Many of our nation's mentally ill will not even seek help, because they are in fear of how they will actually be treated. They should be helped, not punished or tortured. This breaks my heart.
Fact of the matter is the mentally ill, homeless, elderly, and mentally challenged often wind up receiving very little treatment or they get treated very poorly.
Complete reform is necessary here in the United States (US). As a Master's Forensic Psychology major, I have an opinion about the mentality of, us, here in the US. What gives us the right... Honestly to throw those, we should be protecting, into cages over and over again....One man is no more superior to the other!! Just not acceptable!
I am a social worker who used to work 16 hours a month in a prison. This is institutional criminal to house people who need a hospital. There has never been treatment available in prison.
When I was psychotic and manic, they pepper sprayed me, put me in the chair, locked me in my cell in medical 23 hours a day. I was taken off all my psychotropic meds for a month and not allowed out of my cell with other inmates. When I did have the one oppertunity to be by mistake of the guard's, I loved it, i talked with the other girls and felt normal rather then isolated, alone and suicidal. I self medicate and use drugs. I get it though, if people are going to keep going off there meds and then kill someone they have to be held accountable. I was. I committed a battery charge cause I wasnt taking one of my meds. You send a murderer to a psychward, then when they get out and there non compliment again... They murder or comitt another crime. We should bring back hospitals for criminals.. Like hospitals for the criminally insane. That way they are focused around helping just the mentally ill
There's more to it then that. Ronald Reagan while governor of California was one of the biggest advocates for closing psychiatric facilities to curb State spending. Other State Governors followed his example with NO thought for the repercussions behind this action. Here arrives the increase in Prison populations & expanded instances of Homelessness! Where did they plan for these people to go?? Sadly, they didn't CARE! I remeber this so well because I was living in Northern CA when it occurred.

As a disabled veteran I have been diagnosed with numerous mental health disorders over the past 40 years in 2014 and I was diagnosed with PTSD schizoaffective disorder and dissociative identity disorder the care for veterans with mental illness is extremely poor the va mental health system diagnoses veterans with mental health issues and refuse to treat disorders I am enraged with the psychiatrist who I have had to deal with at the va hospital where I live I believe I have been red flagged by the va because I filed complaints with the patient advocate a formal complaint with the inspector general of department of veterans affairs. I asked my congressional rep to advocate for me and they did nothing to help me and the politicians wonder why veterans are killing themselves. The va mental health system has people who are not doing there jobs some of them are sadistic.
Would be nice if their was more Doctors and Nurses for these people . Some kind of Special Housing Programs to help them live on their own ..Special Programs to help them taking care of some of their own Daily Needs ,Such as Shopping Cooking Bathing Themselves , This needs to be done all over the World ,Not just in the USA . But locking these People up .And Guards beating these People is Not Right to do

Medical service and prescription drugs are too expensive to seek medical care. Also 800 military bases worldwide. Tax dollars in the millions given to Isreal instead of helping the poor. Education is too expensive here and no charge 8n Isreal. People here don t want socialism because they really don t understand it but they are paying for it in Isreal. Hood luck to all .
30 years for a drug charge! Come on! I dont believe in this if it's a nonviolent crime. This warrants rehabilitation a real program for change not years in jail. I've heard so many cases of ppl getting more time for drug charges and repeated convictions involving drugs then ppl who have murdered or committed very violent crimes it is unreasonable

I am proud to be working towards getting my Masters in Clinical Mental Health, and one of my concerns is helping my local police force work on forming a unit that deals *soley* with the mentally ill. Our jails are *not* meant to be used as an overflow tank for a broken mental health system. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness should not have an addendum written in small print that says "Unless you are mentally ill".

