One of the best videos on Hypertension that everyone on blood pressure medications should listen to. The most thorough explanation and education on pressures, drugs, etc. Thank you, Dr. McDougall.
I just wanted to add that high blood pressure can be caused by apnea, caused by chronic allergic rhinitis, and chronic stuffy nose leading to mouth breathing. I know this, as I am living with this at present. I am eating WFBP and I have just started butenkyo breathing method along with adding foods that help lower blood pressure. My bp is coming down with breathing exercises, along with healthy diet and exercise.
I know your post is a bit old but I hope you see this reply. Would you mind sharing more information on how apnea, rhinitis and/or mouth breathing effect HBP? I've thought this has caused my husband's for a really long time. I didn't know how or that it was an actual thing, but the levels of his pressure are just so connected to these things that I just couldn't help but think they were linked.
This video was one of the best ones Iv watched . I’m on high blood pressure medicine and this just did it for me to start eating healthy again . Thank you Chef AJ and Dr.McDougall for all you do . Absolutely appreciate it!!!
I developed hypertension from being highly stressed for 1 year in my prior job. I ate way too many sweets as a coping mechanism. I started developing digestive issues and breathing issues. The breathing issue landed me in the hospital but doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and dismissed it as anxiety and prescribed me anti anxiety medication of which I never took. I felt like meds would not fix the core issue and I wasn't going to get any help from doctors so all I could do is try to help myself. So I did lots of research and kept leaning towards diet. First, I quit my stressful job. Then I used prune juice to clean my gut out. Then ate an anti-inflammatory diet and drank natural protein drinks with 21 minerals and vitamins. This is what worked for me. After a few months, all of my symptoms went away.
Yay!! Congratulations and happy for you!!! You being proactive toward your own health and healing is admirable! I am trying to do the same to regain my digestive health so far I am getting good results but not cured as yet although I am doing good now! Still trying to rid of some inflammation in the gut and in the nostrils cavities areas. The old days that we can rely on doctors were long gone! We are our own caregivers and we must take our lives in our own hands with care!! ❤
My late mother was very careful with food, she claimed it was due to digestive problems caused during WW2 and surviving as a Jew on catholic false papers. Dementia was a blessing for her she lost her PTSD and her ability to stress or worry and she also lost her blood pressure too. And she still recognised me (her darling only child)
I've had doctors freaking me out about my blood pressure for years. This has been so helpful to me. My blood pressure was 150/90 at age 23 at home. A week later my doctor put me on two meds to bring it down to 110/70. Another doctor wanted to even increase my losartan because of my white coat in the office. She said it was Good for my kidneys and that I would be on medicine the rest of my life. 3 years later I saw Forks over knives, became vegan and found a doctor to take me off my meds because my pulse was very low. I've been off of the meds since then but now and then it gets into the 130s/80s, 140s/90s. I now see I just need to keep up with my healthy eating and not to worry when they're freaking out about my white coat at every doctors visit. Thank you Dr. Mcdougall

I hope you can excercize, eat low salt, low fat home cooked foods, meditate etc because your doctors advocate medicine to lower BP to protect your eyes, kidneys and heart. They are being responsible and giving you their best care. Keeping fat below 50 grams a day will help. All the best to you ❤ I am sure your plant based diet will also help in the long run. Dr. McDougall did point out the damaged, stiff vessels are what lead to high BP. Daily flax meal may help rebuild the vessels to be more stretchy but it doesn't help everyone.

I'm a former 20+ a day coffee and tea drinker. That habit alone went a long way towards ruining my health. I have had to find alternatives. For tea and coffee drinkers looking for non-caffeinated drinks (vs decaffeinated), I've found the following helpful: rooibos tea to replace tea and Teeccino (order online if there are no local stockists) for coffee. I come from a country where we like very strong tea. I use two bags of rooibos - which has a natural sweetness - to make it strong and then add unsweetened soya milk to offset the sweetness. It's the closest thing I've come to a cup of tea without the tea plant. You can also use one bag of red rooibos and one bag of green rooibos to make the brew more astringent, like real tea. Some of the Teeccino flavours approximate to real coffee. I think Java is the closest I have tried, although Teeccino now has many more flavours I have not sampled. Another option might be Carleigh Bodrug's scrappy cooking date coffee, which uses roasted and ground date stones to make a coffee substitute.

