My nephrologist was so happy that I'm vegan. He even wrote in his notes to my internist that the vegen diet is the very best diet for the kidneys. He recommends a low fat, low protein, low sodium, whole food vegan diet. My kidneys healed so well that he said I didn't need to see him anymore.

I find Kidney disease very confusing - on the one hand we are being told that a vegan and/or vegetarian diet will help with CKD so we modify our diets to include greens and all types of vegetables including broccoli, cauliflowers, asparagus, etc. Fruits are included such as apples, peaches, melons, etc. Animal protein is substituted with plant-based protein including beans, but then... you read that many of those items you thought were healthy and helping to keep your CKD in check, may not be so healthy for your kidneys after all. So, unless you are a nutritionist who knows the proper levels of potassium, phosphorous, etc. in all the different foods, you find yourself in a very confused state. So what should a person with CKD eat safely? I know that is too broad a question, but I hope you see the mixed signals we are getting when it comes to choosing the proper diet for CKD.

Well if you already have kidney disease, some vegetables and most fruits raise your blood sugar level. Everybody is not the same. Research all your veggies, spinach, pomegranates, bananas ets are high is potassium. If you already been diagnosed the stay away from them
Look, I tried McDougal's potatoes diet and it skyrocketed my sugar level. Maybe I already have diabetes. I have to be careful with most foods because they spike my blood sugar. Got to do by trial and error. It's tedious.

When I was in nursing school many years ago, I was taught that a low protein diet was imperative for dialysis patients. Now dialysis patients are told to eat a high protein diet plus high protein ensure drinks. When I try to educate my patients, they say their doctors tell them to keep the protein in their diet very high. This is a challenge I see in the hospital.

@@ihartsacto: you are absolutely right. I am a diabetic with CKD and in my late 60s. I was told by my nephrologist to eat only plant-based protein. That's difficult for a diabetic and in trying to balance between the two issues I became malnourished. I had no energy and could not stand long enough to make a cup of coffee. I had to reevaluate my diet and introduce some animal protein and iron supplements and others. I told my doctor that I would rather die early from the disease than waste away in bed waiting to die. She has never made any recommendations on supplements only her constant regarding plant base and then she made it worse by removing most legumes due to phosphate. Quite frankly it was depressing.

I finally get it, more protein is not the goal, actually quite the opposite. I was trained to value a high protein nutrition label in a processed food, such as cereal. Now i want whole foods without labels & protein is not the priority. I heard Dr.McDougall say that protein deficiency is impossible if you consume enough calories on a whole food plant carb diet but the brain washing ran deep. Now i want a low protein diet and have few dietetic worries and what a relief. I am feeling better already & now the idea of eating animal products is a toxic thought 💀 Thankyou for sharing your knowledge about the truth of why so many are sick, im happy to trust in the McDougall diet for my best possible health.

I have seen Dr. McDougal on panels with other physicians and he doesn’t not hesitate to point out misinformation. This makes the level of his credibility apparent. I have the utmost respect that he has such a high ethical standard that he will not sit silent in the presence of others who provide information to the public that does not coincide with the research.

It's sad, but I don't think my friend will take any better care of the new kidney, by changing and/or improving her diet. She was being considered she told me, for a while and was mid-70’s which is older than they usually consider. I thought about being tested to donate a kidney but my concern was that she had not addressed her underlying condition which was diabetes. It’s a big operation and a risk at that age. The reason I decided against being tested was what would happen if my child or another younger family member needed a kidney and also that my sister didn’t try to reverse her diabetes.

When I work out how to join your 12 day program, I will. My daughter helps me with all computer things. :) My friend may be joining it also even though she doesn't have kidney issues. It then slipped away from me and finally , after years am now down to 13GFR with my last test. I am currently waiting to see the Nephrologist next month to get my current results. I am only 20 minutes into this, but have two observations. The first is about how Chef AJ lost a friend when she suggested that the friend go vegan. I have heard Chef AJ mention this kind of thing before. I have also lost friends - more so due to the animal rights aspect but have also been rebuffed when speaking about health concerns to more than one person who has since passed away due to the health problem they faced.
The other observation is that Dr. McDougall talks about not eating animal foods but then goes on to say cows and pigs multiple times. So many people seem to think that foods like chicken and fish are not animal foods. I wish he would clarify that all animal protein does similar things to the body. I cannot count how many times people have told me in a bragging way that they don’t eat meat or much meat or live on chicken or fish thinking this is healthy. Am only 20 minutes into this so will see how much he clarifies this. For newbies, I think this point should be clarified.

If its just one finger, then it could be old physical damage. It sounds like a blood flow problem from an old injury unless you have ongoing physical actions on that finger. Keeping it warm and regular massaging might help to encourage blood flow to the finger. Also, make sure you are ok on B12 as a rule out possibility. You cant do much beyond that. If you have other affected fingers or skin effects in other parts of the body, that can be quite different.

He doesn’t wear makeup or dye his hair and neither does his wife. They don’t pose for the camera, wear stylish clothes, or even have their hair done! Please! Health is everything. I call diabetes the “pretty people’s disease” because so many who have it are attractive.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge! In the last month, I have had to get involved with my father’s two doctors because one is not talking to the other, in addition to one PA trying to override a heart medication that the heart specialist gave him! In addition to neither of the doctors have taken any time to update my father after the heart specialist cancelled my father’s two remaining refills without his knowledge. I found this out after making one phone call. I appreciate doctors like you sharing the knowledge. Somewhere in the medical area in these days the medical communication and trying to really help the patient is questionable. There are five examples communicated to me in the last week! Please continue to educate the new doctors, and please continue to share your knowledge!

Always good interview with Dr. McDougall. I had to laugh at your thumbnail. When I first glanced at it on my laptop (small screen), the wall hangings behind his head looked like globs of gore shooting from his head. I got a chuckle when I opened the video and saw what it was.

I’m starting to learn more about diet and looking for a reliable nephrologist. Next week I get a biopsy and im just scared if eating right will have an improvement

Controlling diet can indeed delay the progression of illness, but many people cannot persist. As far as i know, troditional chinese medicine can cure CKD, but not much people know about this. I knew a doc who is good at this. Wish you good luck

I drink astralagus tea and chanka Piedra tea for prevention. My sister was diabetes 2 for more than two decades. She’s a nurse on graveyard shift. We all know, we should be sleeping at night . Circadian Rhythm. Long time user of diabetes medicine. Metformin, glypiside , insulin(two years injecting) . She started having protein in her pee. Scared the shit out of her. I happened to have a thick ass book, called Japanese Healing, translated in English. All the diseases and Healing naturally were written there. That’s where I came across the Astralagus plant. I told my sister about it. Thank God , she got better and her A1C now is around 7. It used to be 14 A1C.

Thank you Chef AJ, for defending being human. I have family whom I love who are not stupid, who have tried & tried and are addicted. Some don’t want to but doesn’t make them stupid. Just loved you for that. Dr M can be hard & harsh on doc and patients/people. His info is on point & relevant. Very little to disagree with although I do have less than 1% disagreeing with him but People do go thru withdrawals like alcohol etc. May not be as severe but I did when I got rid of sugar. The pain & brain fog was real 😢 Thank you for sticking up for us, our friends and family. You should have him talk with your friends who did presentations on food addiction. Forgot her name. That was a few months ago. I’ll look it up and post on chat later ❤🙏🏽 @chefAJ