I had some bad feelings once and went to a counselor,who had me locked up in a mental hospital for 2 weeks, where I killed myself to get out.I put myself into a deep trance ,was pronounced dead and 20 minutes later came back to life.Then at the hearing they apologized for the big mistake. I will never be the same, as this has diluted any confidence that I may have had in such a system.I will never ask for help again..........................lolly

Sigh, I've been locked up a handful of times and always saw mentally ill ppl inside. Not right at all!! And staff treats them so bad. It's like slapping an infant in the face for not being able to tie they're shoes. 😔 Answer is LOVE. Would u treat your loved ones like that?? Makes me cry.
Who would not be mentally ill with the economic pressures of a system that provides no decent-paying low-skill jobs, no affordable housing, no guarantee of health care for those who need it most, and politicians who are only interested in placating developers, gentrifiers, and those selling "solutions" to hiding unsightly poor people holding down property values? I wonder if a large percentage of those mentally ill people would heal if they had economic security?
It’s so sad, we lock these people up and don’t give the help they need just shoved medication down their throats then release them back to society with no support and no medication. Then they are brought right back into jail and prison. I have anxiety and depression and no I haven’t committed crimes and stuff but my environment and such is wayyyy more positive then most of these individuals but say I was locked in a jail cell I would really go crazy and get even worse. It makes these individuals mental state even worse.
Wow...what a miserable miserable situation. It's easy to point the finger at the USA, but I think this is generally a global problem. Dread to think how the severely mentally ill are treated in some of the world's poorest countries. What a sad world were people are basically treated like human waste. My simple life of working as a nurseryman, renting a small one bedroom flat, having my own vehicle and most importantly my health suddenly feels bountiful. Of course anyone can fall prey to any kind of illness and then what happens. It doesn't bare thinking about.
I completely agree with this video and it's purpose. Mentally ill patients are always going to have to be treated differently and set in a different environment in order to actually obtain their punishment and treatment. Prison staff are not correctly trained to help people with a mental illness. Therefore, mentally unstable individuals need to be placed into a mental institution or hospital in order to satisfy everyone's best interest. Mentally ill patients do not simply "get what they deserve" because they either cannot help it, or need to commit a crime to survive. So, at the end of the day it is better for mentally ill individuals to be treated in a setting fit for their specific disorders.
I think I have anxiety and premature depressive conditions from time to time but I've never been to any hospitals. I think my anti-functionality to the high society has gotten my conditions worsened. I have caused internal problems within the family members, hostile, verbally violent. The bottomline is I'm never satisfied. There's always something lacking in me, and have always thought like this since elementary school. I'm well considered to be an adult so you can tell this has been going on for a long time. I have another interesting occurrence in my life... I'm always attracted to and favored by someone who has high IQ. All of them had at least one among OCD, depression, family trauma, ADHD, narcissistic attitude, and most definitely good at math. Watching this video made me how I might be a help for these people because I'm definitely close to them.

I just heard a statement that is also equally frightening. It is that severely mentally ill will continue to be cycled through this program. These people, these men were not severely mentally ill before they went into this system but they certainly came out that way because they were imprisoned and then drugged out of their mind by Insane people call themselves doctors, who call themselves psychiatrists psychiatrists are the ones who need to be in prison. psychiatrist are the severely mentally ill people. There needs to be a huge overhaul of the mental health system and services available to people. I believe this also includes drug rehabilitation facilities not just long term in patient housing with rules but actual help with trama and mental illness/disorders and substance abuse. Most places available are 2 to 3 week in patient hospitals were your uncomfortable, programs are just a generalization of problem solving, food is terrible and you are allowed no personal items for entertainment so it makes going to these places a miserable idea. Then when you get there the doctors dont have or wont offer proper medicine for comfort or mental ease, the nurses and techs are rude, uncaring and terrible. I once heard that in a hospital the nurses and techs assigned to these units are those who didnt work out on other floors and physc is the last leg before termination. And that's the kind of treatment the patients get. Alot of times they also will house ppl that came from a jail or awaiting trial and cannot be with the general population at a jail. I've seen this in two facilities specifically. Its dangerous for the very mentally ill and for severe trama victims who has a hard time functioning on an appropriate level. It's very sad that there has not been more serious and constructive measures taken to improve this.
The low end rehab system has do many grifters to just take the money. They metric needs to stop jus having people be sober. The reasons they turned to substances are not being addressed. they not just cant cope and also are terrifed of relasping and eventually that usually is what the result is. So they go to a different low end place next time, that one is more of the same.