I was overweight and had high blood pressure due to high cholesterol. Lost weight, exercises and ate better and took a cholesterol medication. Once the weight and cholesterol were down, my blood pressure returned to normal. That was over 20 years ago and it is still normal. Best of luck to you as you continue your journey.
This has helped me save my dad's life! I have been going back and forth with his physician about too much blood pressure meds. Bp 110 over 50 with pulse of 49. He's 90!! I insisted that he do something because of my dad's lowered quality of life( dizzy, no energy, sleeping ALLthe time and kidney function reduced to 34%). My dad has developed early stage dementia. I have been making dietary changes for 1 year and seen some improvement in over all health. My dad is still mobile. I am getting on this next week! Thank you--- You are saving lives!
For years I thought I had White coat Hypertension. Its been high for years and now I am taking a proactive approach, hopping to eliminating medication.
I get almost as nervous at home as at the doctor. Getting a high reading at a dental clinic during the pandemic has terrified me. I have always had great Bp even when obese. I need care but am terrified of doctors/dentists because the good they do is so often ruined by the fear, absolute terror they leave you suffering with after their exams.
Go to the Doctor they WILL find something if you have insurance and a ICD10 code for payment can be justified CHA Ching, they have lots of bills to pay. I know of several people in the last 16 years that went to MDs & some got past gatekeepers to Endocrinologists for 18months flopping around over several Diagnosis and medications to FINALLY after nagging for it got a D3 level check and it was near ZERO or below 20nl/mg then after 18months of taking 50K mcg a week their symptoms faded some went back to work, one woman a LPN with yeast/fungus and sun allergies all over her body took three diflucan at ONCE because she thought it would cure her candida scales and dry skin. I had told her what worked for me, one every two weeks. She apparently thought more is better and threw herself into Kidney failure and a deeper depression quick death, sad because the medical profession badly failed her. Over medicated for over 20 years and very bad diet , social isolation no exercise and a carb addict. She did need a health coach but called me to vent on a regular basis. Just one of 5 or 6 stories I ran into without looking.
What kind of monsters do you have for doctors? Absolute terror and fear? Time to find a new doctor. Please keep on top of your blood pressure. Sometimes I get high readings so now they take my blood pressure when the appointment is over with when I have settled in and calmed down. Good luck.
Same… I take mine daily for a couple weeks at home - my fear gets less the more I do it- then it lowers, but goes up around people who trigger my anxiety including doctors .
He is so right about excitement and higher readings. The last time at the doctor's office I was extremely upset. My readings were extremely high, high for me - 140+ over ? I couldn't believe it. I had coffee two hours ago, and have been running around all morning with the cats. I just used the BP cuff (thanks for reinding me that I even have one!): 103/63, pulse 52. I'm almost 59, mostly plant based. In my younger years my BP was fairly low, I'd often get dizzy standing up and almost fall down.
140 is the top number. the bottom is what you dont want to go over 90. top number can safely go up due to stress, pain, etc. the bottom number rising above 90 is usually indicative of medical issues.
I'm on amlodipine 5mg, about 50 pounds overweight according to Kempner, 55 yo - BP is 120/80 consistently since being prescribed. Based on what I've learned today, I am really in trouble and I don't want to take another one. My PA is canceled
Thank you Chef AJ and Dr John and Mary McDougall for a wonderful video. It was very helpful to learn about hypertension in such detail, plus all your answers to questions posed. Thank you so much, too, for the link to the McDougall Foundation. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed about the fate of the planet.
You are what you eat. Yes one needs to shop around to find good prices for fruits and vegetables. Luckily Dr. Fuhrman recommends considering frozen fruits and veg as being not only frozen fresh but likely have less added chemicals. It's incredibly interesting about vegetable oils - which are very likely the ones used in processed food and baked goods.
I worked in home aged care for 17years here in Australia Mary, and I also ran falls prevention exercise classes and I will always remember one of my lovely ladies who told me that she always wanted to be a Doctor, but her family thought that was not a career for a girl, so she became a teacher. Always thought that was so sad, but just a sign of the times I guess.
Dr. mcdougall is absolutely correct about any oil being a part of your daily diet. When I stop adding oil to my diet , I noticed a Hugh amount of being tired in my body. I love my weight even trying. When I take walks my heat feels so good. Oil in our diet is the killer. ❤️
Great lecture. I am very thankful for the advice against colonoscopy, towards which my GP pushes me, only because 'it has to be done'. Just as dr. McDougall said, small but significant 'little' details about how risky it is were strategically omitted. I live in Germany and I have been told that I MUST do it because I am over 50.
