    For Isaac’s third Disney Music Breakdown, he explains the significance and inner workings of every moment in the song “Reflection” from Mulan.
    MOVIE LINKS:
    Mulan/Mulan II: amzn.to/2wH9EQm
    Living in ancient China within a wealthy and noble family, Fa Mulan is required to bring honor to her family by marrying a man of status and virtue, but Mulan does not feel prepared to take on this life. Although she attempts to cheat and fake her way to earn the respect of the match maker, her plans go horribly, and when I say horribly I mean horribly wrong, leaving Mulan feeling defeated and unsure of who she really was. In this moment, she felt there was a discrepancy between who she was and what was expected of her, expressing her thoughts in the song Reflection.

    I think that loose strand that she keeps swiping off her face represents that she wants to be apart from everyone else who are all cultured and disciplined and... the same. She stands out, and she wants to be herself, but it's hard whenever her parents want her to honor the family. So she pushes it aside (and so does her parents sometimes, if you noticed...) but it always finds a way to stray in the end.

  • @jessicaball7426

    That's very interesting. She just needs to be herself not someone she's not. But, she's a good war hero.

    This is the first time ever I watched your video and cried ❤️❤️❤️❤️
    It hits me hard as my family still pretty much raised me up as an typical Asian girl and lots of expectations are very high (although it is not getting married and became a submissive wife) but still... it still is like Mulan’s family in the way i.e. studying in certain fields, achieved certain gpa, get certain careers
    And still lots of people in their cycle (friends and family) expecting to see me getting married!
    Reflection and Part of that World always are my life’s background soundtrack.

    • @ghidorahs1fan209
      @ghidorahs1fan209 5 лет назад +5

      I'm not Asian but I'm from a well off gypsy family who are very religious and was expected to be a good wife get married to a man my family have approved of as soon as I was 18 and just be a house wife and mother. I ran away at 16 and have my own life as I was not like my cousins who are much older than me are very religious and were happy to have that life but I was different I didn't believe in God I am a goth I liked things I wasn't ment to like and wanted to just be me and have fun and have a story to tell once I was older. Besides a life were my school years were my years of freedom.
      So this song makes me cry every time I hear it as it was very close to my life.

    • @IsaacCarlson
      @IsaacCarlson  5 лет назад +9

      Wow! I'm so glad I could do the song justice, Eva! That makes sense. The expectations have evolved, but the pressure is still present. Oh man. I don't think you should get married until you are ready and are with the right person. That is too much if you aren't ready. "Part of Your World" is one of my favorites by far. Thanks for watching!

    When Mulan came out I was in the same place in my life she was and reflections meant a lot to me I felt more myself when I was in my make up my persona then when I was wearing no make up I painted my face to match my inside and people did not except me for who I am then years later I Had a rebellion point and became popular almost like a leader of two groups but i also did things at that time because i hated myself and my husband brought me out of my depression to a better self a true self reflections still means a lot to me and will always mean a lot to me for it was one of the things that got me through a time in my life i felt cut off from myself

    On top of everything you brought up, honour and traditions in Asian cultures are super important to follow. So that’s another thing for Mulan to stress over. She’s about 16 which is around the age where you start to question who you are and what you want for yourself. That alone is a lot for that age

    I'll never forget the scene where Mulan meets the matchmaker. Matchmaker:To please your future in-laws, you must demonstrate a sense of dignity and refinement. You must also be poised..." Mulan:(notices cricket in matchmaker's teacup)"umm" Matchmaker:(gets in Mulan's face)"and silent!" That always cracks me up. I don't know if you have much to say about it, but I really liked your breakdown of "Be Prepared" and I was wondering if you could do one on "I Just Can't Wait To Be King".

    Aaaaahh! I love this series! What I really love about this song is as a teenager currently going through high school (and midterms) I relate to this song in terms of wanting to do the best I can to please my parents, because as every kid knows, you parents want you to do well and that pressure is what can make high school life stressful. I love this song also because of how although Mulan is such a beautiful person inside and out she is still not happy with herself. She says in the song that she’s not happy with her physical appearance but she’s really implying how she’s just not happy with her (recent) actions which is something I relate to and I’m sure many others do.
    Again I love this series, I can’t wait to see more ✨

    I loved the song because it applies to many people today too. Trying to reconcile who you are inside & what you want to be vs family &/or society expectations.
    I still wish they had taken the time to be more accurate with the history, but that's Disney. An exciting fairy tale with a moral lesson in it beats historical truth with complex moral lessons.

    I remember going to the theater with my cousins at the tender age of five to see this movie for the first time. I remember singing along with my cousins long after the movie had ended. I would like to think seeing just a glimpse how a woman empowered could change the world for the better, albeit fictional, at such a tender age affected how I would perceive strength as a grown woman. This movie is tied with Pocahontas in being my favorite movie. The only reason why it’s not full blown number one is because we did the Ancestry thing and discovered that we are related to Pocahontas and the Powhatan tribe.

