  • People moving here from California like crazy but, is it really that special? A deeper look proves its really not all that different than many other towns in the region.

You spent almost 17 minutes driving around the northern part of the loop around Tyler. You didn't show any of the city itself, or the nicer neighborhoods (like Cumberland Estates)... the south side of Tyler is a much nicer part of the city. Tyler has pretty much any thing you want regarding shopping and restaurants... and excellent healthcare facilities. There are several city parks... Rose Rudman has a very nice hiking trail. Faulker and Lindsey parks have very good mountain bike trails. Unfortunately, a LOT of people have moved to Tyler of the past several years, so traffic, particularly on the loop and on Broadway, has become very frustrating. And the cost of housing has increased considerably. And it's true... the religious folk living there can be a bit self-righteous. Although I don't live there anymore, I found it a good place to live.

You know what many people are moving to Tyler because they hate what they are coming from. Tyler is set in its ways and that’s okay. Some outsiders want to change Tyler as a whole. Then get offended when their mindsets and thoughts are not accepted.

You seem to be overly critical of some places. The world doesn't revolve around you, every place is different and you should try to see the good in every place as well as the not so good. There is no perfect place. Why not just enjoy your travels and be more positive because not everybody can afford to travel whenever or wherever they want to. It's all good.

Small towns, country towns are laid back. There is no rush whatsoever. That's the way it is in the country. Most people are retired. Young people have no major motivation their upbringings are laid back being taught by their parents. Maybe those that move there are looking for a slower paced lifestyle. Maybe they grew in a fast-paced environment and now are looking for something a little different. Depending on where they are from going into a small town there is also an air or feeling that it's safer in the country. It can be nice if you don't over think it.

Tyler is a nice city if you stay south of downtown. We here in Texarkana think it's bougie as hell. They get a Torchy's Tacos and we get jealous lol. Tyler has grown REALLY quickly in the last 25 years too. I would definitely live there if I had to.

Not sure if you figured it out, but when you turned right that was a wrong turn. If you had continued straight another 100 yards or so, you would have hit 271. No need to drive the back roads to get from one big town to the next. We've been the the Tyler area for 15 years now. Overall, we're glad we moved here. But, we've definitely encountered some of the problems you mentioned, like snobbery and bullying. The "Holier-than-thou" faux Christians here really take the cake.

That's another thing that bothers me as a life long Texan. People from other states move here. Hate it and end up going back. The schools are so small here and it's being overpopulated. Do they know how tx is? It's not Cali at all. There are no palm trees, celebrities, mountains....its all flatland lol. Cattle and horses. Fields. Maybe the cities are ok but not really. As I native Californian I can speak from experience that those fleeing California to places like Tyler, Texas mostly aren't pretending. They tend to be the sort of people to already drive a big pickup truck for example. They are leaving the Golden state because they DON'T fit in here so well anymore (though we actually still have a lot of big trucks in our suburbs and small towns, that's everywhere now) and they are gladly assimilating to Texas ways.

As a sixth generation Californian, it has nothing to do with 'fitting in'. It has everything to do with how deeply dysfunctional and corrupt California has become. The combination of single-party rule with the general apathy and ignorance of the typical California voter is a toxic mix. 40% of Los Angeles Country is on Medicaid. Our K12 schools rank near the bottom now. We have the highest poverty rate when adjusted for cost of living. Our taxes are off the charts, only to pay for trains to nowhere and tens of billions in unemployment fraud during COVID. I'm old enough to have known California when it was the envy of the country.

I spent a good several months in the Tyler area, Smith County. 1979-82 Working and going to school. Loved the climate and friendly people, over all. Coming from British Columbia I'd never seen that kind of poverty contrasted by Texas money. No one seems to mention the black population, mainly in N Tyler. Like many towns in the south Tyler houses two distinct socioeconomic worlds, and I might add there are very high numbers of Caucasians living in poverty.
There's three cultures Caucasian, African American and Hispanic. Like many towns in Texas there's a division and you better stay in your own lane. So what kind of Texas town is Tyler? Like many others in the State. In a time warp and severely out of touch.
It reflects on this drive though.
Summary - Tyler is a dump!
