Mommy Lau: Brush off the ice from the squid. LOL - Not gonna pay extra for that ice on the scale! And asking the cashier about the Senior Discount day. Classic Mom moves!

HAHAHA yes #TeamRanch99 - that's how I've always said it too! I would've said it in all of the voiceovers and text but didn't feel like explaining myself lol.

Thank you Randy . You are so inspiring and thank you for sharing your Chinese traditions. I’m Chinese from Hong Kong but was unfortunate to not have been able to understand a lot of the traditions due to a variety of reasons but you are helping me understand my culture better. i love your parents, they are so adorable. love to see the older generation cook and share their wisdom. and i love the way your day said "all law", just like my dad!!

It's very considerate of you to put in the time stamps, I know that's extra work :) I can't wait for the knife skills video - I've always been in awe of my mom wielding a huge cleaver to cut everything. I'm looking forward to many more videos :)
Awww thanks for the love! I hope you get to reunite with them soon! Glad you appreciate all of the little details like time stamps :) Excited to share our knife skills video with you and more!
Just found your channel and I want to say I really appreciate how well made your videos are! Like seriously well made and I love the wisdom from your fam
This was a great watch - I learned so much! Appreciate the extra effort you put in to explain stuff like the part about myoglobin as well as providing links and resources to organic and humane ways to purchase the meat. Looking forward to more great content!
I just wanted to thank you for this video. Not just for your parents’ great tips and guidance on purchasing foods, but also for sharing the priceless time spent with your parents. I used to take my father to the market in the years before he passed. He was a stickler for expiration dates which has stuck with me. His vision was failing and I have a permanent memory of looking at him at the far end of the bread isle peering intently at the ends of the loaves of his favorite bread for the latest expiation date. Had the loaf maybe 2 inches from his eyes. Despite his eyes and other challenges, he stuck with the kinds of rules your folks are teaching you here. Please take every moment you can with them, treasure every second, even if it’s frustrating and you’ll have a treasure trove of wonderful memories when they’ve gone to the great shopping market in the sky. Sadly, it can happen in a flash. Thanks again and all the best to you and your wonderful family.
I love this video! I have never really known how to properly select meat, but now I do! I can't wait for the upcoming videos and maybe I will attempt to set up a hotpot for my family! Thanks again!
Love the way your parents communicate during groceries. Exactly same as how my parents communicate with each other. My dad was a vegetarian chef for 25 years. And he always comment on the stuff that my mum picks. “Why you pick this?” “That’s better”... usually in the other families, the mother is the one has the says during groceries shopping... but not in my family
Hahahaha, can't wait for the fruit/veg video where Auntie and Uncle will take half an hour to buy the best yu choy, bok choy, long beans, apples, shallots, etc. To this day, I'm the weirdo in the produce section looking over every single string bean I put into my bag. Edit: oho, I spoke too soon, I didn't see the segment on produce XD oh well, I still demand a fruit/veg video!
I remember being a teenager forced to pick out bean by bean I was so jealous of the other customers who just came and shoved handfuls of green beans in a bag!
@@kyungseo6908 I literally experienced that with chilies last week! I was picking out the nicest ones, and I noticed that a guy was waiting for me to finish. I let him go so that he wouldn't wait like 10 minutes, and he scooped out what must have been 4 pounds of chilies! And not wimpy chilies, but the Thai bird's eye chilies!! No choice but to stan.
@@emmaghows3841 Ahaha gotta make sure we get the best ones! I was tempted to edit out more of my parents picking out vegetables but I was like.. this is part of my actual experience. Don't want to deprive people of getting to wait for their parents picking out the best ones lol.
U are so lucky son Lau. Enjoys with parents. My parents passed away over ten years. And I living in West Virginia USA. My supermarket not that much choice of Chinese food. Yes. I m Hong Kong 🇭🇰 Chinese. Love to watch your video. Remind me lots of Chinese food.