I was just talking about this issue as I work in a hospital and the mentally I’ll come and get monitored we need more resources they get stabilized and release them and they get off medication also the mentally I’ll are out of on healthcare workers and the prison system which isn’t fair . We need more resources !
If an individual understands the difference between right and wrong and they do wrong it is one thing to put them in a jail. If an individual has no concept of that distinction they belong in a different form of institution if they are harming people. The fact is jail is likely more profitable for private investors than psychiatric hospitals are. This is why you see so many mentally ill jail. That being said, just because you are depressed or have anxiety or bipolar disorder, this does not result in the individual not understanding right and wrong.

Solitary confinement is also a huge* issue! Their should be a limit on the amount of time someone can be in solitary confinement and stand in nonviolation of human rights... the courts say, we can do anything when it come to safety... thats a very simple argument... if that were the case you would be able to do anything for “safety.” Also its about helping not making it worse. Most of the people will be eventually released but that’s irrelevant, we are all human. Solitary confinement has been reviewed by professionals and they say, a sane person will go insane after 3 days.

We need to do better. I understand that some may have done horrific crimes but some are truly sick and we need to do something about those who need our help.
I heavily sympathize with the mentally ill. Here is the problem: the majority of them don’t believe they are sick and will not take their medication. They bounce in and out of emergency rooms, jail, prison, and short term psychiatric care. We need more long term care for people who have shown they are noncompliant with treatment and are a threat to themselves and the community. As soon as they get out, they stop taking their meds. It’s predictable.
The place I work at provides mental health services regardless of the patient's ability to pay. These patients REFUSE to take their medications. If these people refuse the help they are given they need to be in prison to protect the community. A man in my city raped two teen girls but because he does not take his medication he was found incompetent to stand trial. A judge let him back into the community without any treatment.

As a disabled veteran the va mental health system is extremely flawed you are treated worse than a prison inmate when you go in a psychiatric ward you are locked up 24/a prisoner gets time outside for a period of time daily. Not in a va psychiatric ward. The psychiatrist I have had experiences with cause harm to me and they are not accountable I was diagnosed with ptsd schizoaffective disorder and dissociative identity disorder. In 2014.the va has done nothing to this date march 2020.they diagnose veterans but they refuse to treat them.
Exactly, the diagnoses part is easy for them and being in a mental health hospital does definitely seem worse than being in a prison. The healthcare professionals you deal with in these places do not have your best interest in mind. They want to keep you there as long as possible to fill a bed to charge you or your insurance company an arm and a leg and you can't leave until you agree with your own mental illness diagnosis even though you've only been evaluated briefly by a psychiatrist and only get to talk to them for no more than 5 minutes a day.

I'm kind of conflicted. I'm glad asylums were deinstitutionalized because of the inhumane conditions that they had but as a person who's deals with their own mental illness, it hurts me to see people that are in need medical and social care, not receiving it. I'm thinking the institutionalization of mental health wards separate from hospitals might not be a bad thing. I would like for those mental health wards that aren't part of hospitals to act as the crutch and holding facilities for mentally ill peoples that end up in the streets or even prisons. Their goal would be to help these disadvantaged mentally ill people get off the streets and out of prisons and help them get back into society which will mean obtaining and maintaining employment (I do know that is hard for a lot of mentally ill people). There are always cases of people that need long-term and intensive care but there are a lot of people out there that could use outpatient care to get the medications they need and even therapy if needed to give them the boost to get back into society and live productive lives. This idea isn't perfect when it comes to practice but I think bringing back the mental health wards that essentially scoops up the mentally ill off the streets and out of prison should be considered.
There needs to be a mindset of treating and building their life back, simply medicating and a couple of worthless CBT classes is not going to sustain a person

Those who are mentally ill & also are a danger to others should be held apart from society for the safety/security of citizens, but the criminally insane are a minority within the population of those with mental illness. Those who are mentally ill & have had severe problems holding down employment & taking care of their own needs due to their illness are a much larger population that are always cruelly ignored by the Texas Legislators & Government. They are in the most dire need of help because so many with serious mental illness are or will become homeless. They need the kinds of help, government aid & in the same variety in which those who have cognitive & learning challenges are offered in Texas (like supervised, group homes, free medical care & prescription coverage). It's unconscionably how we give ourselves permission to treat the mentally ill as "less than" & so discard them into the streets where they're left to all manner of dehumanizing treatment. They often become victims of crime, have high rates of suicide, illnesses, must beg &/or commit petty crime for food etc & naturally they're usually without any form of medical care & medication. Many self medicate seeking any relief they can find from the squalid existance they live.

