How to test a VW Diesel TDI Fuel Shutoff Solenoid

While replacing seals on my High Pressure Diesel Fuel Injection Pump on my 1999 MKIV VW Jetta TDI (ALH Engine), I decided to test the shutoff solenoid to ensure proper operation.

How do i wire it on.the vehicle. If the threaded supply is negative. The body is grounded on the injection pump. Will it not short?