OK I just want to say that this was a REALLY helpful video for a white lady who is recently getting into Chinese cooking. I have so many ingredients in my house that I bought to make 1 recipe and now I don't know how to use them for other dishes - that could be an idea for a video? Maybe like a trip to the grocery store with your parents talking about common ingredients that westerners might not be so familiar with and telling us how to use them etc.? They talked about the taro root and that was very helpful as I am not familiar with it! Anyway loved it, your parents are so cute and funny. My mom is very careful to check all the receipts as well must be a mom thing!! :)
Not many Chinese parents share these things with their kids. They just kind of get the job done super efficiently without the patience or time to really talk through everything. Therefore these videos are kind of invaluable to Chinese born westernised younger generations. Thank you mummy and daddy Lau!
2 of my favorite stores. I'm so happy I found this channel. We have a Japanese grocery closer to us, but once in a while I make the trek out to the Milpitas Ranch 99. I think the produce is better than I get at the American supermarkets.
I love the gentle fun poking with the "show them" counter. ;) Sadly in the US, the organic labels are largely useless. Small farms that are working to raise their animals well aren't going to be able to pay for the certification and aren't able to supply the massive chain stores. Rather than looking for a sticker that is not properly managed, look for a local butcher or farm that can supply meat. Again, time, money, resources all contribute to the ability to do this as a consumer.
Ahaha yes I had fun with that as well. That's a great point, I should have made a note about that in the video as well to shop local and support smaller farms. Do you think the organic label is better than no label at all?
Hello I am a great fan of this channel and I live in London UK. Your dad is great chef and I hope hus vast knowledge and experience will be passed on down yo next generation. I too enjoy cooking and my two boys love my cooking. Happy cooking and thank you for sharing to Lau's 👪
Mommy and Daddy Lau’s slight bickering reminds me of my parents lol Anyways I’m trying to relearn cantonese/toisanese along with getting some cooking tips so this channel is helping a lot. Keep it up!
Haha so happy to hear that! I think not all people get their bickering. Glad you can see a bit of your parents in them 🥰 Appreciate you watching and your support!
Mommy and Daddy Lau are adorable in their matching outfits! They've got the senior "dress alike" thing down pat. Also, I love when your dad wants to teach you something he always addresses you as Son first. It's so cute. I wish we had big asian supermarkets like 99 Ranch and H-Mart where I live. The money I save there always gets negated by the gas I spend going there (the closest asian supermarket I have is 50-80 miles depending on which one I go to). I usually go to a small market here in town but there's not a lot of produce, refrigerated, or frozen product. It's more important to keep my smaller market open anyway, especially now, that way I don't have to drive 50 miles every time I need the basics. :) Looking forward to the fishball recipe! I love throwing a few in my soups. This video is really informative for when I can go back to buying fresh meat again.
Awww thank you for all the kind words! They are so adorable. I kept smiling behind the camera at how cute they were haha. Yes they definitely need more of those around the world! We're grateful to be able to have more access to them. Or, hopefully in the next few years, it becomes more affordable to ship those types of groceries at longer distances. That's good though that you're supporting a small business, especially in these times! Excited to share our fishball recipe and others :) Thanks for all the love!
This is my favorite video from your channel. Very informative! The older generation Chinese have a lot of tricks when it comes to buying quality meat. I buy most of my meat at Costco too
I live in Auckland New Zealand and I am just like mommy Lau always check our receipt before leaving and is true sometimes the checkout counter just scan without looking at the brands and I really loves watching daddy Lau cooking at home and his cooking is so simple to follow.
So grateful you enjoyed watching both mom and dad! You are smart to check your receipt like mom! This is really something we should all learn to do 🙇🏻♂️❤️
Yassss 🙌 Hot pot is so fun. Glad you are enjoying the videos. Can't wait for you to see our next and final one that includes fresh made fish balls. It's soooo good 😋
This video is not only beautiful but so informational. Amazing personal attention has been brought to all aspects of this video. I truly love it so much! I want to go shopping with your parents. So much fun!
Oh yay! Thanks so much Amy, we are so happy to hear that! So grateful that you found our channel and can’t wait to share many more recipes with you! ❤️
Please do more videos like this where you go around Asian market and teach about all foods...sauces, noodles, produce, etc, and how they're used, how to buy, etc! Love this!! As I shop around Asian markets, there are so many things I'm curious about but don't know what they are or how they're used!