I remember the mental institution in Gowanda closed down. There was a public outcry because they just let them out on the street, no care! I think it's used as a prision today!

Yes help them recover or get treatment, but if you're healthy and you commit a crime - you suffer the consequences...same goes for the mentally ill. Get them healthy then they can carry out their sentence. Pretty sure most everyone would agree with this, had they themselves been an INNOCENT VICTIM of one of these people.

It's a shame that this goes on but I would rather have them in jail than out on the streets committing crimes against innocent people. If they haven't done anything criminal; they shouldn't go to jail but if they break the law; they should go to jail like anybody else. I don't have the answers about how to help them BEFORE they break the law and find themselves in that situation. I only know what I have seen with my own eyes working in a Sheriff's Department in Texas. They come to jail. They take med while in jail and get leveled out. When they are released they are given enough medication for a week and an appointment card to continue treatment outside jail. They don't go. They stop taking their meds. They end up back in jail. If they CHOOSE not to take their meds; we can't make them but we do have to protect society from what they do just like any other criminal. The government can't be responsible for everybody. These people's families should step in. And some DO but they can't MAKE them take their meds either and they can't allow them to disrupt the household. You can lock them up in mental hospitals or jails. They are still locked up and taking meds. When they get released; they do what they want.

When I did have the one oppertunity to be by mistake of the guard's, I loved it, i talked with the other girls and felt normal rather then isolated, alone and suicidal. I self medicate and use drugs.
I get it though, if people are going to keep going off there meds and then kill someone they have to be held accountable. I was. I committed a battery charge cause I wasnt taking one of my meds. You send a murderer to a psychward, then when they get out and there non compliment again... They murder or comitt another crime. We should bring back hospitals for criminals.. Other State Governors followed his example with NO thought for the repercussions behind this action. Here arrives the increase in Prison populations & expanded instances of Homelessness! As a disabled veteran I have been diagnosed with numerous mental health disorders over the past 40 years in 2014 and I was diagnosed with PTSD schizoaffective disorder and dissociative identity disorder the care for veterans with mental illness is extremely poor the va mental health system diagnoses veterans with mental health issues and refuse to treat disorders I am enraged with the psychiatrist who I have had to deal with at the va hospital where I live I believe I have been red flagged by the va because I filed complaints with the patient advocate a formal complaint with the inspector general of department of veterans affairs. I asked my congressional rep to advocate for me and they did nothing to help me and the politicians wonder why veterans are killing themselves. The va mental health system has people who are not doing there jobs some of them are sadistic.
We need to fire the bosses and use that money to help people.

I've heard so many cases of ppl getting more time for drug charges and repeated convictions involving drugs then ppl who have murdered or committed very violent crimes it is unreasonable

I am proud to be working towards getting my Masters in Clinical Mental Health, and one of my concerns is helping my local police force work on forming a unit that deals *soley* with the mentally ill. Our jails are *not* meant to be used as an overflow tank for a broken mental health system. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness should not have an addendum written in small print that says "Unless you are mentally ill".

I had some bad feelings once and went to a counselor,who had me locked up in a mental hospital for 2 weeks, where I killed myself to get out.I put myself into a deep trance ,was pronounced dead and 20 minutes later came back to life.Then at the hearing they apologized for the big mistake. I will never be the same, as this has diluted any confidence that I may have had in such a system.I will never ask for help again..........................lolly

It’s so sad, we lock these people up and don’t give the help they need just shoved medication down their throats then release them back to society with no support and no medication. Then they are brought right back into jail and prison. I have anxiety and depression and no I haven’t committed crimes and stuff but my environment and such is wayyyy more positive then most of these individuals but say I was locked in a jail cell I would really go crazy and get even worse. Wow...what a miserable miserable situation. It's easy to point the finger at the USA, but I think this is generally a global problem. Dread to think how the severely mentally ill are treated in some of the world's poorest countries. What a sad world were people are basically treated like human waste. My simple life of working as a nurseryman, renting a small one bedroom flat, having my own vehicle and most importantly my health suddenly feels bountiful. I completely agree with this video and it's purpose. Mentally ill patients are always going to have to be treated differently and set in a different environment in order to actually obtain their punishment and treatment. Prison staff are not correctly trained to help people with a mental illness. Therefore, mentally unstable individuals need to be placed into a mental institution or hospital in order to satisfy everyone's best interest. Mentally ill patients do not simply "get what they deserve" because they either cannot help it, or need to commit a crime to survive. So, at the end of the day it is better for mentally ill individuals to be treated in a setting fit for their specific disorders.

