as it comes at a major cost to our buoyancy.

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Год назад

      Thank you for the comment! I do not think being in that position is necessary a bad one as the water can usually help off set some of the weight of your head. Most of the time, that will have to do with the angle of your leg kick - if you want to offset it, you can intentionally lean more forward in the movement or use your sculling motion of your arms to counteract the backward force.

    This is not a good video to learn egg beater. The technique demonstrated is poor and inconsistent. The coach surprisingly claims that the rotational direction of the kick doesn't matter. As mentioned by other comments he doesn't use the same technique when teaching and when actually going in the deep end. The general analysis of the egg beater kick is very shallow, which is disappointing for a 45 minutes video.
    The video can however be of interest for people who cannot swim at all or have water-associated trauma. The first half of the video presents a solid holistic approach to getting comfortable in the water and learning to float. The second half of the video is a waste of time.

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  23 дня назад

      Thank you for your feedback and the willingness to sit through the entire video for your review.
      It is very possible that I am not the best instructor with teaching that particular technique but I also do not recommend egg beater for the intended viewer of this or any of my educational learn to swim videos.
      As a competitive swimmer of 25 years if the movements are poor and inconsistent for me, it makes me question entirely the likelihood of a brand new swimmer learning and coordinating the movements efficiently. The emphasis of the video was to ensure new swimmers have options and know that egg beater is not the only one!

      Thanks again for you analysis and wish you luck with your swimming.
