there's a difference between good players and those who are good players and teachers. ..,this is one of the most clear lessons on reggae bass on RUclips so far!
This guy's bass tutorials are the best I've seen on youtube; if you can't pick up how to play bass (reggae or not) by these lessons, you're just impatient!
@q1k9i3l0ä5å No many of the things he's saying sound simple but get very deep very fast. To actually let some of the stuff sink in (versed in a bit of music theory or not) I've def looked through a couple times to refresh memory.
Thanks so much for this, man! I've played guitar for 12 years and always loved reggae and now I'm learning to play the bass more seriously. This was such a helpful little series you did - you explained things well and you created easy examples to follow.
Thank you for this! I usually just play by ear. Just started getting into learning scales and such. Its one of the first times I have REALLY understood things like triad major and minor shapes and how to create bass lines that aren't just following a guitar playing quarter notes. Also learned a little about playing guitar reggae style too. Great video!
I feel so alive man. All my creative juices are flowing. This is opening doors for me to "new worlds". I feel most alive when I'm in learning mode... that's a recent discovery. Lol.
I really love your approach to teaching Jamaican bass lines: giving new players the tools and rhythmic approach to create their own--teaching them how to fish for themselves, so to speak. I have been playing Jamaican bass since the early 1980s. I took a 10-year break from bass to play "ethnic" drums and flute, and I have recently returned to brush the rust off. Despite my long background in Jamaican pop and spiritual music, I found your video enlightening.
I just discovered reggae and I never thought I'd be into it but it just makes me so happy as does your music. I will be listening to a lot of your work and am inspired by your playing! So glad I found such a great musician!
Hey Dale! Thanks so much for the comment - such an amazing compliment, I am really flattered! As you can tell, I love reggae - there is much to explore, and I hope you enjoy discovering other great artists/bands and the intricacies of playing it! Enjoy!
Playing reggae with any instruments especially the bass guitar is really simple. You have to feel the beat in your soul and you will get the rythmn of the chords.
I tried jamming on reggae jam tracks before and did not know what to do. Now i jammed again after this video on different tracks and it was so good that my wife was really impressed. Thank you so much.
Love this! I'm trying to learn all styles of playing. My absolute faves are funk and r&b but reggae is so nonchalant and just go with the flow. Love it! Thank you for this tutorial señor!
Cheers J Jesus. I have watched some many bass guitar lessons on youtube. I must say that your the best teacher and your teaching is second to none. My bass has really improved thanks to you.
I went through dozens of "how to play reggae" vids and this is the first one that actually demonstrates and lays out what is going on. All the others kept repeating "you've just gotta feel it mon!" and as this guy proves, there's reasons behind those feelings and there's technique required to achieve reggae sound. Many thanks
J Jesus, its the simple way you explain the fingering that got you all the views. Its like your talking to us and not at us that helps us latch on to the practice. Great job! I Subscribed. Thanks.
I don't have a guitar. I do it on my piano and play in church on a bass guitar. I don't how often I watched that video. Great lesson, great teaching, and easy to apply techniques. Thank you very much my friend!!!
You have explained this so well. I especially like the parts where you talk about going back to the root note through the use of a descending scale pattern.
Yeah yeah yeah! After three months of autodidact discovery, I actually DO understand what you are saying. Now there's tons of practice and further discovery to come. YAAAAAY! Last night a bassline saved my life! .-D
wow it's really incredible, your recording is pure and thanks so much because I have learnt how to create a reggae basic bass, I'm waiting for another recording. God bless.
Bro, thanks a lot. You're a great teacher. I've learned a lot from you more than my music teacher. Stay safe and healthy. PS: I said thank God after learning a lot and then I saw your name. I was like, Oh... really thank God. 👍🍻
A Totally Well-Made Video , So Professional , Following All The Pedagogical Rules In Teaching :-) Thanks For Making It So Easy For Our Mind To Grasp . Now I Get A Much Better Understanding Of How Reggea Works . Lots Of Respect From North Africa .
Thank you very much. I've been playing bass and guitar for years. When it comes to rock and pop I can manage alright. But reggae is a different matter! I love playing it but it doesn't come naturally ( I play melodic, mainly ). So your tutorial was very helpfull. God bless!
When you add the 4th chord, you have the same chords as Boys Don't Cry by The Cure. Amazing lesson! You teach not only how to play, but also how to think and create basslines. And all that in a very understandable way! Thank you!
Glad you love it!! The album is available on Spotify and my Soundcloud: open.spotify.com/artist/2kizN0IdwTPwzT4onOnXEc www.jjesusmusic.com/jjesusmusic If you wish to support my music by buying the album, here is the link of my Bandcamp: jjesusmusic.bandcamp.com/ Big Up!
If i was limited to one word: Awesome. Plain awesome. Without doubt you are the best around here. It cannot be simpler. There are teachers and there are TEACHERS and you are a TEACHER. Do you have tutorial books and videos on sale?
Hey Brother, thank you very much 🙏 I will soon be releasing a course on Reggae Bass - taking it from the very beginning, teaching some theory and the foundation techniques, and the teaching more than 50 Reggae classics, with Tabs to be easier to follow. I'll drop a comment again when it's available so you can check it out!
Good job, I played and toured in a hardcore band called TREE out of Boston in the 90s. I recently got into the Cali Roots reggae scene. Loving the groove of it all. Just got a drum set too so I’m learning reggae drums too. Ha! Check out the song. “River guide you” by The Movement. I loved it first time I heard it about 8 seconds in I knew It was something special. Have a great day. I subscribed. 👍👊
best tutorial iv ever seen man. your personal music is very great as well. where did you gain all of your knowledge of reggae bass? i want to learn more.
Thanks Jayson. In my teens I developed a passion (should I say obsession) for Bob Marley and his music. It was all I wanted to do when I grabbed the guitar. Singing came later. Then I had the opportunity to study music in London - and that is what I did. There I learned a lot and developed technique and knowledge -- on the guitar and bass. I worked on my first album called The MessAge (released in 2011) for about 3 years! That is a lot of time ahaha. Since June this year I have been working on my second album, and it is almost ready. The official release will be sometime in the beginning of next year. Simply put, I love making music -- especially reggae -- and the time that I have spent doing it has brought me to the level that I am today. When I finish the album I will be dedicating more time to make more videos: tutorials and covers. Make sure you subscribe to the channel to be notified of new videos! Thanks!
