Aquanaut Fabien Cousteau's $135 Million ISS Of The Deep Sea | Forbes

- Fabien Cousteau was born to be an aquanaut. The grandson of the famed explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau learned how to scuba dive at the age of four. His latest mission: building the habitat and operating an underwater habitat and research station that would be one of the largest ever built, named Proteus.
The habitat will take three years to complete and will cost an estimated $135 million. It will be located 60 feet underwater in a marine protected area off the coast of Curaçao, an island in the Caribbean Sea. And it will have room for up to 12 people to live underwater for weeks-possibly even months-at a time.

135 Million sounds relatively cheap when you consider so many terrible movies have been made on that kind of budget O_O
Oddly, it's exactly 1/1111.11111111 the price of the ISS, shuttle launches + development costs included
@@Hamdad let’s fuckin do this yea
Stupid idea! They're just building an underwater tomb. Nothing humans create stand a chance against nature.
Can we get this project underway sooner than later?
Hopefully
@@gomez3357 me too

Hopefully 🙏
Do it!
This makes me so proud of our species. We’re simultaneously capable of the worst behavior to our fellow human beings and animals, and the environment, yet also so amazing when we choose to chase what Lincoln termed the ‘better angels of our nature’ 🙏
3:25 I don't know if it allows for faster food growth, but I know for a fact that it makes insects BIGGER because their size is determined by the oxygen concentration in the air. Cricket flour comes to mind. Don't know if plants would be the ideal way to go with such limited space. Tight spaces might also worry some of being trapped with a GIANT cockroach! :D
Your grandfather was a true pioneer and explorer of our world and its oceans in more ways than said, and more funding should be put aside for this, the secrets and knowledge the ocean has to offer needs our attention and support, going to low orbit is one thing and been achieved with some degree of success, but our oceans floor and depths of which hasn't truly been reachecd on the large scale of things and its exploreration is needed and more justified, being its a huge supplier and a major part of our food source, besides some of the medicine that live and grow there, and many other reasons justifying funding and exploration...take care be safe and may your needs be met when needed....
How can i Help :) i Bet bunch of volunteers will help.
Listened to a podcast about this yesterday. Super exciting
... Fabien Cousteau is carrying on one of the greatest traditions in science ... this is so genius & so long time in coming ... but then, so very worth the wait ... when I see this is am reminded of my favourite all time oceanographic archeological projects: Swedish Dive Team; Ocean X; Baltic Sea Anomaly .. how incredible is creative imagination that a vehicle designed by Star Wars is a quite probable (psychic intuitive) reproduction of this 'space-ship' at the bottom of the Baltic Sea ...this project just cries out for further research, which I'm sure would prove endlessly fascinating & fruitful for metallurgy & reverse engineering ... nevertheless, these underway stations should be plentiful in our oceans ... so we wish upon a sea-star ...
Fabien, je veux bien faire parti de cette aventure !
Finally Sealab 2020 can finally be a reality
Could never get in to that one
We need more of these

Brilliant ❤️
I agree. This project more important than "outer" space.
I don't get why some people are so aggressively in denial of the fact that we live in a larger universe, like bro just look at the Moon at different phases it is noticably round and being illuminated by the sun. What more do you need?
Wow! This sounds so cool!
subnautica irl
Can't wait for pathos ll

Ray Dalio: Sea exploration is a much more worthy investment than space exploration...
*Elon Musk enters chat
Why not do both? Both causes are cool and worthy in their own right.
I think its harder to create tech for deep sea exploration
@@bignutbussa3917 laughs in human ingenuity
Haha do u mean gilane and Jeffrey lol n bill gates shure he funds a yacht/submarine project 🤣 underwater pedo villages
Cool
I feel like we should have already had ten of these.
Was hoping for something self-sustainable, but I suppose this is a start.
The science community needs this it will help in studying the ocean
As expected from Jotaro...
@@solus2074 just doing my job
Isn't this the premise of the movie Underwater? It didn't end well
Space travel was the premise of the film Gravity, and that didn't end well either. Better stay on Earth
@@Hamdad lol touchè
fax though lmao
Ow and never watch tv have your friends over or be a blonde.
They were mining for resources though disturbing the local population down in the marinas trench.
Some updates since this video?
Underwater tourism needs to become a thing instead of outer space tourism. It needs less energy and pushes money toward a better future on this planet.
That is interesting about food growth ,i some time in past thought of molecular food growth fast like microwave fast .speed a seasons contained time kinda thought for outer space or earth does not matter well put it politely I have idea but not a mechanic yet I get the idea of how it would work from thought a also from thinking on stars not study stars but think about them or universe don’t look but think. out of wisdom in proverbs.method of strange inventions .mentioned there proverbs. Technique works good .
Fabian is true Cousteau following grandad
Sealab 2020
Exactly
Wouldn't a submarine that allows people to exit be better to study different ocean environments?
Different application. For coral reef studies you want a fixed structure because the purpose is monitoring changes to that ecosystems over many years/decades.
💖
Basically Octonauts in real life
He looks like Coach Calipari.
What is the current status on this project?
Very cool. This makes me think of the video game Subnautica
Why isn't there a like button?
Good afternoon,
From Antena 3 TV News from Madrid, we would like to broadcast this video in our News and Programme
Could you please, tell me therms and conditions?
Thank you in advance,
He said he didn't know his grandfather was famous for decades. Does he mean that he was 20 years old and didn't know? I think that's a bit of a stretch 🤔
What if the windows broke
What if the windows broke at iss?
Water would flood up to the top of the window, but not higher, since the air inside is the same pressure as the water outside (like in a diving bell). Hence, everybody would get wet but nobody would drown. The windows are acrylic rather than glass however, to prevent shattering
What accent is that on Fabien? To me, it sounds American with a tinge of British/Irish inflection…though I think he was born and raised in France, he did spend a good chunk of his childhood and adulthood in America and maybe spent some time in the UK, which explains the odd accent?
If coral grows so well on metal an they are having problems places needing it to grow for fish an other sea life then why such hard trouble if they use some metal which seems to attract coral to it seems .billie
Jaques wanted Calypso scuttled after she was no longer sea worthy so she would have a purpose on ocean floor to grow a reef not become a commercial party boat / night club etc
Signe up .. marine engine driver grade 2, master class 5 captain, PADI rescue diver
Has anyone considered involving Elon Musk in the funding of this laudable project?
A year later, vaporware?
Man!!! If i was a billionaire! This is where our tax dollars should go.
crazy how this isnt a thing
Space exploration is exploration, not a bus sized lab thats only 60+ feet below the ocean. Want to match the ISS put it down far enough that you cant see the sun, that would be exploration.
Second
Also first dislike
Why the dislike?
It's not deep not even remotely deep. Its been done before many times at these depths call me when there is a saturation diving deep sea habitat 700 meters which is around the equivalent depth that comex divers tested hyperbaric chambers at 500 meters in the actual ocean with a mixture of oxygen helium and hydrogen not nitrogen .
He is the real Zissou!!!
