  • Fabien Cousteau was born to be an aquanaut. The grandson of the famed explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau learned how to scuba dive at the age of four. His latest mission: building the habitat and operating an underwater habitat and research station that would be one of the largest ever built, named Proteus.
The habitat will take three years to complete and will cost an estimated $135 million. It will be located 60 feet underwater in a marine protected area off the coast of Curaçao, an island in the Caribbean Sea. And it will have room for up to 12 people to live underwater for weeks-possibly even months-at a time.

135 Million sounds relatively cheap when you consider so many terrible movies have been made on that kind of budget O_O

This makes me so proud of our species. We’re simultaneously capable of the worst behavior to our fellow human beings and animals, and the environment, yet also so amazing when we choose to chase what Lincoln termed the ‘better angels of our nature’ 🙏

3:25 I don't know if it allows for faster food growth, but I know for a fact that it makes insects BIGGER because their size is determined by the oxygen concentration in the air. Cricket flour comes to mind. Don't know if plants would be the ideal way to go with such limited space. Tight spaces might also worry some of being trapped with a GIANT cockroach! :D

Your grandfather was a true pioneer and explorer of our world and its oceans in more ways than said, and more funding should be put aside for this, the secrets and knowledge the ocean has to offer needs our attention and support, going to low orbit is one thing and been achieved with some degree of success, but our oceans floor and depths of which hasn't truly been reachecd on the large scale of things and its exploreration is needed and more justified, being its a huge supplier and a major part of our food source, besides some of the medicine that live and grow there, and many other reasons justifying funding and exploration...take care be safe and may your needs be met when needed....

... Fabien Cousteau is carrying on one of the greatest traditions in science ... this is so genius & so long time in coming ... but then, so very worth the wait ... when I see this is am reminded of my favourite all time oceanographic archeological projects: Swedish Dive Team; Ocean X; Baltic Sea Anomaly .. how incredible is creative imagination that a vehicle designed by Star Wars is a quite probable (psychic intuitive) reproduction of this 'space-ship' at the bottom of the Baltic Sea ...this project just cries out for further research, which I'm sure would prove endlessly fascinating & fruitful for metallurgy & reverse engineering ... nevertheless, these underway stations should be plentiful in our oceans ... so we wish upon a sea-star ...

Different application. For coral reef studies you want a fixed structure because the purpose is monitoring changes to that ecosystems over many years/decades.

    • @Hamdad

Water would flood up to the top of the window, but not higher, since the air inside is the same pressure as the water outside (like in a diving bell). Hence, everybody would get wet but nobody would drown. The windows are acrylic rather than glass however, to prevent shattering

What accent is that on Fabien? To me, it sounds American with a tinge of British/Irish inflection…though I think he was born and raised in France, he did spend a good chunk of his childhood and adulthood in America and maybe spent some time in the UK, which explains the odd accent?