I think I have anxiety and premature depressive conditions from time to time but I've never been to any hospitals. I think my anti-functionality to the high society has gotten my conditions worsened. I have caused internal problems within the family members, hostile, verbally violent. The bottomline is I'm never satisfied. There's always something lacking in me, and have always thought like this since elementary school. I'm well considered to be an adult so you can tell this has been going on for a long time. I have another interesting occurrence in my life... I'm always attracted to and favored by someone who has high IQ. All of them had at least one among OCD, depression, family trauma, ADHD, narcissistic attitude, and most definitely good at math. Watching this video made me how I might be a help for these people because I'm definitely close to them.

There needs to be a huge overhaul of the mental health system and services available to people. I believe this also includes drug rehabilitation facilities not just long term in patient housing with rules but actual help with trama and mental illness/disorders and substance abuse. Most places available are 2 to 3 week in patient hospitals were your uncomfortable, programs are just a generalization of problem solving, food is terrible and you are allowed no personal items for entertainment so it makes going to these places a miserable idea. Then when you get there the doctors dont have or wont offer proper medicine for comfort or mental ease, the nurses and techs are rude, uncaring and terrible. I once heard that in a hospital the nurses and techs assigned to these units are those who didnt work out on other floors and physc is the last leg before termination. And that's the kind of treatment the patients get. Alot of times they also will house ppl that came from a jail or awaiting trial and cannot be with the general population at a jail. I've seen this in two facilities specifically. Its dangerous for the very mentally ill and for severe trama victims who has a hard time functioning on an appropriate level. It's very sad that there has not been more serious and constructive measures taken to improve this.
The low end rehab system has do many grifters to just take the money. They metric needs to stop jus having people be sober. The reasons they turned to substances are not being addressed. they not just cant cope and also are terrifed of relasping and eventually that usually is what the result is. So they go to a different low end place next time, that one is more of the same.
These people are human beings. Try to treat them as such. Amen.

I was just talking about this issue as I work in a hospital and the mentally I’ll come and get monitored we need more resources they get stabilized and release them and they get off medication also the mentally I’ll are out of on healthcare workers and the prison system which isn’t fair . If an individual understands the difference between right and wrong and they do wrong it is one thing to put them in a jail. If an individual has no concept of that distinction they belong in a different form of institution if they are harming people. The fact is jail is likely more profitable for private investors than psychiatric hospitals are. This is why you see so many mentally ill jail. That being said, just because you are depressed or have anxiety or bipolar disorder, this does not result in the individual not understanding right and wrong.

Solitary confinement is also a huge* issue! Their should be a limit on the amount of time someone can be in solitary confinement and stand in nonviolation of human rights... the courts say, we can do anything when it come to safety... thats a very simple argument... if that were the case you would be able to do anything for “safety.” Also its about helping not making it worse. Most of the people will be eventually released but that’s irrelevant, we are all human. Solitary confinement has been reviewed by professionals and they say, a sane person will go insane after 3 days.

We need to do better. I understand that some may have done horrific crimes but some are truly sick and we need to do something about those who need our help.

I heavily sympathize with the mentally ill. Here is the problem: the majority of them don’t believe they are sick and will not take their medication. They bounce in and out of emergency rooms, jail, prison, and short term psychiatric care. We need more long term care for people who have shown they are noncompliant with treatment and are a threat to themselves and the community. As soon as they get out, they stop taking their meds. It’s predictable.
The place I work at provides mental health services regardless of the patient's ability to pay. These patients REFUSE to take their medications. If these people refuse the help they are given they need to be in prison to protect the community. A man in my city raped two teen girls but because he does not take his medication he was found incompetent to stand trial. A judge let him back into the community without any treatment.