This really was lots of fun! Your parents are certainly very cute! Great tips here! You know I've actually never been to a Costco before so it was exciting to see what it's like. I know I'd get so lost in there, look at all that selection!!
Wow! I had no idea Costco sold the cut of meat for pai gwut. Going to have to get some next time. Thanks for taking us shopping! Can you do more shopping trips showing what a typical trip looks like and what kind of meals will be prepped with the ingredients?
I'm a Filipino residing in Canada and I'm so impress the video presentation that you have shown and I've learned a lot. Thank you for sharing. God bless you and your family as well
When Daddy Lau says mm goi heung li! And then says no when you ask if he knows the guy. LOL Also, super looking forward to the homemade fishballs video ^_^
I love the way I learn cantonese at the same time as cooking...your parents remind me of my grandparents... and parents as they go through a market... there's a channel you should check out called Chinese or cantonese catch phrase that I loved
Great video! so glad i found this channel! I'd love to see more videos like this grocery shopping haul and learn how your parents pick their groceries, what to look for, etc.
Thanks so much Mishy! We are so grateful to hear you enjoyed this video and how I edited everything. Can't wait to continue sharing many more recipes with you! ❤️
It's an honor to hear that our videos remind you of your parents. We can’t wait to continue sharing many more recipes with you and hope that each new video brings back even more happy memories of them ❤️
I was charged extra from Costco ALL THE TIME! Either it’s double charged, or discount wasn’t taken down. Mommy Lau is absolutely smart! I’ll start doing the same at Costco now!
Hey bud, I feel a kindred spirit with you. My mom is the chef in my family and our hometown is Sun Wue (Canto) or Xing Hue (Mandarin) which as next to Toishan. I've been learning some dishes from my Ma but I enjoy learning from your father so I can surprise my Ma with a few things she may not have known. Thanks for the amazing content. My daughter should be around your son's age, too. My family now resides in Nevada but we are originally from CA. If your family ever visits Las Vegas in the future please reach out! It'd be fun to connect!
Silly son asking why the shopping is at 2 places. Only lazy shoppers get everything from one place! I’m so excited about this series! I’ve been curious about grocery and cookware details. Thanks!
hahaha your dad with the cilantro "just grab any!" very informative video! from the little vocab pop up with the jyutping to learning how to recognize quality meat and veg, its really helpful. on a usual grocery run, do your parents buy for the week or month? I have a bad habit of buying ingredients for things I'm excited to make but I don't have the time/energy to before it goes bad :( I'm trying to learn how to gage how long to keep ingredients and when I should buy to make
Ahaha yes so classic lol. They usually buy it for the week or buy meat in bulk and freeze them. I am the same haha, some of our stuff sits for way too long in our fridge!
Im not chinese but i have chinese friends who now live in another country. Im trying to make hotpot with zero experience. Thank you for this video and for the subtitles. There is nothing better than learning how to pick and cook chinese food from chinese parents, very authentic, sending love to your parents. Subscribing to this wonderful informative channel! xiexie
always love the educational aspect of your videos! thank you for taking the time to do the research and explaining it to us in such a great concise way!
When your mom went back to return the items, I remember being embarrassed by my mom when I was growing up being 1st gen, but now I'm like that. I'm still a little shy and embarrassed sometimes, but when I do go back to exchange/return items, I get annoyed because of the other person's reaction. This has opened my eyes. I love these videos!
I never had this type of relationship with my parents. You are so lucky, your parents are amazing! Thank you for sharing their knowledge with us. I've always scratched my head when picking meat. Btw, we share the same surname, we maybe related 😄
This video is SUPER helpful and there were a bunch of funny parts too! "Why are we going to two stores?" cracked me up at the very beginning because that was me asking that question every single time I get dragged grocery shopping with my parents for my whole life. I didn't know what the water was in meat packages so that was a huge revelation! I also realized there was NO way I was going to slice up all those filets and making my own fish balls so please thank your parents for showing us the precut and premade items at the store so I know what to look for at ranch 99. I have been really interesting in making my own hot pot using my cuisinart electric fondue pot which can heat up broth to boiling. I know you will show us how to make homemade hot pot broth, but do you have any favorite store bought pre-made broths that you like if you are short on time and uh, are lazy?