I use no-salt, which is potassium and tastes great. I'm not a fan of starches unless they are made resistant through refrigeration after cooking or after taking vinegar water or berberine before eating to prevent sugar spikes.
Thank you Dr John Mcdougail for a wonderful presentation l really appreciate you for the work you do to help poor people like me knowledge is power.veey informative.
This past year I've had problems with hypertension for the first time in my life. I am doing WFPB, but I love my salt so much! It's hard to give it up.

My bp was high for so long ( before i knew) that it damaged my heart ( left ventricular hypertrophy and grade 1 diastolic dysfunction) it's from a lifetime of being traumatized and also eating bad. I was put on lisinopril-hctz January 2022 but it didn't help much. I started eating keto/ carnivore 8 months ago, it didn't help so then a few months ago I added fasting and now my bp numbers ate beautiful , I went off the meds. I monitor my bp everyday too just to make sure. Now I know my heart condition will heal even though they say it doesn't 😒🙄. They don't know to much of course, I know ppl who's lvh reversed.. also my menstrual cycle came back and my sinus infections I've dealt with since 07 are gone. I'm low carb/ fasting for life..

Thank you AJ, my late mum was not wrong, much appreciation to Dr. MacDougall for the facts on food, and the way to eat. We are truly standing on the shoulders of giants.
To Dr Mcdougall. Why would I want to check blood pressure in the morning when it is highest? 1.02:20., when I'm most interested in how low it will drop down to while resting. Resting pressure tells me my overall circulatory health while marathon pressures tell me nothing.
The surfer vid D thing. If you use soap after being outside and wash your skin oils off the vid D doesn't get made by your skin. Shower off with plain water no soap.
I had been eating a mostly plant based diet with supplemented collagen and fish oil for about 2 years. My blood press probably averaged 133/84. I already ate a lot of legumes and other plant based Whole Foods. Most meals had been very low sodium. Yet recently within the I recently watched video about adding about 2000 plus mg of potassium to your diet. I have added potatoes, bananas, tomato paste, and pumpkin seeds to supplement my already low salt whole food plant based diet and my blood pressure has been creeping downward to where I’m getting consecutive days where my BP is below 120/80. I do have some fear that my sodium levels may be too low. Lord todays reading we 116/75, yesterday 120/80, day before that 112/73. I’m on no meds. When I was my BP went too low for me 94/43 and I was almost blacking out. We’ll so how this goes. Lord have mercy.
QUESTION: what mechanism is it that the body uses to reverse build up in the arteries? QUESTION: what does Dr McDougal think about digitalis and hawthorn for someone with congestive heart failure?
How do you stay hydrated if you take a diuretic I wonder. Once s cavity hurts...it's too late. These questions are great...I love the way Dr. McDougall is so honest. He is soo easy to love for the way he treats u
I never had any issue with BP until I started chemo for breast tumor. The surgery then caused horrid pain, followed by 35 rounds of radio therapy. The treatment for cancer caused the BP. How can I deal with that. I hate the way the BP med make me feel, so many bad side effects.
Breast cancer is often caused by dairy. If you are still eating dairy stop all dairy as well as all other animal based foods. Cut salt and oil and eat a low fat whole food plantbased diet. Exercise and drink hibiscus tea every day.
I'm on 12.5 Hydrochlorothiazide and I'm over 60. Blood pressure barely coming down and it's been 2 weeks of starting meditation. Went through crazy side effects...headache,stomach ache, not feeling right. I've read this medication will raise my sugar and cholesterol. How likely is this? That would cause me to need more meds. I want to stop this medication and continue to watch my diet and do exercise as I've been doing without meds. Blood pressure usually 160 over 80.
Sadly, I know 2 people who never had colonoscopies and died not long after finding stage 4 colon cancer. They did not eat healthy diets, but had they been screened all along they may still be alive.
I had been on amlodipine since 2008. I also have white coat syndrome-especially at the dentist. But in 2021, working out, got on a better diet and still on amlodipine. My BP was in the 80/50s. When it went down to 75/48, I got nervous and drank 2 cups of coffee! 😂 Since then I experimented and now have stopped the meds, but still have a tendency toward higher blood pressure and like some have said have had to deal with healthcare professionals “freaking out.” My BP is usually elevated at the dentist even if normal 5 minutes earlier taking my BO in the car. It was also the same level of elevation when I was on meds. My goal now is to get a normal BP, say 120ish/80ish at the dentist. I will follow Dr McDougall’s advice.