A disturbing programme. It brings to me the old question of the Quality of a Society is judged by the way it treats its most unfortunate. On that basis, the World's First Power needs to review its policy. The point about Inmates being there because they had been 'off their meds' is a common refrain. How to encourage them so they don't go to jail - which is inappropriate for them and a burden on the jail authorities who have to deal with the deliberate criminal prison inmate.

As a disabled veteran the va mental health system is extremely flawed you are treated worse than a prison inmate when you go in a psychiatric ward you are locked up 24/a prisoner gets time outside for a period of time daily. Not in a va psychiatric ward. The psychiatrist I have had experiences with cause harm to me and they are not accountable I was diagnosed with ptsd schizoaffective disorder and dissociative identity disorder. In 2014.the va has done nothing to this date march 2020.they diagnose veterans but they refuse to treat them.
Exactly, the diagnoses part is easy for them and being in a mental health hospital does definitely seem worse than being in a prison. The healthcare professionals you deal with in these places do not have your best interest in mind. They want to keep you there as long as possible to fill a bed to charge you or your insurance company an arm and a leg and you can't leave until you agree with your own mental illness diagnosis even though you've only been evaluated briefly by a psychiatrist and only get to talk to them for no more than 5 minutes a day.

I'm kind of conflicted. I'm glad asylums were deinstitutionalized because of the inhumane conditions that they had but as a person who's deals with their own mental illness, it hurts me to see people that are in need medical and social care, not receiving it.
I'm thinking the institutionalization of mental health wards separate from hospitals might not be a bad thing. I would like for those mental health wards that aren't part of hospitals to act as the crutch and holding facilities for mentally ill peoples that end up in the streets or even prisons. Their goal would be to help these disadvantaged mentally ill people get off the streets and out of prisons and help them get back into society which will mean obtaining and maintaining employment (I do know that is hard for a lot of mentally ill people). There are always cases of people that need long-term and intensive care but there are a lot of people out there that could use outpatient care to get the medications they need and even therapy if needed to give them the boost to get back into society and live productive lives. This idea isn't perfect when it comes to practice but I think bringing back the mental health wards that essentially scoops up the mentally ill off the streets and out of prison should be considered.
There needs to be a mindset of treating and building their life back, simply medicating and a couple of worthless CBT classes is not going to sustain a person

Those who are mentally ill & also are a danger to others should be held apart from society for the safety/security of citizens, but the criminally insane are a minority within the population of those with mental illness. Those who are mentally ill & have had severe problems holding down employment & taking care of their own needs due to their illness are a much larger population that are always cruelly ignored by the Texas Legislators & Government. They are in the most dire need of help because so many with serious mental illness are or will become homeless. They need the kinds of help, government aid & in the same variety in which those who have cognitive & learning challenges are offered in Texas (like supervised, group homes, free medical care & prescription coverage). It's unconscionably how we give ourselves permission to treat the mentally ill as "less than" & so discard them into the streets where they're left to all manner of dehumanizing treatment. They often become victims of crime, have high rates of suicide, illnesses, must beg &/or commit petty crime for food etc & naturally they're usually without any form of medical care & medication. Many self medicate seeking any relief they can find from the squalid existance they live.

Yes help them recover or get treatment, but if you're healthy and you commit a crime - you suffer the consequences...same goes for the mentally ill. The country overall state has declined, the US is neither democratic nor does anyone care about the people in their community. Let‘s see if there is any hope with the next election coming up.

It's a shame that this goes on but I would rather have them in jail than out on the streets committing crimes against innocent people. If they haven't done anything criminal; they shouldn't go to jail but if they break the law; they should go to jail like anybody else. I don't have the answers about how to help them BEFORE they break the law and find themselves in that situation. I only know what I have seen with my own eyes working in a Sheriff's Department in Texas. They come to jail. They take med while in jail and get leveled out. When they are released they are given enough medication for a week and an appointment card to continue treatment outside jail. They don't go. They stop taking their meds. They end up back in jail. If they CHOOSE not to take their meds; we can't make them but we do have to protect society from what they do just like any other criminal. The government can't be responsible for everybody. These people's families should step in. And some DO but they can't MAKE them take their meds either and they can't allow them to disrupt the household. You can lock them up in mental hospitals or jails. They are still locked up and taking meds. When they get released; they do what they want.
Who is in control of the voice to skull experiments. I will not ever forgive them.
