Remember Mariko weakened Ishido power by putting him in a tight spot. Lady Ochiba told them if they let Mariko die all the high families were going to revolt and if they let her go then the hostages will also ask to leave. Lord Ishido went and found a third option which was to give Mariko the permit to leave then kidnap her using the Shinobi under the cloak if Night. Mariko understood Ishido's plan when the Shinobi tried to capture her instead of killing her. In those final moments Mariko took charge of the narrative by sacrificing herself so as to put their plan back into motion.
The shinobi weren't supposed to kill Mariko. Their task was to kidnap and hold her, so she is neither dead nor free, and Ishido would say she had been taken by "bandits".
One way or another, Mariko was going to die. That was her purpose: to create dissension among Ishido and his allies through her death. That was Crimson Sky.
As far as seasons 2 and 3 - no spoilers here - but they weren't thought about until after this one was wrapped up. This season followed the book and ends where and how the book ends. But since everyone is based on historical characters, they have the events of the next several years of history to draw on for 2 and 3. edit - Clavell wrote other books based in Asia but later in history, and not directly related.
The season ends where the book ends They didn't have any plans for a season 2. So they will be creating season 2 on their own based loosely based on historical events
The announcement of more seasons did not come until a couple of weeks after the finale. I hope that is not a spoiler for anything... Y'all reactions just keep getting better and better. Thank you!

Ochiba means fallen leaf(leaves) in Japanese. It makes the poems a lot more meaningful when you know this.
That hurt
Hang on now. Last episode will tie everything up.
Mariko Sama was supposed to free the hostages or kill herself at sundown when the sky is red. Crimson Sky.