Awww thank you Courtney! We're so glad you laughed and learned as well :) That was our goal! Yeah I will include some pre-made broth options in the 3rd video :) There's no harm in buying everything premade! Time is also money haha. Significantly less prep and potential stress as well.
@Made With Lau Oh good! You all are so incredibly thorough and have such great camera and sound quality, it should be on tv! I also rifle through a pile of meat or taro to find the best one and I honestly don't understand the people that just pick up the first one that they see! Haha! It made me feel so proud to be chinese and taught to shop that way. I don't like very spicy broth, so I hope your dad can suggest good flavors for us that can't handle very spicy! I am so excited to see the next video!
@@CourtneyinSF Thank you so much for the kind words Courtney!! We really appreciate the love :) We don't really do spicy flavors at our house either - the broth is really simple and light which I love.
@@MadeWithLau today my mom gifted me for Christmas with a small electric hot pot that holds 2 L, perfect for one person! So now I am extra excited to see the rest of your hot pot series!
The way Uncle & Auntie Lau bicker and choose stuff at the supermarket... is almost exactly like how my parents use to bicker and choose stuff as well lol. I learned how to choose and identify the freshest meat & vegetable through them though, so for that I'm thankful lol.
...I never check the receipt😅 Where polite Canadian upbringing dominates over my Chinese roots. Loved the meat buying tips. Can't wait to see more from this series!
Please ask your what cut of beef is most tender for Chinese stir fry? Also, how to marinate the beef to make it more tender. Because when you see a good deal on price of meat and you can’t resist a bargain I believe there are ways to prepare and use in the right dishes. Thank you for sharing this video it’s funny because your parents interaction remind me so much of my parents, father in law and your typical Chinese seniors. Sadly, many elderly love ones have past away or have dementia, memory issues that they now can’t share their traditional recipes, Chinese traditions and life stories of their roots. Thank you for making these videos it is a valuable resource and legacy you are sharing. My kids love Chinese food and they have an interest in making their favorite dishes. Sometimes they want to make dishes we don’t know how to make or have the recipes. Keep making the videos. Love this channel.
Great video! I like seeing your parents buy those gigantic taro. One is too big for making the taro cake. So when they mentioned steaming the taro, what does Daddy steam it with? Will there be another taro recipe?
Yes definitely have more taro recipes in the future! When my mom steams it at home she likes it simple kind of like having steamed potatoes to snack on 😋
Wow, I loved this video.Your parents are awesome. Beautiful family. It was a great idea filming and sharing all this important information. My spouse Alex grabs items at the market and he likes to buy the ones that are already cut. I tell him is more expensive. We also shop at Costco, so when we go, I’ll practice your tips. It’s a blessing to learn from you.👍🏼❤️🙏👨🍳
Aw, thank you so much for watching and your kind words Inocencio! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed watching this video. We hope the next time you go to Costco or a regular store you are able to find delicious pieces of meat! Wishing you and you Alex a Happy New Year filled with many blessings ❤️🙏🏼

Ahaha yes I had fun with that as well. That's a great point, I should have made a note about that in the video as well to shop local and support smaller farms.
Do you think the organic label is better than no label at all?
I love your parents ❤ it feels like I'm with my parents ❤ ...
So happy to hear that my parents remind you of yours 🥰 Really special to record these videos and happy to know they bring you joy!
Kids and Costco can learn a lot of things from this video. Getting feedback directly from consumer.
super valuable info and your parents are adorable to watch together thank for these videos
Your parents are adorable how they call each other mommy and daddy. Reminds me of my auntie and uncle, they do the same.
Reminds me of shopping with my grandparents ❤
Hello I am a great fan of this channel and I live in London UK. Your dad is great chef and I hope hus vast knowledge and experience will be passed on down yo next generation. I too enjoy cooking and my two boys love my cooking. Happy cooking and thank you for sharing to Lau's 👪
I loved your Costco shopping trip and pointers on how to select meat… Thank you …
Thank you Lau family you vid make me smile and thinking of my parents this vid will be priceless
Mommy and Daddy Lau’s slight bickering reminds me of my parents lol
Anyways I’m trying to relearn cantonese/toisanese along with getting some cooking tips so this channel is helping a lot.
