I asked her how much she wanted for it and she told me that she was currently holding it for someone who agreed to pay $4,000 for it. I had to hold back my laughter and politely tell her that was too rich for me. Happy hunting and good luck with your channel bub.

I even showed them I wasn't lieing but they always say the price is the price. I even offered a good price for a book once that I liked & they said they would not budge from the price. I told them they will NEVER move that book at that price. They didn't care. Research is important.

They are either convinced they know more than you do, regardless of your knowledge or experience, OR they are invested in the price they paid because they paid too much and think they have a chance of making their money back. I've seen this thinking on everything from comics to picture frames to silver coins.

Haha! Those prices are hilarious! Another pricing thing antique malls do is just take a whole box and just slap a $5 sticker on each book. Seemingly blindly. Now, I know some ppl love this situation, cuz they might find $20 books in there. The problem for me is I wouldn’t know a $20 book if it bit me on the butt. I only buy to read or if it looks cool. So, what I see is a box essentially 98% full of dollar books (at best) on sale for $5. I don’t even look.

It's funny. There's an antique store here in town that has comics, and they're pretty close to FMV on their books. Then there's a thrift store a block away from them that also has comics (they get all of their stock from abandoned storage units) and they not only don't display them in a way that doesn't ruin them, but they also overprice their books. Nowhere near this bad, but well over FMV. Great video, James. Always educate yourself on what the books are worth, or have your phone available to check. I'm just worried that someone will pay those outrageous prices.

Went to an antique shop next to my friends house. Asked a dude if he had any comics and he pulled out five wrinkled comics… the most expensive book in there was a Batman #356. Cool Dr. Strange cover… but a below average grade considering the wrinkles and rust spots. None of them were in bags.
I thought he was a nice old dude who ran an antique shop out of his garage so I offered $50 for them… literally $10 a book. And all the books were about half that Considering the condition. He accepted and I figured I threw the guy a bone for his store. It was just after the pandemic and everyone had just opened up shop again.
Literally next time I was at my friends house he ran out of his garage to talk to me about what a deal I stole from him and was sure to sarcastically say enjoy the deal… told him I’m more than willing to return your books if you want to refund me… he just said “no you just enjoy your deal”…
guarantee you this guy went and looked at 9.8 graded copies of all 5 books listed on eBay and thought he could have gotten the same price for the half destroyed copies… literally the last time I’ll buy comics from an antique shop. 0/10 experience… would rather have my $50 back.

I was like, no babe, that's for a perfect copy, this looks like it was stored in my asshole for the last 30 years. To prove it to her I sent it in for grading. It came back a 3.5. Worth about $100. With shops like that one, I'm never sure whether the sellers are ignorant, or they are hoping the customers will be. The thing I find when it comes to looking for comics at antique stores is that the ones by me tend not to reprice their merchandise very often or very quickly. So sometimes I've gotten lucky when a book pops and an antique dealer's $5 price tag goes from highway robbery for a dollar book to a steal for the buyer.

I guess I will be the devil's advocate who defends antique stores/malls as a good place to buy comics. I will wholeheartedly agree that about 8 times out of 10 the dealer is someone who either doesn't keep up with the comic book market or prices everything at the Overstreet NM value regardless of it's actual condition. Usually they just put a price on it that they pull out of their ass, put in in a box (in a bag if you're lucky), and never touch it again until it sells, but as a buyer I use that to my advantage. Since they don't follow the marketplace, adjust prices when values go up or down, or even know what each individual comic is actually worth, you can often find a modern key or a spec book just sitting there at an insanely low price because they labor under the impression that only old books are valuable.
To site an example from your video of how to take a complaint and turn it into an advantage, you pointed out how antique dealers often way overprice the first issue of a series because they (mistakenly or not) believe that first issue automatically means it's worth more. Do you know what they also do? They way underprice the last issue in a series run, not realizing that this is usually one of the more expensive issues in a run due to them often having a low print run. I can't tell you often I've snagged a last issue from an antique mall for a buck or two and then flipped it for a profit to somebody trying complete the run of a collection.
Long story short (too late!), what most people hate about antique dealers who sell comics is what I love about them - their ignorance (intentional or accidental) of the actual value of the comics they sell. For every ten booths I have to wade through that are selling copies of Turok # 1 with the chromium cover for $25, I'll usually find one booth that has a Flash Vol. II # 92 for $1 because they don't know or care that it's the first appearance of Impulse. For me, at least, I'll gladly take those odds.

