you can soften those intake rubbers up by soaking in certain liquids. Can't remember what I used, but had some success with some rock hard Honda intakes
Oh really, if you remember what it was let me know please mate, in the past I've heated them in the oven but before I could get them to the bike they hardened lol. I tried boiling water another time aswell.
@motorcycle rescuer I have a 1986 ZL600 just like the one in your videos. We are having a multitude of issues, so your videos have been extremely helpful. We have adjusted the valves to mid-range factory specs, taken the carbs apart and cleaned thoroughly, and made sure everything is reconnected cleanly and correctly. When we started the bike, it immediately revved up to around 9000 rpm and stayed there. We took it back apart, re-cleaned and adjusted the flaps in the carbs, and reassembled the bike. Upon start-up, it started out great, but revved back up to around 6000 rpm and started idling variably between 1200 and 6000 rpm. Any ideas on what it could be and what we can do to remedy the issue?
Hi Kevin, I would be considering the diaphragms in the carbs here, make sure all the springs are in correctly. Did you balance the carbs after? That could help, but my main thought is that air is getting in after the butterfly valve? Possibly a leak in the intake manifolds?
@@motorcyclerescuer What do you mean balance the carbs? We adjusted the internal flaps to where they were closing fully, it looked as if a couple were hung open slightly, if that's what you mean? We've checked and rechecked all the connections on the outside between the breather box and the engine, everything seems to be connected correctly and tightened securely. We had an issue when the high/variable idle started where it was leaking fuel from the breather box, which is why we tore it down again and re-cleaned and rechecked it the second time. Any ideas on what that could be? Our thoughts went to floats stuck open, and another reason why we cleaned again, but after cleaning and reseting, still same issue
The carbs will need to be put on a balancing machine to see that they are all sucking in the same amount of air. RUclips has plenty carb balancing vids but you would need the tool. I still wonder if air is getting in somewhere though for it to have such a high idle.
hiya bro great job on the zl600. i was thinking of runing pods on my 600 bandit without rejeting.. puting spung in the back of the pods what you think mate. hate the airbox ;-( cheers mike
Hi Mike, honestly I think it's more work then it's worth. If it was easily done I would run with the original airbox but the rubber boots are ruined so air pods it is. Also if it rains the bike will run like rubbish. I would throw a highflo filter into the original airbox if I was you. Although if you really want to give it a shot then why not mate. You will have to upjet though rather then restrict the air, then washers in the pods can block air flow from getting into the diaphragms.
Hello, I installed precisely conical air filters because the original air box was no longer suitable for further use. Finally, what main jets did you end up with? and I understand correctly that all the arcades should be plugged, except for 2, because that's where I connect the hose to the tap?
Yes your right about the spare vacuum holes being plugged except the fuel one. I can't remember what I up jetted to but I suggest you restrict your cones a little. Old fadioned sweat wrist bands are good for this. Then up jet a touch. I would say by 10 or 15 on every carb
right now, connected to the air network, with cleaning agents in the form of old devices, it is much better and my questions are whether rubbers with air box devices must be used for cones or will my rubbers that I have be OK?
@@motorcyclerescuer Brake fluid lubricates rubber, i forgot about them so were in a month or 2 and they are stull supple. Bought them off ebay and they were rock hard so was abit of an experiment and it worked
Hey man, I'm putting my carbs back together as we speak and I was wondering, you plugged up what you said was a Suction hose. Where did it go? What hose was it?
Hi Issac, each carb boot or near the boot on the engine has a little suction port. The tube I'm blocking in the video goes from carb 4 to the petrol tank, its what sucks the fuel out of the tank. So you have 4 ports near each carb, they should all have a cap on them except for 1, that 1 has a tube that connects to the petrol tank near the fuel line. Hope this helps. Please subscribe if you havnt already.
@@motorcyclerescuer so what about the other 3 suction parts? Do they stay open or do they go into a certain spot? I got my carbs cleaned, my fuel is getting into the carbs and everything seems to be set up right except it just won't start? I tried plugging that nozzle on carb 4 but it still didnt start. It sounds exactly like yours did before you plugged up that hose so I am at a loss.

@cross hatch2 so yes thats the theory, you are richening the mixture. Less air and more fuel will get you through potentially.

Again that sounds to me like air is getting. Possibly through the intake manifold. You can spray them with easy start and see if the revs rise or not

Put inlet rubbers in a tub of brake fluid and that will soften them up plus they always stay pliable, done my VFR750 ones years ago and still soft
Oh really, I thought that would ruin them. How long do you leave them in?
Thanks for the advice

Those carbs rely a lot on vacuum. I had a crack in the diaphragms of two of mine that caused it to run like yours.

I believe so Dylan.
I have had one for 10 years and still have it....
I'll be tempted to keep this one of it ever runs well.
So you put 100s on the main jet? And whats your pilot jet size???
I rarely change the pilots Stephen. You only really need to up jet the main.
