  • This weeks Motorweek Retro Reaction video is one of my favorite cars from the 90s... the Mazda MX-6.
Honestly, I think this car is chronically underappreciated and I loved it, and should have never talked myself out of one.

I JUST saw one of these yesterday sitting at a house 2 blocks away. Bought back fond memories as I really liked them when they were first introduced.

I have a v6. Everyone loves this car. Last compliment was, "When I see your car go by, I think 'wow'."

I saw this car at the New York Auto Show when this update was introduced and between this and the Lexus SC 300 these were the two best looking cars by far. This car in gold is breathtaking.

Was boring then is boring now. The Probe looks so much more exciting. This falls under the same category as the Dodge Avenger of the era. Is meh at best.

Makes me think about the 2000 Mercury Cougar.

Back then Ford partially owned Mazda, so they had Ford-badged Mazda products. As a result, Mazda's quality/reliability wasn't as good as the other Japanese automakers

In 2006 or so I was driving a 2003 bm 325i(sport) and thinking it was time to move on before it got expensive. A local dealer had this gen mazda mx6. They were planning to wholesale it. But I took it out. Miles were high. It drove great. I could have bought it for $2000. But it was amazing how tiny it seemed by then, which isn't necessarily bad. It was low to the ground. Smallish inside (as a coupe should be). It was in so so shape. I didn't buy it. But I think about it now and then. A year or so later I got a 2003 mazda3 5 door which was a great car and held a lot of stuff when moving my GF now wife. Dad had a 1981 626. 1983 626 (for 20 years). I had a 1990 rx7 convertible for 17 years (wish I had that back) and now a 2011 cx9. Mom had a 1985 626, 1988 mx6 (nonturbo). Stepdad is on his second cx5. We buy other brands. But Mazda is where I look first. I like the underdog.

I had a 93 LS 5MT with Hunter green exterior and tan leather interior. Perfect car, gave up at 190k miles due to oil consumption issues common on these at high miles. Ended up doing a KLZE swap and enjoying it a bit longer.

I always thought the second gen Probes looked much nicer than these. These look like a mashup of about 5 different 90's coupes, very bland and generic styling.

I was in college in the 90’s and I admired the Probe for being modern but I loved the odd shape of this Mazda. I remember the ad showing it as a future classic car inside of an hourglass, and I thought that that was correct that someday someone would want to buy this as a retro car . I think when the 93 Integra was released it became my new favorite. But I did not like the sliding electronic seatbelts in the Integra. I remember the Neon, the new Mustang, the bulky looking Camaro and all these new car models shared a subtle aerodynamic theme but they were never ever futuristic looking or modern for that time. I think in the early 2000s European cars were more modern and it’s taken 20 years for the domestic cars in the US to start looking that modern mostly because Honda and Toyota have kept it really simple and bland all these years.

I haven't seen one of these on the road for at least 15 years, probably more like 20. I wonder how many that were sold were properly appreciated, cared for, and still running (if rarely spotted). I always loved the styling and still do. I couldn't afford one when they were new, but I kind of wish I'd sought a used one out in the late '90s. Considering the reverence for Miatas and RX-7s from this era, I'm surprised the MX-6 (and even more unique MX-3) didn't get more love.

Great looking car. LH comment - cab forward design models of the time. Two friends had them. Loved them.

The Mazda 'K' engine, all small V6's, were great revving machines. Japan alone got the best tune. While the rest of the world got a -DE "tune" all of the JDM engines were the -ZE version. The KL-ZE had about 40 more horsepower than the KL-DE versions for a few reasons. Although the displacement was the same, the KL-ZE had more durations on the cams, higher compression due to

Regarding your comment of the rear seats and use by a young professional, I was 30 and this was my FIRST BRAND NEW CAR I ever bought. but a year later we were awaiting our first child and after testing car seats and stroller space it was not going to work so I traded it in for a new 1994 Nissan Pathfinder. I really liked my MX-6 it was an LS with the 5sp it was Green with .....TAN interior John!

I agree with you Jon. I think the "touch of LH" comes from the width of the vehicle.
