What Happens If We Fill Diesel In a Petrol Engine or Petrol In a Diesel Engine? | Hindi

- If by mistake you fill wrong fuel in your vehicle like petrol in diesel engine vehicle or diesel in petrol engine vehicle it will effect the engine very badly.
1. Diesel in petrol vehicle-
Petrol engine works on evaporation of fuel(petrol) in carburetor and forming an air-fuel mixture. What happens if we put diesel in carburetor?
As we know that flash point of diesel is 50 °C and that of petrol is −40°C and carburetor is at room temperature i.e. 30 °C so petrol can easily evaporate in carburetor to mix with air but it’s not the case in diesel.
So what happens when we put diesel in a petrol engine?
Diesel will not be able to form vapor in carburetor. This will not allow a mixture of diesel vapor with air to form. So there will be no air-fuel mixture. There will be only air going in cylinder with no fuel so there will be no combustion at all.
But what if you are running the engine for a long distance? Let's assume that the car has been running for 100 km . So now the whole engine is very hot. Now if you put diesel in such a hot engine system, then temperature of the whole system would be greater than 50 °C. This allows diesel to evaporate, so there will be air-fuel mixture. But the performance would not be as desirable because the engine was designed for petrol and not for Diesel. That's why you can see some people saying that diesel can work in petrol engine.
2. Petrol in diesel vehicle-
Diesel engine is a compression ignition engine. The engine is designed in such a way that after compression stroke the compression is high enough to generate a temperature greater than the auto-ignition point of fuel. Here the actual fuel is diesel and the ignition point of diesel is 245 °C so after compression the temperature will be somewhere around 260 °C (when engine is cool, not when it's running).
So what would happen if we put petrol instead of diesel? The temperature would not be high enough to cause auto ignition of petrol (whose ignition point is 285 °C). So the engine will not start.

Very Very interesting and knowledgeable information.
Sir, I have seen this happen.
But luckily the owner came to know of this blunder at petrol pump it self.
With the help of petrol pump owner a mechanic was called and petrol tank was removed completely and thoroughly cleaned and fit back again with minimum damage to the engine and minimum cost. In another case due to lack of information and knowledge, the owner was duped, the vehicle was towed to the garage and was told that the engine has to be ' downed '. The ' badmaash ' garage owner just removed the fuel tank cleaned it and flushed it and charged the owner for engine work. This is why watching videos on your channel make us aware of various automobile related issues and improves our knowledge.

I was in a long road trip (4k+ kms) and was driving while my friend was taking care of refueling.. he missed observing the attendant while he filled petrol in my diesel car with about 80 kms range left in a 40 litre engine (avg approx. 16 kmpl).. the car drove to our hotel some 800m away..
the next morning the car didn't start at all.. thinking it was due to cold start I kept cranking and it failed to start.. I would have tried 5-6 times.. it did start for some time but was making cracking and spluttering sound.. silly me didn't realise there could be a problem.. then albeit late it dawned there could be a problem and I stopped cranking the engine.. got it towed to a service centre where the fuel was drained and new diesel fuel was filled.. the car started and I drove it back home some 800 kms away.. what could have gone wrong or I was lucky that it didn't cause any damage? I love my car crazy! thanks

Minute amount of fuel will not affect its working much. But due to incomplete combustion white smoke will form.