Looking forward to the fishball recipe!
Thank you, Daddy Lau for sharing so much! Love you guys!
Thank you so much for the kind words Erik! Appreciate your support 🙏🏼
Just found your channel and I am in love. All your videos are so down to earth, helpful and informative. Please keep going!
This is my favorite video from your channel. Very informative! The older generation Chinese have a lot of tricks when it comes to buying quality meat. I buy most of my meat at Costco too
this video is SO useful! i always get overwhelmed at the chinese supermarket, good to know what to look for
Awww thank you! We're so grateful to be a resource for you :)
Very good, your parents wore medical gloves and i noticed that your dad had 2 masks. It was good that they are so cautious. Linda from HK
Yes! They are being super cautious. Mom worked in the hospital so she's always making sure we are all safe 🥰
This is really something we should all learn to do 🙇🏻♂️❤️
You dad not just experience on cooking but knowledgeable on each products for cooking that a plus for having parents like that
Thank you so much 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♀️ We are so grateful that you are enjoying our family's videos and learning from my parents!

Oh yay! Thanks so much Amy, we are so happy to hear that! So grateful that you found our channel and can’t wait to share many more recipes with you! ❤️
This was an amazing & fun video . Love your channel. Learn so much from your family. Thank you for taking the time to share your story.
Please do more videos like this where you go around Asian market and teach about all foods...sauces, noodles, produce, etc, and how they're used, how to buy, etc! Love this!! As I shop around Asian markets, there are so many things I'm curious about but don't know what they are or how they're used!
loving your videos. your parents are adorable. this shopping trip video is a great learning lesson.
Thank you so much for the love Susan! We're so grateful to share with you and to be a resource for you :)
This really was lots of fun! Your parents are certainly very cute! Great tips here! You know I've actually never been to a Costco before so it was exciting to see what it's like. I know I'd get so lost in there, look at all that selection!!
Oh wow! You'll have to go sometime. They also have A LOT of free food samples haha. You can literally each lunch there.
Wow! I had no idea Costco sold the cut of meat for pai gwut. Going to have to get some next time. Thanks for taking us shopping! Can you do more shopping trips showing what a typical trip looks like and what kind of meals will be prepped with the ingredients?
That’s a great idea! I hadn’t thought of documenting a general trip (without a specific recipe in mind). Thanks for the suggestion!
Just discovered your channel, your parents are so adorable. I would shop with them any day!
I'm a Filipino residing in Canada and I'm so impress the video presentation that you have shown and I've learned a lot. Thank you for sharing. God bless you and your family as well
Thank you so much Norma! We are so grateful that you found our channel, and we can’t wait to continue sharing many more recipes with you! ❤️
When Daddy Lau says mm goi heung li! And then says no when you ask if he knows the guy. LOL
Also, super looking forward to the homemade fishballs video ^_^
Hahaha yeah! I really thought they knew each other. Excited to share our recipe with you!
White wine is 白葡萄酒。If someone says 白酒 they are usually referring to the local rice wine which is a lot stronger.
Thank you for the answer! Very helpful. I will be sure to let them know :)
Mr Lau I love watching your cooking I’m learning a lot
Definitely using these tips, I always wondered how the pros choose meat and fish!
Amazing! We're so grateful to be a resource for you :)
I would love to watch more shopping videos!
Awww yay! So glad to hear :) We are excited to share more with you!
I love the way I learn cantonese at the same time as cooking...your parents remind me of my grandparents... and parents as they go through a market... there's a channel you should check out called Chinese or cantonese catch phrase that I loved
Thanks you for the video. I enjoyed it so much. Your parents are great like mine. Love 💕
Aww yay so happy to hear that Mery! Love that my parents remind you of yours 🥰
Great video! so glad i found this channel! I'd love to see more videos like this grocery shopping haul and learn how your parents pick their groceries, what to look for, etc.
This is a super helpful video. Thank you for your meticulous editing!
