I will always remember this race. Trevor Bayne won as a rookie. My mom died on February 21 2011 so this really got to me. It was a HARD month and THIS made me happy. My brother in law and my brother use to race stock cars in the 70's in California so I had been to LOTS of races just not Nascar. My brother use to go to the ones he could. My brother had been through a terrible fire when he was 19. He started finally being able to recover after MANY surgeries and he became interested in racing due to my brother in law and he loved it. He turned 21 while he was racing. He had a car #21 - 1963 Ford Galaxy painted orange. He loved that car. Anyway, for LOTS of reasons this got to me. Was a very exciting finish.
@@Sean86676 thank you. I do tend to write too much in comments 😆. When I remembering the past I tend to write even more. She was pretty much unconscious but she whispered "really?" and I said "yes mama can you believe it?" I then asked her if she thought the baby would be a boy or girl (she had been known to predict that) after a few times of me asking she said "a girl." Those were her last words to me before she died. Bitter sweet but I am SO glad I got the the chance to tell her. My beautiful FEMALE grandbaby was born a few months later and she is So special to me to this day and always will be no matter what. I've been a Labonte fan since '04 (i'm only 15 now). I thought that, coming to the white flag, Labonte was finally going to win on the Sprint Cup Series for the first time since 2005. Then, going in to turn 3, he got loose or something, and allowed Edwards and Gilliland to pass. That just killed me, seeing as he actually had a chance to win the biggest race of the year. I still believe that he'll end his drought soon enough.
I always remember Labonte driving the green 18 car. He didn't look right in another car. Same with Earnhardt Jr. He didn't look right in anything other than the red Budweiser car.
I was at the Houston Airport when this race finished. I wasn't close to the TV, and all I saw was a red and white Ford doing donuts, and I got really excited because I thought it was Terry Labonte who had won. I had forgotten that the Wood's had went back to their old scheme, as I was still used to the solid red that Bill Elliott ran
@cstrnutt2004 Dude, give Trevor Bayne some credit he was just a rookie, if you were a nascar rookie driver and you won the Daytona 500 I bet you will be happy and excited and shocked like he was.
i don't think he got loose Trevor went down low to block Carl Edward's attempt leaving Labonte out to dry. Bobby Labonte still has a shot of winning like anyone and he probably has a better shot than Terry lol
I always why Labonte went up high as Edwards was coming through. Did he think if he stayed down low that Edwards was carrying enough steam that he would've hit Labonte so hard that it wrecked him?
Edwards was glued right on that yellow line. While pushing Bayne, Labonte had to pull out just slightly so his car could get air to the radiator. Labonte pulled up just high enough where Edwards was able to squeeze in there, and then Bayne was able to go down to that yellow line and block Edwards. It was actually great driving by Bayne because he was able to use Labonte as a pick because if Labonte didn't hold on next to Edwards as long as he did, Edwards would have had enough momentum to pass Bayne on the outside to win the race.
This video reminded me of that horrible "Car of Tomorrow" pair-racing thing we were doing. I hated that so much, it ruined restrictor plate racing for a few years.

My favorite Daytona finish!!
Had a small bet on Trevor to win at an odd of 81, which is still the highest odd I ever hit!
Go Trevor!
I remember Richard Petty standing off to the side of the winners circle watching Trevor and the team celebrate. He was so happy for the Wood Brothers.
Mad respect from legend to legends

Tony Stewart and Mark Martin: “You can’t just win the Daytona 500 on your first try!!”

Just saw that car at the Henry Ford Museum today. Still covered with Coca-Cola and confetti.
i just saw it yesterday! at the henry ford museum to!

Us Bayne’s know how to compete😂 I remember all of us jumping around after seeing my cuz win that race! Totally iconic
This was an amazing moment in racing. This was NASCAR’s glory days. I want those NASCAR days back.
I was sooo emotionally happy for Trevor.
Nascar is still cool. Been a fan since the 2010 Daytona 500
@kjproductions9050 - I’ve been a fan since1998; things have changed so much.
@@ralphlazio505 But it's still cool
Winning the daytona 500 is one thing, but winning the Daytona 500 the day after your 20th birthday on your first ever D500 start is another
Wood Brothers = the most likable team in NASCAR
It's the stuff that dreams are made of...
Funniest line throughout all this, "Where did that #34 come from?" 🤣🤣😂😂

I was 10 or 11 when this happened I’m 21 now and I remember this so well
I was in the middle of high school and still show respect every time I look back
I bet Dale Earnhardt would be happy for him, but would be shaking his head that it took him only 1 try to win the Daytona 500.
Haha
Dale would have crashed him
Funny enough Bobby Labonte finished 2nd to both of them in their respective 500 wins
@@clarenceghammjr1326Honestly Bobby shoulda wrecked or bumped him outta the way too. A 500 win for JTG woulda helped his recent legacy a ton
@@LessGo7921 Bobby finished 4th, it was Carl Edwards in second and David Gilliland in third
2:17 so good. One of the best races I have seen.
This was one of feel good 500s
Carl Edwards finshed 2nd to the 2 biggest upsets in 2011, here and Regan Smith at Darlington.
ironically he finished 2nd in the standings to a guy that literally had to be perfect in the chase
I never thought much of Carl or his career
I was watching this and I had huge butterflies in my stomach!!!!!

Been watching NASCAR since 1962. This is one of the most satisfying Daytona 500.
man there was a huge party in knoxville , tn that day celebrating one of our own winning the 500
Not since 1990 with Derrike Cope has an upset been this huge!
Good job, , Trevor
WE NEED FOX TO DO THE COMMENTARY FOR THE WHOLE SEASON
Is anybody here after Harrison Burton scored his first Cup win and Wood Brothers' 100th win at Daytona?
yes, me - 2011 was the year I started watching NASCAR and tandem racing was so cool on the superspeedways
Trevor’s move on Carl won him the Daytona 500. He didn’t luck his way into that. Fantastic job.
Do yah thang 21 do ya thang
HAP-PIE BIRTHDAYE TREVOR BAYNE!

EPIC!
I thought stewart wouldve won it when i watched it
Starting inside, winner of the first race of 2011, outside winner of the last race of 2011
Nah, the biggest upset is still the 1990 Daytona 500 with Cope going to victory lane instead of Earnhardt!
That wasn’t necessarily an upset. More like a fluke
As a Earnhardt fan, Derrick kicked his ass
@@cobramystic_gaming1505 considering Cope only ever got one other win you are correct. Cope was never a competitive driver

bring back the tandem draft. please.
How did Joy, DW, and McReynolds not notice Edwards and Gilliland running the lead 4 down that whole time?
Because they suck as commentators. Too much talking and not enough paying attention.
