I would add the first battle in Final Fantasy 2. You literally get one hit killed one at a time by them the INSTANT you begin the game (and this game predates the entire list by decades).
Final Fantasy IV has a scene where your main character is challenged to a duel by an ex-party member. Playing as the party leader solo, you normally die in three or so hits. The game developers gave your opponent 65,000 HP in an attempt to make it impossible for the player to win, but if you level grind the main character enough, it actually is possible to win, though it will be a long battle. If you do manage to beat your former ally, the game continues as if you had lost that battle, because you were simply not supposed to win.
1:14 During one of my playthrough of Far Cry 5, I was attacked right outside one of the settlements, surrounded by allies, and still got “captured”. Very infuriating.
Oh you hit the nail on the head for far cry 5. I got so annoyed when I was doing strafing runs with a plane bombarding a base, but then suddenly they say oh no you've been gassed and captured when I was no where near smoke
When that first happened to me I got angry enough to spoiler myself on the game and after finding out how pointless my actions in the game would be I just stopped.
Peasant's Quest has a lot of fun with being unwinnable. Even if you manage to avoid the various bizarre ways the game has to kill you off, actually completing your quest to get revenge on Trogdor only ends with you discovering he's indestructible and then being very anti-climactically burninated.
The endless, unwinnable fight at the end of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is absolutely incredible. I had even heard about it before playing but forgot in the moment. The slow realization of what's going on as the enemies just keep coming is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.
It’s Jules, babbbyy! How about a list of video games based on books? A list of the best games based on books would lead a lot of gamers to read more about their favorite games.
Deep cut: Below the Root for the Commadore 64. Technically the 4th story after a book series of 3, despite featuring zero combat, it's considered one of the first Metroidvanias.
Just to let you know in Baldur’s gate 3 if you pass all of the dice checks against the elder brain, especially the 99 ones with nat 20’s, the elder brain will get hit with a 10 percent damage penalty when you actually get to fight it
'South Park: Stick of Truth' The elves did warn you that you will not win this fight. I mean you can defeat them in a fight, however they will still knock your character out and drag them back the elven fortress. LOL
The final level in the first episode of the original Doom has you go up against two Barons of Hell before teleporting into a sealed room that gradually saps your health as you're surrounded by a bunch of zombies and imps who are also attacking you. There's no way out other than dying, but the ending plays and makes it sound like you won.
The first encounter with Desann in Jedi Outcast. It's very brief, but if memory serves it takes place before you get your lightsaber, so Desann just force-pushes you around and deflects your blaster fire; you can't touch him, and eventually he just leaves.
Bit of a mixup with the god of war entry 😅 the third game starts with kratos heading for Olympus to kill zeus, but the second game starts with him as the active god of war, coming down to help his spartan army take over rhodes
Honorable mention to those darn Lightfoot Tests and the Test of Fear in Krazoa Palace from StarFox Adventures, including the electric floor puzzle in Ocean Force Point Temple! I didn't get that far in the game to the Test of Fear, but I've seen people complete those Krazoa Tests! Tug-o-War in Lightfoot Village was a MAJOR PAIN! I don't think I beat that once!
If you mean that button mashing pushing contest against musclefoot, yeah i never beat him. I get him to the edge then he just pushes back not stopping. Wore out my controllers A button redoing it so much
@@shadowotter3116 Yeah. I meant that button mashing contest against Musclefoot. You didn't make it either? And your controller's A button got wore out? Yikes! When I did it on my first try, I kept mashing the A button and my thumb started to hurt! I think I was stuck on that for days. Never did finish it, so I returned StarFox Adventures at GameStop.
On this same note: Half-Life 1 Apprehension mission. It's just part of the game's storyline. No other option than to walk into the room heading to the exit and you're done. GTA San Andreas The Green Sabre. Complete the mission, Officer Tenpenny will send you straight to Mt. Chiliad in the middle of nowhere. Also the first battle with Charon in God of War: Chains of Olympus. Someone else mentioned it in the comments.
In GoW 2, Kratos was not headed to Mt. Olympus at all in the beginning. He went to join his Spartan troops at Rhodes to deliver the final blow in the war. He went after Olympus once he joined with the Titans on a new quest for revenge. Do your research guys.
1:25 Kind of a tradition by now to have the Lich King be unbeatable in the first go-round. The rarest of all Unwinnable battles must be the Puzzle genre- in Tetris Attack, Bowser shows up early on and quickly buries you, being much better at executing combos and chains than any other opponent. Even in the final battle (Hard Mode only, natch), he's nerfed so you can actually win, though it's still an uphill struggle.