FMV has nothing to do with reselling, it's all about, what a collector is willing to spend. I do sell, however I'm a collector first and resell any books I upgrade. I have no problem paying up to a certain amount for a book I really want in my collection. My intention is not to resell, however if I do, it's usually just to offset the cost of the upgrade, without losing any money on my OG purchase. resellers have a margin, which is far different from what FMV is.

    Thanks for the laughs today

I don't want to cast aspersions on other shops with overpriced goods, but here's one possible answer to the question "how do these morons stay in business?"
In my town, there was a cluttered, disorganized "toys and collectables" store in a run-down shopping strip that asked ridiculously high prices on almost everything in stock -- beat-up toys, sci-fi paperbacks, comics, T-shirts, posters.
The exception? Stacks and stacks and stacks of back-issue newsstand porno magazines (Penthouse and Hustler, mainly) along the back wall, all of which were bagged and generally priced at $3 or $4. I'm pretty sure that was how the shop stayed in business, because there were no other used book dealers in the area that carried skin mags.
The worst story I have about the place -- back in the late '80s I met a woman who was really into horror entertainment. She told me that she'd had a small stack of 1950s EC horror comics and took them to the "toys and collectables" place to have them appraised. No problem, the owner tells her. She returns a few days later and the owner claims he can't find the comics at the moment, but no problem, he'll look around and find them and if she comes back he'll have them. I'm not sure how many times she went back but by the time I heard this story she had long ago given up on the idea of reclaiming the comics. "Sorry, still can't find 'em. Looked everywhere. Turned the store upside down."

Even with all the competition here in the metro Atlanta area you still find some places like this, and yes, usually in antique outlets. Sometimes they figure they'll have 50% off sale and therefore mark it up. But in most cases, like this one, it would still be thoughtlessly overpriced.

When my wife and I first started dating she took me to Golden Age Collectibles in Seattle, the world's oldest comic shop. It's in Pike's Place Market, so it's pretty touristy but they have some good stuff.
Knowing how big of a Superman fan I am, she pointed out a book in their front display case, Superman Vol. 2 #1. I already had a copy but I'm glad she asked me about it before just buying it for me because it was priced at $40 and the FMV at the time was about $5! I nearly had a heart attack when I saw that price
She learned right there not to buy comic books for me, just let me go to a shop and cut loose (Which she does 😁).

Stopped in there on vacation based on strong recomm3ndations. Couldn’t have been more disappointed. More like a tourist trap with a couple comics. I don’t buy slabs or high value books, so I can’t comment on that, but the back issue bins were hilarious. There was maybe 6 short boxes worth of strictly DC/Marvel back issues in this little thing about the size of a child’s dresser. That was it. Had negotiated an hour of digging with my wife, so was really excited to dive in. Very disappointing.

That Infinity War #1 price is just ridiculous. It's not even like they looked up graded 9.8 prices or something, because that book is not worth $399 in any condition whatsoever. I can only imagine that they put up just ridiculous prices on everything in the hopes that even a single person might buy one thinking they were getting some rare and valuable thing... and also didnt come back with a torch to burn down the place when they find out how badly they got robbed.

You'd think they'd adjust their prices after not selling but I've seen the same books in some of these stores for more than a year. BTW that's a 2nd print GI Joe 2 that you pictured, I see them all the time on ebay listed as 1st prints. CGC even messes that up all the time, so be careful out there guys! Also, where on earth are you finding single digit Joe books in 9 and up condition for $3?! I'd buy those all day.
