Just FYI The small modification on the hitch to make it fit a wider variety of hitch receivers is now standard on all our hitch mounts going forward. Also we hav ea cool new attachment coming out soon for the hitch mount ... stay tuned! Great video, very entertaining and I love the brutal honesty, and I love me a cheeseplate also.....hehehe
Found your channel yesterday and you're easily becoming my favorite channel due to the actual experience you have on productions vs a lot of these other RUclipsrs whose experience doesn't come from clientele just making videos on youtube haha, no hate to them though
THANK YOU! I've been waiting for you to post these videos since I stumbled onto the one where you were dangling the Crane 3 and Komodo out the window while the car was driving down the road. I am in the same position of needing to build a vehicle rig for some client work but I'm totally new to vehicle rigging and totally restricted by the budget. Thank you for sharing ALL the details. This stuff is so difficult to figure out or to find enough answers before having to commit budget funds, especially if you don't have access to Key Grips or rental houses to rent most expensive components for these rigs. This video gave me hope.YOU CAN DO IT! Can't wait for the next episode!
Was just looking for some rigging advice, did not expect this to be as entertaining as it was. Nicely done, you've bent my arm into subscribing. Education and entertainment in one package, big thumbs up dude.
I absolutely HATE controlling my gimbal with the Mimic when in a vehicle. It's terrible. Also....first time test w/ a vehicle rig using a Komodo like....no big deal :D :D love it. Great advice on the power of the gimbal I decided to try Maniac mode on my MoVI and.....it basically made my footage virtually unusable when on the Cloudmount. I had a shoot yesterday where I turned off Maniac and lowered the stiffness on each axis and it was a smoother shot.
Good to hear it helped you as well. The next episode will show some interesting results with just the isolator off the CloudMount and a pretty sizeable Komodo package.
This was so rad Dan, love what your doing on this channel! Been using the crane s pro on my raven shooting the latest bliss n eso music vid, comes out next week, works a treat and pull focus with the Wi-Fi transmitter to iPad .. can’t believe it’s workable... Be good to catch up again , waiting on my order for komodo.
Nice man! I haven’t had much luck with the Zhiyun lens motor stuff but that’s mostly because of my undiagnosed ADHD. Good to hear that it’s workable in the real world. You’ll love Komodo - it’s a 4” cube of destiny.
Have you ever tried solidly mounting the camera on the vehicle? I used a solid bullbar mount and a solid in-car mount for off-road stuff (rocky tracks, river crossing etc) and the look is quite natural even without any post-stabilisation. On-road, this should work quite well, though of course you don't have the ability to control the camera movement. But if a fixed mount is OK, then mounting the camera solidly might work.
Yeah after mounting our moco slider without isolation and seeing those results I’m definitely into the hard mount for certain applications. New ep that just went up shows us testing it: DIY Vehicle Rigging PT3 aka How to rig a MoCo Slider on a Car in just 74 easy steps!
great video and interesting to watch! i think the wind threw off the crane 3s as i had something similar chasing skater with a lot of wind around and a mattbox on it, however it did a great job.
Thanks man. The next episode will have us chasing a skater as well (or him chasing us more accurately). For that one I had the tow hitch mount off the back of my boxy van which made a pretty great windbreak!
Yeah I’ve got a ceiling mounted lighting track system in my little home studio. It’s got about 6 of those pantographs you can see the GAFs mounted too. Super handy for placing lights and mics in your scene without cluttering the floor with stands and cables.
Unfortunately I didn’t have any more of the cable receivers to attach to the CloudMount. Do you know if it’s possible to get more than 8 cables on that system?
Hey, great video and example of how powerful this gimbal is. Just wondering if you know dose the wireless receiver get power from the hand control unit? Or are you stuck with the battery life of the wireless receiver? I have heard the hand control unit does not power the wireless receiver.
Yeah the hand control unit does pass power thru to the receiver. I haven’t really tested how much power it can provide or battery life. But on mine I definitely can see a charge indicator on the receiver when I connect it to the motion sense remote.
@@graetzmedia thanks for clarifying that. Im currently working on a stabilised car mount system right now and have the Crane 3S Pro and have high hopes of it working. Though im only using a Sony A7S iii to keep everything as light weight as possible and to cut down on wind resistance. I also dabble in custom-built motion control systems and am local to Brisbane. I like your take on production and testing gear to try and find a somewhat budget solution. Sometimes things don't always work perfectly but if you can get a usable shot then that's all that matters. I'm exactly the same when it comes to my camera rigging. You should check my V1 motion control rig I built in my garage to shoot high-speed tabletop stuff. I also have a V2 rig that will provide very similar results as the BOLT system. It's currently being built. I feel like you would appreciate it's complexity for a budget motion control system. Great video. Your footage looks incredible - Just have an odd question . The shot were youth driving with your family what were the camera settings? 25fp 24fp or 23.976fp and what shutter angle was it? Thanks again this is a great video.
So many wrong things in here. Let's start with the mount - usually when you grip a car you ALWAYS want a 3-point grip. Also, basic rule says - ALWAYS put shiny tennis balls on the outer margin of your rig - so everyone around you could notice you have a rig outside your car. Shock absorbing mounts are okay for shooting anything outside your car - say another car, streets etc. When you look into your car - you always want a hard mount, this will ensure the camera position is fixed with the car and doesn't go in another direction the car suspension does. This wobble is caused by two things - first the shock absorber (besides, which is working really bad with your rig), second the gimbal itself. Gimbals are okay for some things, and are not for a lot of others. In my practice I always go hard fix when looking into the car, or at least a tripod head. Gimbals tend to have inner vibrations caused by car vibrations and usually don't work for shots pointed inside the same car they are gripped on. When you mount something to the door face or a hood - you always want 2 additional points and a strip - to minimize the native vibrations of the door or the hood. The thing is the door or hood metal is not designed to hold additional weight and due to the face size they are going to wobble themself. That's why you lock off two additional points to eliminate the wobble of the metal on big faces. Now the shock absorber - usually you want something like a tranquilizer with adjustable rubber rings - you test the weight, speed, road surface - and then add or eliminate rubber bands. Shock absorbers made of only metal wires usually suck. I've never met a single one that was working great - they only make your camera/lens travel short distances in the air which makes your footage suck, especially on slow speed where you experience a variety of G-forces. Finally, you always try to put a metal wire for safety of the rig - even if it falls of, it should not ever end up on the road. This might cause a crash or damage to someone's health.
Awesome info here man. I’m definitely not an expert on vehicle rigging. I’m sharing this content pretty transparently as a filmmaker that needed to learn about it for practical reasons. Super appreciate the detail you’ve provided here. I was looking at upgrading to a Killshock but based on what you’ve said here I’ll look into a tranquilliser as well. We did have additional bracing on our moco system. And on all the other rigs we used safety straps at the very least. But definitely more to learn and plenty more testing needed.
Good tip. There is way too much of my verbose melon in this first part as I wanted to lay out the groundwork. Lots more the road in the next couple I’ll have out soon.
by the way, ia really want to buy the komodo, but iam a little conern with the low light, i saw a lot of noisy footage overthere. maybe is compression, maybe people dont know how to use it, but thats my conern, what do you think?

you should put the gimbal on a jib kind of setup so it has an extra point of vertical stabilization, or at least some kind of spring system like a stadicam vest has.
Yeah I’m eyeing off a Black Arm or equivalent. Gets to the point where it makes more sense to hire a good grip. But I’m a nerd so I’ll probably try it 🤓
My takeaway from this was "you're probably gonna have to buy more gear" (10:31)
