Congratulations. You are the first non-caribbean I've seen on RUclips who can actually play reggae properly. The other guys have no idea, and I'm disappointed that they are getting so many hits. From now on when I'm criticising the fraudsters, I shall recommend their followers to any of the Dreads such as Tuff Lion, or you. Keep spreading the word!!
When I first moved to Hawaii my friend taught me to skank. He explained it to me in a technical fashion and it all totally made sense. (Especially since I've always loved reggae music) I had the swing down no problem. My right hand was perfect. ..but I still didn't have the feel in my left hand down. He said "Just pretend you're REALLY high and you're too lazy to even push down the strings and fret the chord." After he said that, it totally clicked and I had it down. Lol Looking back, it's probably because I already play very lightly - so I'm used to doing the opposite (increasing pressure on my left hand, not decreasing it) But I also think that my natural inclination to play lightly is why reggae clicked so fast for me. It feels very, very natural for me. ..and because I grew up around blues music in Memphis, the whole concept of "swinging" and playing with timing was also very second nature.
I didn't know I was looking for rhythm reggae guitar lessons until I saw your video. I've watched a few today and yours is the best. Very clear explanaition of techniquee and shows the versatility. I rate yours up with Tuff Lion. Maybe better. Nice work.
To Jesus: This is a good video: I appreciate the technical aspect regarding the strings utilized and the pressure and release points, where, ironically, the rhythm comes from the fretting hand, not totally from the right. Excellent.
hey man! amazing lesson! I've recently got into playing reggae myself! you clarified all the questions I had in playing reggae! thanks for this video! best video on youtube!
Thanks Sir.now I got it with your explanations.but I had to watch the video several times.thanks a lot .Good teacher. SIR.videos of others were not that helpful.
Wow, been playing guitar for years...can play a little bit of most stuff, but hey Reggae rhythm guitar is so hard to grasp. Gotta try not to give up, cos it sounds so good if you can do it. Great video thanks for the lesson.
Very good instructions.. I am a reggae drummer and if rhythm and bass is not on point it is never the same to enjoy drumming whilst they also rely on the drums likewise.. well done mate..
Great to share this knowledge man, Jah bless! i used to see some guys really with a good tecnique on guitar but they didn't have that skanking tecnique
Thanks, one of the better videos explaining with more detail the left hand movement. One question I have not being able to answer on all reggae guitar videos. Does the down strum occur on the down beats (1,2,3,4) or on the off beats (ands). Thanks!
thanks man... i was trying to figure out my self how they do this chop... i play guitar since i was a little kid and i though it was easy... but when i tried to play it on the electric it wasn't sound ok...
Since you can play bass and guitar, could you do a video playing the lead guitar of bob songs like Back out, Do it twice, etc . in that songs the guitar sounds like the bass
Yes, same thing for the acoustic, although you might find it a little harder because, normally, acoustic guitars have the action higher than electric guitars, so you'll have to press harder with your hand/fingers (the "action" is the distance between the strings and the fretboard)
Hi man ! Thanks very much for your videos. I agree with Ram, there's so many bad videos about reggae and yours are very good. I just would like to know if your amplifier is a fender twin reverb 65 ? Thanks very much.
Hey JJesus......any chance you can teach the song 'natural mystic' by Bob Marley?.....awesome song and I would really appreciate some guidance on the bassline and rhythm?
Hey, sorry for the late reply - for some reason I stopped getting notifications of comments on my email and just realised I have lots of comments to respond! I am trying to understand what you mean, but I cannot replicate your description.... Are you lifting the fingers completely off of the strings? You shouldn't -- you sould just release the pressure (no freeting) but keep the fingers on the strings to mute them. Is there a way you can make a video and show me?
J Jesus hi, I apologise too for the late reply! I do release the pressure and keep my fingers on the strings but get a sort of ‘wah’ sound. Is it that I’m not lifting my fingers fast enough perhaps?
Hi Jesus ! Very nice work ! Like other said, one of the best skank here! Can you explain more about your settings ? Amp model ? Is a Twin? I think your guitar is a Gibson LesPaul Junior like marley with P90? But can you explain more about the setting you used in this video ? Mic Guitare and Amp Settings? THX et Big Up to you!

J Jesus My pleasure.
bassiehd Yes I agree. Steve Golding is very good too. Together we can help rid the world of fake reggae!

LOL I was trying exactly the way you showed that is incorrect.. Can't wait to try your way. Would this work as well on Acoustic?

great lesson. great sounding guitar. whats the setup pls?
Thanks Gregory - In this video I am using: Gibson Les Paul special, 1974 / Fender Twin 1994 / Boss RC30 Loop Station
Hi Jesus. When I lift my fingers off the fretboard, I get a string bending sound instead of a full tone. What can I do?
Hey, sorry for the late reply - for some reason I stopped getting notifications of comments on my email and just realised I have lots of comments to respond!

J Jesus hi, I apologise too for the late reply! I do release the pressure and keep my fingers on the strings but get a sort of ‘wah’ sound. Is it that I’m not lifting my fingers fast enough perhaps?
Got it right
Great vids and music bro! Do you have a vid on effects and amp setup for reggae??
Hey Vegan Sauce! No I don't... but I will do a video about it soon! It is on my to do list now! Thanks for the suggestion!
Can you do a solo reggae lesson? Bless little bob