    I love this song, although I like the extended version better.
    I really like this interpretation. I like that you acknowledged that Mulan knew who she was already and had her own dreams, but they were at odds with what her family wanted and what even seemed possible in the society she lived in. I always imagined her feeling stuck, wondering if it was evil of her to be thinking so independently since she is a selfless person and has been taught the ways of her society all her life. A lot of people say Mulan was finding herself, and that wasn't the case. She just feels like she failed her last hope of being "successful" as it was defined by her parents and society (kind of like if you drop out of college or take a degree plan headed for a lower salary; you might feel like there's no way to become successful now and you failed at your career attempt, even though that's not necessarily true. I think this kind of modern life where you can go to college and stuff would've suited Mulan better, but even then, she might have wanted to be something that her parents didn't support.) I think she even felt they were more ashamed of her than they actually were. I also liked how you mentioned how she questioned the way things were, because they just felt wrong.
    The only thing is, I don't think Mulan is wealthy. I think her father was just granted some land, by the emperor, for his heroic acts. I think they wanted her to marry into a wealthy family, though.

Then she sees the same girls who were also at the match maker's but they don't see Mulan or Khan Mulan and Khan then keep going and when Khan goes into the water, Mulan takes off her sashes. then Khan stops and is standing in the water. Mulan looks into the water and then begeins to cry. She has a small tear coming down her face. But instead of her sing "Somehoe I cannot hide who I am though I tried". , she sings "Who is that perfect bride? Its not me though I tried". Instead. Check it out.

    The thing that doesn't make sense with Mulan is her family. In ancient China, men of Fa Zu stature would have multiple wives. He is a wealthy man and well respected, for him to have only one wife as shown in the movie, would tell everyone that he is poor and is a peasant, which we know isn't. Mulan would not be the only child in her family, and no doubt at least one of Fa Zu's wives would have bore him a son. This is how society was back then. But when it comes to historic accuracy Disney get's a huge F. All of these characters come from completely different time periods, and they would never have met in real life.

    • @kkcake5771

      You're right about the multiple wives

    • @robinfa1477
      @robinfa1477 5 лет назад +2

      I try to fix it up in my fanfiction. I don't think they're actually wealthy. I think Fa Zhou was just granted some land and the right to leave his army duty for some heroic act. Fa Li might also have had some children before or after Mulan that died.
      I also like to imagine it's the Sui Dynasty and that the Huns are the Hephthalites.

    • @abbey-marieslatter9021
      @abbey-marieslatter9021 5 лет назад +1

      @@robinfa1477 I actually know a lot about Chinese history. So, if you really wanted to be technical that his land along with everyone else's and all of his property which includes Mulan and her mother is owned by the Emperor. The way this property is, is not one of a farmer, because if he was given land for his service, it probably be just that. Also look at the property itself, and the clothing compared to the others. They have money. Another suggestion that leads to them being wealthy, look at the scene when Mulan is getting ready to see the matchmaker. All of that work and all of there services wasn't free of charge. They were paid. If you were a farmer then you would only have enough money to pay taxes and any food that was on the table would have been grown by them. So them paying someone to dress her up to put Mulan on display for the matchmaker, calls out wealth. Even if they were poor they would have had to save for their entire lives just to see the matchmaker and everything to get prepared for it would have been solely done by the women of the household. But that wasn't the case with Mulan. The Fa family may have started out as farmers, but they weren't that, when it reaches Mulan. Also another thing, yes you cannot see much of the surrounding neighbors or families, but to what I have seen none of them or no where for that matter with the exception of the Emperor was anyone had multiple wives. And in any given society you would have the poor, the working class and the rich. That wasn't seen in either films. Lets say that the Fa family was upper middle class, he still would have had more than one wife. Only if he was dirt poor with nothing to his name would he have one wife. Which is clearly not the case.

    • @robinfa1477
      @robinfa1477 5 лет назад

      @@abbey-marieslatter9021 Like the equal-fields system? Wouldn't they be able to claim/borrow more land if they had more animals? They do have animals and in various media (Mulan 2, books, comics, not sure if you take that as canon) they do have some fields (for example, Mulan is seen plowing in one, and trading vegetables. I guess most farmed somewhat, but with their animals it seems regular.). It's also weird that there are no relatives around, so the Fa family might really be in decline, putting more pressure on Mulan. I don't know if animals/items from past relatives went back to the emperor the way land did, but if this is the case this may be some source of their goods. It's random for a wealthy family to live in the country unless they're some kind of magistrate or something.

    • @abbey-marieslatter9021
      @abbey-marieslatter9021 5 лет назад

      @@robinfa1477 The word you are looking for is Mandarin. You just restated and reworded what I said. The family is completely wrong. Their future is extremely important and their family must continue and their name must continue. That is why Fa being a man of that stature would have multiple wives. Back in those days you were supposed to have as many children as possible. And being a Mandarin isn't the only way a person could become wealthy. You could become wealthy through trade, or it could be inherited. Money marries money.
