It would be awesome if they would release the footage of the original ending to the movie. I mean the wikipedia article says the original ending was shown to an audience, so it exists on tape. Personally I think Ducky should have ended up with her. He would have appreciated her more than Blane.
PIP's original ending? Fact is for some strong enough reason the studio has issued videotape, laser-disc, plus various dvd editions, all without it. Those test screening audiences didn't prefer it. Years later in interview Molly said she thought the Ducky character was gay. Throughout all this we have the legend of Duck still intact. Maybe we need to start a new question other than Where's that Ending? Besides someone will eventually share it online. Eventually..
Today he might seem gay. But he was the perfect ladies man in the 80's, though geeky he was. I don't see why Molly would say that. She, unlike me, actually existed back then and would know. Oh well. Even though the legend wasn't the victor, he is a better man for caring enough to let her go. The legend of the Duck Man will always be remembered for that. Until that other ending is released lol
Pasta Master True, he reflected the time they lived in. I never got the impression he was gay (even watching it now-a-days). I always wanted them to end up together. I would love to see that original alternate ending. I don't know when it was shown to an audience, but the time period as well as the audience could have influenced the negativity of that ending... if it were shown to more people in a different time, it might actually do well.
Unfortunately that's not necessarily the case. When an ending (or any other scene) doesn't work for a test audience, requiring them to re-shoot and/or re-edit, those scenes can just end up on the cutting room floor like so much other unused footage, completely lost to history. Obviously, as we've all seen on some DVDs/blu-rays, deleted scenes were sometimes preserved, in various states of completion, but that varies from movie to movie. It's probably safe to say that if the scene existed in any state, anywhere, it would have been cleaned up and included in a must-have DVD/Blu-Ray that fans would rush out and buy, just to have that scene.
The original ending had Duckie ending up with Andie, but at the original screening, females wanted Andie to get the handsome guy. Guess they really don't want real love, like Duckie offered, just a hot guy. Duckie should have ended up with Andie. One of the biggest travesties in cinema, that she ended up with the untrustworthy Blane.
I really didn't understand his speech at the end about how she didn't believe in him. What the fuck did she do he was the one who avoided her he was an asshole.
I know! Right? Blaine was nothing but a wimpy, immature and ASSinine kid who's status was obviously more important to him. The ending of the film that got released completely ruined it. Btw I love all your furry babies. I'm a proud mother of two cats. :)
+Weidenkätzchen Aw thanks :) You know as a teen I totally loved Andrew McCarthy so then I probably rooted for him. But now I have known guys like that and love DUCKIE!!!
You're welcome. :) What a coincidence. At the time I saw that movie for the first time I had a crush on this guy who looked very much like Andrew McCarthy and I even managed to break the ice by asking him out, but my request was declined because he said he had a girlfriend. Now I know it's for the better that I never dated him because I later learned he's ultra conservative and that's a no-go for me. When I saw that movie (despite my crush at the time) I've been on Team Duckie ever since. I never had sympathy for Blaine.
I know the original ending had Duckie getting Andie, but even though John Hughes wanted that ending, producers and test audiences wanted her to end up with Blane. The producers thought that if she ended up with Duckie, it would send the message that rich and poor couldn't be together, so they changed the ending. The Duckie version does exist but has never been released and probably won't be. Which is stupid because Duckie should have won.
I really really want to see the original ending where she ends up with Duckie! Anyone know where I can see it? I'm desperate! Watching this video really made me want to see it.
The ending I saw at a preview showing had this ending, where they got together. I was quite shocked years later when I saw it on video and they had apparently released it with the ending where she went with Andrew Mcarthy. The one I saw was much better.
Actually, Duckie and Andie getting together was the ORIGINAL ending. I would love to see that one. What would've happened if Blaine HAD just totally given in to peer-pressure and never did the right thing. If Duckie just had stayed while the dreamboat just sunk... and let her down.
Dane Youssef Despite what Blaine said in the ending that was shown in cinemas and dvds he still looked and sounded really wimpy and unsure. If I were Andie I would've kicked Blaine to the curb.
I love it! Back when I was in high school, I loved the ending because I had a major crush on Andrew McCarthy, but now that I'm in my (yikes!) 40's, I have a whole new perspective on this movie. I just wonder what it would have been like with a different ending
this wasn't an alternate ending. this was just a remix of the original movie. very well made remix, but nothing new or different here. I really do wish they would release the alternate ending. it would be interesting to see. I love the duckman! always!
The funny thing... Andie and Duckie ARE a match. They ARE alike. But even a girl like Andie... wants a Blaine. It's just, even the geek-girl (the "Zoid") wants the handsome popular rich boy. The captain of the football team or the rebel biker. She wants the boy who's so far out of her league, she's not even playing the same sport.
Love it! This movie should have ended this way to begin with. - I know that it was meant as a "modern-day Romeo & Juliette" (although I don't believe that Romeo ever dissed Juliette purely for the sake of fitting in with his moronic buddies),- but I def. think it sends the wrong message; Go after the shallow, brain-washed popular guy who drops you because his rich friends don't approve & because it threatens his social standing rather than the true-blue, adoring geek who will love you forever.
Little bit o' trivia here---The original ending WAS Andie and Duckie winding up together, but audiences voted against it. They wanted the more realistic ending. Hughes still wanted that ending so he wrote "Some Kind of Wonderful." Ringwald said "no," feeling it was too much of the same thing. Hughes was so pissed off, he never worked with her again. And sadly... neither did anyone else of that caliber. --Still Remembering Molly, Dane Youssef

I would've preferred Jon Cryer to wind up with Annie Potts. Because I believe in real life, Blaine would've given in to peer pressure and just gone with someone from "his crowd." Andie would've gone to Duckie and realized they could always be there for each other. That's not only what would've happened in most movies--that's what would've happened it real life. The whole thing is a sort of fantasy. But... we still loved it, didn't we? --Glad To Help, Dane Youssef
When I was a kid I thought she should have been with Duckie. Ha! Now I am old enough to know that if your first instinct about a guy is platonic friendship, its usually right on the money. There typically isn't enough chemical attraction there to make it any good as a romantic thing.

The real ending was lame! The ending made this film crap besides Duckie and cool fashion. Andie and Duckie had too much chemistry for the ending to be like this. The relationship with Blaine and Andie would have failed. He only cared about being popular. She is stupid. If a guy is too ashamed to be with me I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole. I know it's just a movie but Duckie and Andie kissing at the end instead would have made it more romantic.

If being popular was really what he wanted he wouldn't have come back n apologized n admitted he was wrong. he wouldn't have admitted he was insecure. he was a man and admitted he loved her a d screwed up.