I do all of that just to look like someone who is eating. The number on the scale goes up and down a bit but nothing on my body shows for it. Sometimes am contemplating stop eating for a while kind of fasting.
Hi Dr. McDougall ,wonderful insights into blodd pressure. May I ask, I have chronic kidney disease and am on plantbase diet , but my bp is still rather high about 150-160, should i ask for chlortalidone, as I read it is contraindicated for weak kidneys in info on drug uses.

@@JenJen0582 Thank you for your kind suggestions. California is all I have to say. I have had several great doctors but not lately.
I love Dr. McDougal and Mary, such a wealth of information. I always learn something new!
Love this series with Dr. McDougall!
@lynn jackson thanks Lynn, good reminder ❤
Thankyou, Mr&Mrs McDougall... u guys r best in the world...looking both great by the way 😊❤
Thank you Dr. McDougall for opening my eyes! You have saved so many lives.
Thank you so much for Dr. John McDuogall's presentation. It was life changing!
Glad it was helpful!
Great interview. I can never get enough of listening to Dr. McDougall. The WWII movie about the POW runner was called Unbroken.
This presentation is absolutely amazing 🏆 So incredibly informative 🤓
I'm on amlodipine 5mg, about 50 pounds overweight according to Kempner, 55 yo - BP is 120/80 consistently since being prescribed. Based on what I've learned today, I am really in trouble and I don't want to take another one. My PA is canceled
3 and a half hours of joy, thanks Chef AJ and Dr John McDougall.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great! Thanks for these very important information! God bless!
I've been motivated to stick with the plant based lifestyle, but THIS REALLY ramped up my motivation!!!! THANK YOU!
The best explanation of the real causes of having high blood pressure.
Yeah, fasting is by far the best teacher IMO!👍🏻
What?
I have 3rd. Stage Chronic Kidney Disease. I would love to hear Dr. McDougall do a talk on CKD.
OMG ! 3 hours + of Dr McDougall ❤
I love all these old school plant based doctors. But noone is like doctor McDougall. ❤
I love dr mcdougall he’s my hero!!
This is a tremendous listen!
I use no-salt, which is potassium and tastes great. I'm not a fan of starches unless they are made resistant through refrigeration after cooking or after taking vinegar water or berberine before eating to prevent sugar spikes.
This information is extremely helpful & informative! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you AJ what a wonderful guest I love it when he is on you learn so much. Bea
Surprised you can't give it up! The more you let go the more your taste buds change
Yes indeed a a great attitude to accept what you can not change and so amazing that you escaped the fire and I love that you continue to follow your passion and read Scientific journals 🎶💜🎵🙏
Thank you so very much!!!
Thank You So Much 💖🥰💞
My bp was high for so long ( before i knew) that it damaged my heart ( left ventricular hypertrophy and grade 1 diastolic dysfunction) it's from a lifetime of being traumatized and also eating bad.
I didn't have to give up salt either.
Keto at 64 years old. Today's BP: 119/78. Just sayin'.
Thank you so much 💓 AJ for sharing this ❤️ wonderful 👌 video information on health from Dr. McDougall. You are truly an inspiration to me. Awesome 👌 👏 👍 teaching 👌
Whau what strong lecture - really eyeopening to see the movements of the blood before and after a meal - 🍀💚🐸
Wonderful thank you for the information ❤
thank yoy for sharing this videos
I absolutely loved this video! So interesting and relaxed- it is like hanging out with really smart, open hearted, good people.
Chef AJ fabulous blouse/shirt on you.
Thank you so much!!
@@CHEFAJ I agree, it's a lovely top/dress and the silver and that shade of green look great on you. You seem to look progressively younger in each new video I watch, Chef AJ. I'm seven years your junior to the day but I look at least seven years older. Are you doing anything in addition to following your usual eating plan (e.g. adding more raw food, or a non-food-related treatment or something)? Just curious... Thank you 😊
I took myself off the only tablet i was taking,im doing simple exercises and i try to eat healthy.I discuss this with my doctor and hes working along with me
Excellent lecture and interview.. thanks very much for sharing this vital information .
