THANK YOU SIR! I've been looking for videos on how to do this for hours. Everybody explained the hook up or showed it.they even went into daw to show you the setting .This was helpful and all but the one thing they never talk about was the actual keyboard settings. I want to use a vst and ever time i went to go use one i either got the keyboard sound that was plug in or i got nothing, or both vst sound mix together with the keyboard sound it was weird. After i saw you playing with other option for the output i too began looking for the option and end up finding what i needed .
Pretty good teaching; you should have been a teacher; many people make videos that don’t send the right message to the viewers ; and instead of helping, confuse the viewers, but your video is pretty good.
For Windows users like myself who spent a little while trying to figure this out, start by following this link. I finally got Ableton to recognize my Yamaha Steinberg USB connection. The order of install is really important, follow it very carefully. usa.yamaha.com/support/updates/yamaha_steinberg_usb_driver_for_win.html Hope this helps
Good stuff man. How about if you want to do most of the work on the Montage itself, rather than using it to merely export audio/MIDI to a DAW? Given that the Montage has no traditional sequencer, what would be the process of using something external to edit MIDI stored on the Montage? Would I have to laboriously export the MIDI via USB stick, import into the PC, edit, re-export etc, or is there a way of live-editing the MIDI held on the Montage, say by having it as a mountable, discoverable drive on the PC where I can literally just go in and edit the files?
🤔 If I get your question right, I wouldn't try to edit anything MIDI on the Montage. That's not it's big selling point it's not an arranger. I'd use any, MPC, Ableton Live, Logic, etc.
Vegan Piano Guy I know what you mean. I wanted to do the same but you can’t edit even at the most basic level with the Yamaha. Of course Motif or Roland FA aren’t arrangers and you can do most of the editing you need in the machine. AFAIK you need to laboriously drag and edit each midi recorded file on the USB stick. By the way, Montage/MODX don’t record MiDi and Audio simultaneously, sadly :( And you also can’t have it recording MiDi or audio in the background while you switch or tweak sounds on the screen. You can record 8 MiDi tracks in a single file sequentially on the Yamaha. Which, at least is something. You need to activate/deactivate the local key control of the relevant parts on the main/performance screen.
Props on the video. Exactly the info I was looking for and now I know I’m gonna get a montage 6. So basically setup like this, using a different instrument in the montage will go to the daw right?
It doesn't work with Ableton 11 in Mac Book Pro connected to the MODX. I cannot get past what you do on minute 1:23 and everything is setup just the same as you have it on the video.
Excellent and just what I needed. Was your sample rate at 128 on this? Just want to make sure since I did this in LIVE without issues unless you don't recommend it with the Montage audio interface? Thanks!
I was wondering how to upload multiple tracks with in the montage 8 (aka a song). Without having to replay the song for each individual track to be recorded into a DAW. Seems like there should be a driver … need to know ASAP.
Good stuff man. The lack of traditional sequencer is a daily annoyance and I'm wondering how to get round this. Do you know if I can use a sequencer like the Beatstep Pro to feed MIDI into the Montage, say a complex drum part? Also, in order to edit MIDI data stored on the MODX, do I manually have to export it to a PC via USB stick, or can I mount the Montage as a discoverable drive on the PC and live-edit the MIDI files that way, without the need for transfer? Thanks in advance.
Hello my friend! I'm trying to change performances on Yamaha Montage by Ableton Live, but I can't change banks... I'm using Midi clip and using the bank, sub-bank and prog options, but it doesn't work. (Just work programs till 127 of the first bank. When using bank or sub-bank the keyboard seems freeze). Do you know how does it work? Can you help me? PS: I use Logic too and there I can change banks using msb and lsb, but I don't know how it works in Ableton
Hi. Is there a way to send recorded midi From ableton to the Montage and get Arp midi back to ableton? It seems that you have to play on the montage to get are midi out of it. All their previous mo series keyboards could output back arp midi feed from the daw. What's missing??
Hi excellent explanations. But with my Montage the Arp recording only works having Midi I/O Mode set to 'Multi' in oppostite what you saying. Setting it to 'Single' will prevent from arp recording, this means the arpegiator is not switched directly after the keyboard. whats wrong?
hi there i got an moxf6 and I'm trying to get it to work in Ableton and its almost a year and im not doing great. I get to record and then I forget the settings and all hell breaks loose. I tried your method of setting the audio in from moxf6 that worked last week . my dad twin x is the output I did 2 beats now today im trying again and no sound is coming out.in usb mode im getting only one octave of sound. if I touch the keys to the right it flips from session view to arrangement view, it disables arm record and more crazy stuff.any help would be most appreciated
I'm sorry, I'm very inexperienced, and this is probably a really dumb question. but... I get to 1:06, and when I get to the audio preferences, it just says "No Input". There is no drop down tab or anything, it is just greyed out, as is "input config" under channel configuration. Is there some earlier step I'm missing?.
I have the same issue with modx. Recognizing the modx inputs but no sound. But using multi mode on modx with external instrument I can still use my interface and get modx sound and trigger all 16 channels individually with midi

Thanks. I taught for a number of years. It's important for a teacher to not impress but inspire.
Thanks very much for making this video. Super helpful.

Great job, just wondering what i should do if im using Ableton lite and dont have the "external instrument" rack?
thank you so much bro !

yeah Beatstep would work, anything MIDI should do the trick. Yeah you could record out MIDI arps and thing out to a DAW

I figured it out, with a friend's help. The answer, in case anyone else is in an similar situation, was "update your drivers".
does this work similarly with a motif xs8?
