- This week's Motorweek Retro Review reaction video is one of my favorite mid-sized competitors of the 90s- the redesigned 626!
Nice interior, nice ride and handling, and what I consider to be the best looking exterior of the Japanese offerings.

Oscillating vents !

My high school friend had a cool 99 with those vents back and forth. Great car
My dad and step mom had one of these when I was a kid. Their's was the same exact year and color, actually. Here's a funny story about that car that happened once while coming back from a camping trip - I was riding with my dad in his Dodge Ram 50 truck while my step mom and sisters were driving ahead of us in the car. At one point my dad (who was a notoriously distracted driver) got distracted while fiddling with a road map and didn't notice my step mom breaking ahead of him. But I noticed and shouted at him to slow down. Unfortunately by the time he looked up and saw them stopping it was too late and he plowed into the back of the car. Needless to say he was very upset at first, but my sisters and I thought it was hilarious. We roasted him for years about rear ending his own car... 🤣😂
lol. Thanks for sharing the memory!
I did something similar many years ago. came home and parked my car behind my Jeep Cherokee. Got the family, loaded into the Jeep, and promptly backed into the front of the car I had just parked.
One of my biggest 'duh' moments!
Great show Jon ! The Mazda were pretty good cars back in the day, both my sisters owned Mazda Protégés back in the mid to late 90s and they were really happy with their cars . We all know the catch phrase Zoom Zoom .😊
I had a 1993 626 from 1999-2002 when I was in my late teens/early 20s. It was one of the coolest cars I have owned yet. Mines was black with a tan interior. The oscillating air vents were dope. I got so many chicks with this car. My best friend had a 1992 Lexus ES 300 during the time I had my 626. We would compare how the interiors were somewhat similar.
I have one with 60k miles, stick shift, 1.8cc, hatchback, it's in Belgium and planning to bring it to the states. I love that car, when I got it it only had 17k miles and we put so many miles and now it rests in my parents garage waiting to make the trip here.
I agree; I also thought at the time that this one of the best looking sedans in the 1990's. All the Japanese brands made huge leaps forward with styling and refinement in the late 80's and early 90's, and this one was one of the best. Seems since then, Mazda alternates between extremely vanilla and impressive between the last generation 626 that followed and the subsequent three generations of Mazda6.
I had already owned a B2000 and 323 when I decided to get the 626 and a BIG driver in the choice was it's styling. I liked the 626, but can't say there was anything memorable about it. Later I got a Miata and that was truly memorable.
I love 626, 323. I thought they were beautiful. My favorite Japanese brand.🤗
I found the U.S. 626 more attractive than the same car in other markets. I also prefer the 1993-1995 models over the 1996-1997 update. With the base 2.0 4 cylinder, the car was just not interesting to drive, especially if an automatic was paired to it. With that sweet V6, though, this was much more appealing than the other cars its size (i.e. Contour, Galant, Altima, Accord). It wasn't as spacious as the Camry, which grew a lot in 1992 (even larger than the 1994 Accord). Even then, the Mazda "Zoom-Zoom" identity was present. It handled so well compared to other FWD sedans.
Mazda worked with Ford and help design several Fords The 1991 Escort, The Ford Courier truck, Ford Probe and Ford Festiva & Aspire to name a few
Mini 929 🖤
Unfortunately we didn't get the better version of that V6 over here in north America. There was a 200hp version in japan that would have made a huge difference in Mazda's reception here, especially the MX-6.
The one standout factor of these V6 models from 90s mazda was how amazing they could sound with a bit of exhaust work, I didn't care how fast I drove my MX-6, just how nice it felt and sounded
I wasn't aware of that. A 200hp version of the 2.5 liter V6? That would have made a huge difference. Especially if it was available with a manual transmission. I would have gotten the automatic, of course.
Of all the brands I've driven and owned...Mazda has always been my favorite. The 2004 3 hatchback, I think was the most fun/ reliable yet comfortable car I've ever known. I own a CX5, quiet comfortable yet still a little sporty and I think their tech is more reliable than so many others. They still use a transmission not a rubber band :) CVT and their detonation of fuel is a leap forward in technology. I mostly blame the GT for the way the car market has gone with the mandates, I think I should still be able to get a stripped down car if I want one, but then again we haven't been free to make our own choices in this cntry for 160 years.
The 626 really did have a clean, form follows function, mini Mercedes style.
Ford should still be selling rebadged Mazdas to keep a toe in the car market and compete with Honda, Toyota, Kia, etc.
A cheap way to stay in the regular car market .. for when it resurges which is inevitable.
No 😂... Let mazda be and or do mazda ....
I agree on one thing. The sedan market is not dead and will eventually come back strong. Ford is going to be caught off guard along with General Motors and Stellantis. Not everyone is going to want an electric vehicle, crossover, or an SUV.
Ford wasn't really selling rebadged Mazdas. The Probe had its own styling, and the 626/MX-6 probably wouldn't have done as well as it did without Ford's financial involvement. If these were manufactured overseas and imported, they probably would have cost too much compared to Nissans, Toyotas, and Hondas that were built in the States. Ford's Escort also wasn't a rebadged Mazda, though it did have a lot of Mazda DNA. Ford's true rebadged Mazdas were the Courier (before the Ranger) and the Mercury Tracer.
At least this 626 had a decent trunk. The 929 at that time had the same problem as the Infiniti J30: too small of a trunk.
Oh god the memories. I had one these with the 4cyl. UNDERPOWERED. It was like driving a slug. Plus it had the horrible ford transaxle that needed replacing twice in the 3 years I owned it. Ugh.

Honestly I really love the style of this car!!! But I was one of those people that just bought a Honda Accord, because it was a Honda Accord, my parents were Honda folks! My best friend had a Mazda Protege, my sister a Honda Civic and I had a VW Jetta!!!! Obviously the Civic was a much better car, but the Mazda Protege was better than the VW Jetta!!