Thanks so much Mishy! We are so grateful to hear you enjoyed this video and how I edited everything. Can't wait to continue sharing many more recipes with you! ❤️
What great information! Thank you. Your parents remind me so much of mine....I miss them, they are long gone.
It's an honor to hear that our videos remind you of your parents. We can’t wait to continue sharing many more recipes with you and hope that each new video brings back even more happy memories of them ❤️
This is so fun! Love the trip to the grocery stores as a switch up to the usual show :)
Thanks Keidi! So glad you enjoyed it. Will be sure to do more of these!
OMG I love Grocery Shopping. I love both your parents too. Reminded me going grocery shopping with my parents.
Aw yay! Happy this video could remind you of your parents ❤️
I was charged extra from Costco ALL THE TIME! Either it’s double charged, or discount wasn’t taken down. Mommy Lau is absolutely smart! I’ll start doing the same at Costco now!
Right on Ada! Mommy Lau will be so happy to hear this ❤️
@@MadeWithLau the intelligence of moms 🤣🤣
Thanks!
Ahahaha so true! Thanks for the love :) So glad we're able to be a resource for you :)
hahaha your dad with the cilantro "just grab any!"
very informative video! from the little vocab pop up with the jyutping to learning how to recognize quality meat and veg, its really helpful. on a usual grocery run, do your parents buy for the week or month? I have a bad habit of buying ingredients for things I'm excited to make but I don't have the time/energy to before it goes bad :( I'm trying to learn how to gage how long to keep ingredients and when I should buy to make
Ahaha yes so classic lol. They usually buy it for the week or buy meat in bulk and freeze them. I am the same haha, some of our stuff sits for way too long in our fridge!
Great series! I’ll try hot pot for my small family! Ty! For this!
"When you buy fish, son..."
Dads everywhere resonating with this kind of lead-in.
Thank you so much! We are so grateful that you found our channel, and we can’t wait to continue sharing many more recipes with you! ❤️
Gotta love our moms!! Thanks for the love and for sharing :) Grateful to share with you!
Thank you so much for the recipes that my mother and father taught me years ago I have since forgotten
Oh yay! We are so happy to hear that Rose! We hope that when you make them, the dishes taste just like how your parents made them 🥰
Love the interactions and adventures at Costco and 99 Ranch. Can’t wait to check out the hot pot series :)
Thanks so much Fang! Can't wait for you to watch the whole series🙌
This is my favourite channel on RUclips now😘 been watching a lot of your videos to cook for my Chinese bf 😆
@@CourtneyinSF exciting! we hope it brings you many great memories :) excited to share the rest of the series with you!
The way Uncle & Auntie Lau bicker and choose stuff at the supermarket... is almost exactly like how my parents use to bicker and choose stuff as well lol. I learned how to choose and identify the freshest meat & vegetable through them though, so for that I'm thankful lol.
So happy my parents bickering reminds you of your parents too. Got to love them 🥰
...I never check the receipt😅 Where polite Canadian upbringing dominates over my Chinese roots.
Loved the meat buying tips. Can't wait to see more from this series!
Ahaha yeah same here. Good life lessons from my mom! Thank you for watching :) We're excited to continue sharing with you!
love your parents wonderful generous people .
Love your parents. Tell them that I really enjoy watching them and learning from them. :)
We will do Mz Elitez! Thanks so much for tuning in and watching. We can't wait to share more with you!
Very nice video and so cute, both your parents.....sweet too!
WOW. you really put the receipt phase at Costco in this. 😅
people need to know about mom the OG
@@MadeWithLau #CanYouShowThem
BTW i'm literally laughing my ass off right now.
@@MadeWithLau It made me remember why I hated shopping with my mom as a kid D:
@@jerrypeter1544 good Jerry. how are you doing today?
omg my heart
So happy that my parents can remind you of yours 🥰
There is not more nutritional value in organic food, it is only a personal preference. Love the vids!
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed 😊
I love to learn from your Dad's extensive cooking knowledge and your meticulous research and editing. Thank you!
Oh wow, thank you so much Diane! That means a lot to hear you say 🥰
I love how they bicker in the grocery store. There's such a nice homey vibe to this :)
Awww yes me too! They're so great :) I especially love capturing those moments and being able to share them with you and the community!