Chef AJay may l know if l can be Dr. McDougal patient l ask because lm here in Canada also can l buy that high blood medication Dr. McDougal prescribed to patiet here inn Canada or can l pay Dr McDougal s prescription my blood pressure is always high 160 /80 sometimes higher than that my med is Adalat and Perindo lndapa 8/2`5mg and XIGDUO 5/1000mg for diabetes and Atorvastatin every time l take these lm soo scared
Thank you AJ, my late mum was not wrong, much appreciation to Dr. MacDougall for the facts on food, and the way to eat.
We are truly standing on the shoulders of giants.
Dr McDougal is just a Angel from Heaven God bless you SHEF AJ For always having amazing people in your show .
Thank you!
I so agree with you doc for believing in diet and not drugs.
To Dr Mcdougall. Why would I want to check blood pressure in the morning when it is highest? 1.02:20., when I'm most interested in how low it will drop down to while resting. Resting pressure tells me my overall circulatory health while marathon pressures tell me nothing.
Thank you Dr and Chef 🌺
Excellent lecture. Very informative. Thank you for sharing.
The surfer vid D thing. If you use soap after being outside and wash your skin oils off the vid D doesn't get made by your skin. Shower off with plain water no soap.
Thank you doctor you are life saver
Your Braggs Nuitritional yeast has B12, written on the ingredients!
Shared this with multiple people who are told to take these drugs. Thank you so much!!!
I had been eating a mostly plant based diet with supplemented collagen and fish oil for about 2 years.
My blood press probably averaged 133/84.
I already ate a lot of legumes and other plant based Whole Foods. Most meals had been very low sodium. Yet recently within the
I recently watched video about adding about 2000 plus mg of potassium to your diet.
In the UK, Which Magazine tests blood pressure monitors and price is not a reliable indicator of quality.
I love all of his presentations
What to do to stop hair loss..
Absolutely love the Mcdougall family! Good information
It’s the food. It is also excessive stress which can raise insulin resistance /diabetes and high blood pressure.
Nice show!
Hi my question is:
I have been in HBP medication for the last 9 year. I use Ibertasan H 150. I am safe to refrain from it?
Thank you. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️
Hi Chef AJ. Thanks for your many videos. I went on his website, the book doesn't seem free.
Nice monstera plant. A lot of the nonstick pans are completely toxic. Can you recommend one that isn’t? Thank you.
I used pampered chef cookware
That’s so true. Occupational choices for women were very limited in the 1970s. Things opened up in the 1980s.
How do you spell the medication Dr. MsDougal mentioned that is safer to use that can be purchased at Walmart?
I never had any issue with BP until I started chemo for breast tumor. The surgery then caused horrid pain, followed by 35 rounds of radio therapy. The treatment for cancer caused the BP. How can I deal with that. I hate the way the BP med make me feel, so many bad side effects.
Do parasite cleanse.wormwood black walnut is great cleanse ,watch the cancer decrease.
Breast cancer is often caused by dairy. If you are still eating dairy stop all dairy as well as all other animal based foods. Cut salt and oil and eat a low fat whole food plantbased diet. Exercise and drink hibiscus tea every day.
3.5 hours? Is there a condensed version? He is the most generous doctor with his time. My pcp gives me 20 min :)
And they are on about cutting that down
Good video, they take the bo right about 25% of the time. They are even taken the lower arm.
Dont understand what that meanns
How can I put on weight. Been getting various test and they can't find the cause of my weight loss. I have fibroids and one is now 5cm large.
I detox, take supplements and build up drinks. I even tried eating lots of bananas. Am in my mid 60s.
I do all of that just to look like someone who is eating. The number on the scale goes up and down a bit but nothing on my body shows for it. Sometimes am contemplating stop eating for a while kind of fasting.
how do i deal with my menopause
how do deal with intermittent fasting and belly fat
what is the side effects of chlorthalidone and how do you deal with them
Hi Dr. McDougall ,wonderful insights into blodd pressure. May I ask, I have chronic kidney disease and am on plantbase diet , but my bp is still rather high about 150-160, should i ask for chlortalidone, as I read it is contraindicated for weak kidneys in info on drug uses.
Please watch your spinach if you are taking it with kidney problems. Too much potassium not good for kidney issues!!
Did you cut all oil and salt from your diet? Exercising regularly?
