Having a surface level habitat with a home underneath would be the best solution. Living underwater is a challenge despite the technologies we have because of underwater pressure. Who knows. Maybe some genius will find a solution to underwater pressure.
It's not like there are no solutions. It's just that living inside a bubble that potentially has to fight off 100s of atmospheres worth of pressure to keep you alive sounds risky af, no matter the technology
I'm assuming you're thinking of artificial floating islands. They would be a great option, albeit one that would need extensive tsunami and hurricane engineering as the high seas are notoriously rough! I'm sure we could engineer the islands and the buildings on them to withstand the waves of weather.
@@RexGalilae I didn't even mention Elon nor was I thinking of him, it's undeniable that within the century - we'll be at minimum, mass migrating to nearby planetary bodies and more likely beginning a dyson swarm. There's just too many reasons to move off of Earth to consider the alternative.
Great video, but the initial reasoning of why such an endeavour would be needed is flawed. Even if the atmosphere is toxic for humans on the surface , it’s much easier creating habitats that are air tight protecting you from the elements on the surface. Dealing with challenges of creating underwater colony adds so much more unnecessary complexity, such as water pressure and much more
A fair point. When such cities are constructed, it will likely be due to research purposes, or perhaps for recreation. Sure, building such cities would be “unnecessarily complex,” but so is scaling Mount Everest (at least in the unnecessary part).
Even if earth becomes more flooded and temperature rises, ruining liveability of places, cities, maybe countries and thousands die because of it... Even then, there will be liveable places still that make the ludicrous idea of ocean colonization void. Edit: its just clickbait is all
I’ve never thought of building underwater communities to escape a world wide disaster, I know there was an experiment where 15 people were put into a vacuum sealed complex to inmate what it would be like to live in an inclosed environment, but not the experiments stated in this video. This is why I love this channel, the content and art and voicing is just phenomenal.

What a fascinating video on a topic I know next to nothing about. I've read so much about space stations, Dyson spheres, generational ships, that I know all the scifi tropes about them and the engineering challenges in building them. But underwater habitats is something I never read about, and as the end of the video highlights, this could be a more feasible way to extend humanities exploration potential...
@@TheBardSM probably because self-sufficient wasn't in the interest of nuclear submarine crews, designers and commissioners. Who knows, maybe there are ways to make underwater habitats self-sufficient, it's just not being discovered yet.
Using technology already available for building oil-drilling operations in places like the North Sea, it might be possible to build floating "iceberg cities" with 90 percent of their volume underwater. Building cities on the ocean bottom will probably always be impossible, though automated mining of the seabed is a virtual certainty since it's already known that chemical processes have concentrated a number of useful elements into what amounts to nuggets.
Doesn't the pressure come from the water itself upon the body? So, we are able to go down in a submarine and not be crushed to death (and likewise to not hallucinate). It would be the same living there.
that's what I was wondering. They were showing a home deep in space. If the habitats are airtight and pressurized normally, then we wouldn't have to worry about the bends until we go swimming...
There's a few reasons, but one of the simpler ones is if you ever go in/out of something it's a problem. Second though is if you build something super far down, then the less pressure inside the harder it is to sustain its shape, so even small increases in pressure inside can considerably lower the weight and materials needed to make something safely operate at depth. Something fun to think about is even modern nuclear submarines, capable of going down to considerable depths, actually get deformed when they dive. If you hang a string across an open section of the ship, when on the surface so it's tought and tight, as you dive it will start to hang and sag because the submarine is being squished and crushed. It's at a level it can survive happening for the ship, but that already, without a lot of extra careful systems for managing atmospheric pressure inside the submarine on the fly, means you're air pressure is going up a bit. Making a submarine so rigid that doesn't happen is again just prohibitively expensive in resources to build and the final weight of the vehicle.
@@rezs-tech maybe the pressure inside will be the same as the pressure outside to make the construction possible. Otherwise the enormous weight of the water would probably crush the whole thing

I imagine that in this future, where we live underwater, we’re still looking towards the stars. It would slow us down for sure, but I can see the image of people funneling onto a ship, squinting at the sun and breathing whatever fresh air there is for the first time in their lives. Generations of people will have gone without seeing the surface, and the one time that they do, is the last time that they ever will
As this video has convinced me, humans do best living on the surface of the ocean. A large amount of Styrofoam is floated so as to cover the sea inside the harbor, and a relatively lightweight building is installed there. This will at least keep prices down in dense cities. However, the covered sea completely blocks sunlight and completely destroys the environment for marine life.
