Just so you know... if you like Jägermeister, you might like black currant or cherry versions of Riga Black Balsam - they are far from classic, the cherry one appeared just a few years ago, but they are much more tasty and has a bit lower percentage of alcohol than the "original" one.
The house wich has the cats on top the towers. There is a story about. Long a go there was a rich man who wanted to join a merchant guild, but the guild rejected him so what he did was he built the house and on top of the tower he put a black cat (which bad luck) but not only that the cats behind was showing to the merchant guild house. The guild was outraged so they made deal with the man he could join but only if he turned the cat so it's head looked at the merchant guild.
Hey! i am from latvia and before u guys drank the balsam u said "Na zdarove!" instead of "priekā!" this is my 2nd time seeing tourists speaking russian in Latvia instead of latvian. And latvians can get pretty annoyed if tourists mess up the languege😅
Hey guys! A great vlog :) If you are still in Latvia, please do try to visit some medieval German crusaders castles outside Riga, for example like Sigulda-Turaida, Cesis (the capital of the Livonian Order), castle of Bauska. Or a beautiful 18th century baroque palace of Rundale, it is staining, like Versailles in France, it was build for a Duke of Kurland ( a lover of Russian empress Anna and regent of the Russian Empire 1740), for example HBO series Catherine The Grate (which is now on) was filmed there and the resent BBC series War an Pace as well. Also a little town of Kuldiga is like a frozen history, it barely changed since the 18th century and looks like something from a fairy-tale, also in Kuldiga you can find the widest waterfall in Europe. And of course, everywhere you go you can try some local food, beer and even vine, the most northern in the world :) Latvia is a relatively small country, so you can get anywhere in the morning by bus or a train and get back to Riga in the evening. Enjoy Latvia :)
The food might be cheap for you two but in reality for Latvian people it’s expensive because of the economy over there,I am Latvian but I have lived in UK for quiet sometime now and go visit my family every year! Great video

When you're starving, anything will do. But it's definitely not Latvian food (never been to a Hesburger's), and McDonald's certainly gets more visitors. We did hear that Latvia has a very large percentage of Russian people living there! It's hard as Americans to tell the difference between the two languages but interesting hearing from you that Russian was spoken a lot in Riga
@@JackandGabExplore Russian is spoken a lot in Riga, Jūrmala, and Daugavpils, but once you get further away from that part of Latvia, it's mostly Latvian. Most Latvians speak Russian fluently (hard to find someone who doesn't, to be honest), though English is becoming more and more popular too. If you visit Latvia again, I recommend visiting Cēsis, which is one of the earliest cultural sources in Latvia, and also the place I was born in. Oh and Russian is spoken in the Eastern part of Latvia (Latgale) as well.
@@JackandGabExplore I've read it's beause after border were openned after colapse of USSR many Baltic people went to western Europe for better life and their place in Baltic countries were replaced by Russians who are escaping from Putin's Russia but they don't want to be too much far from their homeland. :-) And Latvian is baltic language, Russian is slavic so it's completely different except some shared words. But I guess they got little slavic sound because of influence of Russian and Polish languages in last few hunderd centuries so I understand it's hard to recognize for foreigners.
@@Pidalin Starting second world war, soooo many Latvians were deported to Siberia to basically die. Then later on during the soviet regime there was a large migration movement from other republics of the USSR to Latvia. They were mostly people who were promised a job (mostly in newly built factories) and a better life. That is the biggest reason that there are so many Russians in Latvia today.

Since I returnet from Latvia I am feeling like under occupation always when I hear Russian langauge. :-D
And Latvian is baltic language, Russian is slavic so it's completely different except some shared words.
@@TheStaar01 I can't imagine live in country where half of people are not speaking official language of that country. :-D
If you would of bean in 11th to 18th of november you could of seen the Staro Rīga when the whole old town is coverd in lites and it looks even better.

One important thin about Black Balsam. Its made from 24 vulnerary herbs. So its more like dietary supplement and not alcoholic drink. Has been used like that from 1752.
You should try " Cherry Black Balsam ". And "pink soup".
Randomly found this, I'm going to Latvia and I'm from Daygo! Well done, thanks! ⚡