I could've sworn I heard that really good players can win that mid-game Bowser match in Tetris Attack. In fact I always assumed that the real final battle was that same level of difficulty, and that the game was throwing this at me halfway through to remind me that there was still a lot to learn. Speaking of unbeatable Bowsers, the one at the beginning of Paper Mario well deserves a mention. Once Bowser uses the Star Rod on himself he becomes invincible, proceeds to roast Mario with fire breath and sends him crashing down to earth to land in Goomba Village. You spend the rest of the game gathering the seven Star Spirits to give Mario enough power to fight Bowser.
Baldurs gate 3 made me realize that no matter how hard you try to fight a boss... you just might not win at all. I tried over 15 times to fight the elder brain and i still havent beaten it
I never played it. Only 1 2 3 and odst for me. 1 was my favorite and firefights with friends on odst was cool. Never got around to playing the other halo games
The funny thing about zomboid is that it was possible to survive the tutorial...but you turn into a zombie after everything it did. You ARE infected after all and that means it was over from the vary start.
At the beginning of Hero & Daughter, the hero, Ralph, is tricked into drinking a potion that drops his Level to 1 and caps it there. In his anger, he lashes out at the guard who gave it to him, starting a fight you can't even come close to winning. Forced to go after the Dark Lord anyway, he travels to the island where the Dark Lord's castle is found, only to find that he needs to gather the three elemental stones to dispel a barrier first. He enters the easiest area first in hopes of grinding, but finds he can't even defeat a Poison Slime and two regular Slimes. Two unwinnable fights for the price of one! This results in him being summoned to a pub where a summoner gets him his first party member and the means to gain more, but that's not what this list is about.
Another un-winnable fight in a “God of War” game is the first battle with Charon in “God of War: Chains of Olympus.” One that wouldn’t technically qualify for this list is the first battle with Ridley at the very beginning of “Super Metroid.” Because it actually is winnable; just damn tough.
The Ridley fight IS won, Ridley chooses to run with his tail between his legs with the baby Metroid, and he doesn't defeat Samus, I've played Super Metroid way too many times to remember that much. It's not meant to be winnable by character death, you only have to survive the fight until you get to your plot-appointed physical amnesia or whatever the term is lol
How about games that made you backtrack/ load old saves to get items/quests/ faster routes you missed and found out later on. Could be great things worth it or a waste of time. I was just playing resident evil 2 remake, loading save game after another, to get (what i felt) perfect runs with puzzles and items. That was a different kind of one for me.
I actually rolled a natural 20 on my first try against the mother brain, but the game ended up glitching after and i had to reload the save before it. couldn't get it again.
Another unwinnable fight would be Zack's last stand in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7. Even if you can one-shot the enemies you have to lose to advance the game.
6:51 technicly you can 'win' this fight but the game wont progress till you die, if you are really good you can kill enough enemies that they will stop spawning till you leave the cell and come back again (you have to go back into the tavern and leave again) its hard, but if you are really luck yand good you can do it, but again its rather pointless as the game will not progress untill kain dies

HM Lunar Sliver Star Story. The first time you fight Ghaleon you are supposed to LOSE. Even if you CHEAT with Unlimited Health you will never beat him and the fight will go on FOREVER.

I'm okay with something happening in a cutscene - I get it, sometimes you just have to move the plot along - but when they fake it that you have a chance, that just sucks. Yeah Final Fantasy V was bad about this. You never knew when you were supposed to fight and when you were supposed to lose, so you could waste valuable supplies in a battle you were not meant to win.
I have a serious question for serious and hardcore gamers, im a dad, and play games for an hour or 2 on weeknights after the kids go to bed, and maybe a few hours more on weekends, its hobby to me like its supposed to be for the average person not a lifestyle. Yes I played more before kids but had other hobbies but thats all besides the point, why are turn based games making a comeback do people really enjoy them as much as streamlined combat? Im currently enthralled with Veilguard and think DA has improved the combat with every subsequent entry, believe the best thing FF did was embrace the real time tactical system, and enjoyed the Pillars Of Eternity games bc they could be real time instead of turn based, the only games I play with that system are either old school or have to be bc they derived from board games like Warhammer Mordheim, I hate Baulders Gate gameplay and prefer playing real D&D with my friends. So long story made longer why are they making a comeback? Does the new hardcore generation of gamers really prefer it? And shouldnt story driven games also have really visceral enjoyable combat like The Witcher series, Dragons Dogma, Dragon Age, Assassins Creed Valhalla ( a series I truly believe regressed with Mirage bc the only option being stealth sucked). I thought the whole point of turn based games were system limitations at the time that couldnt support showing full on battles am I wrong?
I'm not sure why that myth persists, but turn-based combat wasn't due to limitations. The developers designed it specifically to recreate the TTRPG experience in a video game.
